Liza Tarbuck & Musican and broadcaster Huey Morgan are in for Jonathan Ross show from 1st August whilst he takes his summer break for the next few weeks. Does this mean 4 weeks? I understand some people would have liked Danny Baker instead. |

Oh dear. I have a feeling these 2 could be really awful stand-ins, almost as bad as Tate and the Dr Who fella.
I think that Jimmy Carr should be given a shot at standing in for Ross. Not sure who should be with him though. _________________

Why not Mark Lamarr? Has he blotted his copybook with the BBC? _________________ MiS |

It makes you wonder. I think Mark Lamarr was the best stand in. At least I can listen to the show when he does it. I certainly couldn't when Danny Baker did it. I'll listen to Liza as she's been ok with all the shows she's done so far. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

I don't understand why Mark Lamarr isn't being used. Maybe he just doesn't want to do it. He dropped out of most of his TV work for that reason.
After SOTS, Saturday is a complete washout now (and even SOTS is losing its appeal for me due to inferior production). Wakeman and Jeevesy are so much better over on Planet Rock - and the music is superb, too. Yesterday, up popped "Lucky Man" from ELP's first album. Wonderful - especially since it was on peak-time national radio. Such a rarity in such times of blandness on the airwaves. _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |

I've never been 'into' ELP, Genesis, Yes and the like. I remember John Peel following Alan Freeman's programme and saying 'Thanks Alan, for that three hours of prog rock, now let's have some music!' |

John Peel hated prog, for sure, and as a dedicated Peel listener I can see his reasoning. However, for about 2 years in the early 70s the pioneer prog bands like ELP, Genesis, King Crimson, etc., used to stage some really excellent shows and I loved them. They all reached a level of absurdity very quickly, of course, and punk quite rightly killed it stone dead in 1976, but for a short time it was really imaginative. I'd exclude Genesis from that, though, because they managed to adapt and survive, and their gigs have always been superb.
The debut albums from ELP (named simply after the band) and that of Yes ("The Yes Album") are, in my mind, classics and I love hearing them. They were all superb musicians, too, which helps.
I listen to Rick Wakeman on Planet Rock largely because his credibility as a presenter comes from having been a superb musician for decades - and his show is many times better than the rubbish we have to put up with from Mr. Smug (Woss) on R2.
Still, I get the feeling that Wossy's career is now on the wane due to the fact that he's shown himself up to being a bit of an idiot on more than one occasion. _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |

I wouldn't say Liza Tarbuck was that overwhelming. I understand she's the part of Radio 2 standin lineup, but the last time was a total washout for me. Has anyone seen LB on TV recently, or has that all dried up? |

Hi Colby. Just looking at my TV guide and next Friday 31st July, on BBC4 at 10pm there is 'Prog Rock' at the BBC followed by Bob Harris and John Peel 'discussing the much maligned music.' Both are repeats so you may have seen them before. I haven't so I'll be interested in the Harris/Peel prog-rock-ramme.
By the way as an LFC fan, as was John Peel, I wrote to him a few times and John sent me a photo of himself shaking hands with Elvis Presley. Elvis was turning away as if to say 'who is this guy?' John had class!
I've lost some regard for Steven Gerrard (pure poetry) as the 'incident' was about him wanting to hear a PHIL COLLINS song! |

Yes, I think I have seen them before - I might have dumped them to DVD actually - but thanks for the heads-up.

John Peel was a fabulous bloke. When I was a student (I think the year was about 1975) we got him to MC our annual summer rag ball. During the event I asked him if he could play a particular record for one of our dopey lecturers who was present. Peely never played it and I was really disappointed because it would have been a major laugh.
Then, on his 10.00pm show on Monday he read out my request and played the record. Not only that, but we'd been chatting about the music of John Martyn which he'd remembered - and played a couple of JOhn Martyn tracks on air. I did OK for drinks in the student bar on Tuesday.
What I liked about JP is that he always took the trouble to type replies to his correspondents - often by sitting in the BBC typing pool among all the female typists!
Great guy - much missed.
He liked Captain Beefheart, too! _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |

I never met John Peel, but he did drive an old car of mine - a 59 Edsel!
He and it can be seen in Classic American magazine, issue number 1.. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Yes, the Edsel is legendary - for all the wrong reasons. I like it, though. Didn't the Edsel come with the option of a 45rpm disc player in the dash? I love such mod cons!

Hmmm.... this thread seems to have drifted off-topic. An indication of our collective interest in Liza Tarbuck & Huey Morgan, perhaps? |

Very nice GG.. don't know much about bikes but I'm guessing they are all HDs? I thought the red one was an Indian at first...
Love the truck and it's original look. There was a tempting early 60s Ford Ranger on the UK Ebay a few weeks back in a similar condition - red/white and very honest.
I'm presently considering a very nice 51 Cadillac convertible... not sure yet though..
I'd like to hear Mark Lamarr back covering for Ross too..[/list] _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Heard bits and pieces and enjoyed the music I heard. Will check out the rest of the playlist.
I remember Liza played a rather ecclectic mix, which I enjoyed, when she was for J Ross at the beginning of the year.

Nope. I'm out of the habit of listening to anything on R2 after SOTS now. Anyhow, Rick Wakeman and Jeeves over on Planet Rock are infinitely more entertaining! _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |

Have to say - this was much better than I expected. The chat bounced along nicely and the music was excellent and varied. A charming background show. Nick. |

As Linda Smith said of Tin Henman "The human form of beige" Tarbuck is the audio form of a hot milky drink and wyncyette pajamas.

Huey Morgan was the frontman for Fun Lovin' Criminals - and he does a show on 6Music. I thought he complemented Liza better than any of her other Radio 2 partners - (and I include Radcliffe in there because I always felt she brought him down a bit). |

I've never been a particular fan of Lisa tarbuck on radio (her over articulated delivery gets on my nerves), but I've got to say that I think this pairing really works. I enjoyed last week's show, and this week's is just as good. Both presenters have a great rapport, and the level of discussion is pretty interesting too. Might try to catch this Huey Morgan on Radio 6 tomorrow. _________________ Minx

I have to admit I don't listen after 10.00am Saturday any more. I'd be tempted to listen to the stand-in pair were it not for the far superior alternative over on Planet Rock! _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |

To be fair Rick Wakeman is streets ahead of whowever appears on radio 2 at that time, I can understand the reluctance to change channels. |

Because Radio 2 exists within a broader context - and if we're interested in the future role to be played by the channel we have to take into consideration those other stations that compete for its audience.
When I refer to the superior alternative to Radio 2 at 10.00am Saturday (and Sunday, for that matter) on Planet Rock I do so to highlight the inadequacy of the station at that time.
Talking of which, I tend to listen to Radio 4 at 5.00pm weekdays, for reasons I don't need to expand upon. _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |

Heard the show today as I had to go into work.
Really enjoyed it, Huey Morgan was really knowledgable about music and seems to love a really wide range of music |

Don't dislike Lisa Tarbuck at all but, even so, I followed my usual practice and switched to Classic FM straight after SOTS today.
