We spent this weekend with our friends at Peterborough, and went to the annual Steamin' Blues event at the Nene Valley Railway at Wansford - you can go there direct but, for atmosphere, the best way is to jump on the special steam train at Peterborough (complete with bar); it takes you back at the end (together with a couple of hundred other people who had had rather more than yours truly could ever manage, all singing, for no apparent reason, Beatles songs).

Anyway, this years featured band was the British Blues Quintet, which comprises, at the moment, leader and bassist extraordinaire Colin Hodgkinson, guitarist Frank Diez (who was deputising for regular Miller Anderson, who's more frequently seen with the Spencer Davis Group), on drums Colin Allen, and then the two star names Zoot Money (keyboards) and the truly feisty Maggie Bell.

Colin and Frank twiddled about a bit for the blues purists to begin with (including a thunderous solo San Francisco Bay Blues on bass) - I couldn't really tell what they were singing, apart from "Woke up this morning..."

Then the rest of the band came on and they were sharp, loud and crystal clear, playing an excellent set of white man's rhythm & blues, most of their album, in fact, http://www.angelair.co.uk/sjpcd203.htm plus Maggie's No Mean City from Taggart.

Colin and Frank tradin' licks

Zoot Money, concentrating

Maggie Bell in one of her quieter moments
