MA returns to Radio 2 shortly in a broadcasting role.
Lets hope his appearance is a once off.

What's wrong with that? Experienced and established broadcaster returns instead of "celebrity nonentities", surely that's what we've all been asking for?
I was not a regular listener BTW but many were. |

Michael Aspel is actually a very good (and experienced) radio presenter Mark? I used to listen to him on Capital each weekday morning in the late 70s and early 80s?
So I don't understand the reasoning for your post?

More realistically, cover for Michael Ball?

I too remember him in his Capital radio days. He also did a re-enactment of Family Favourites a few years ago for Radio 2's aniversary. What's he going to do this time?

Excellent - Michael was always a good presenter. I have fond memories of his Capital show too. He will certainly show some of the Radio 2 "popular"  DJ's how it's done!

He used to do a Saturday morning show on Radio 2 in the 80's, probably following on from SOTS.
I actually met him a very long time ago when I was with my Dad having dinner in London. We all came down in the lift and he was really pleasant.

| He's in for Michael Ball on Sunday 13th September. Mark M, I agree what is wrong with Michael Aspel. He's a legend radio broadcaster and we need people like this instead of to many comedians presenting shows. |

Yes, you're right - he is a really nice bloke. I met him once, many years ago, in the Thames TV canteen at the old Teddington Studios (sadly no more, and occupied by Haymarket Press among others). He was at the next table and I was with a cameraman who had worked with him regularly; we got into conversation about food and he talked about the role of chef Michael Buerk (alias "Mike Barry") in his Capital Radio morning show. Buerk went on to feature in BBC TV's "Food & Drink" show with Chris Kelly at the helm, of course.
The more I think about the more I think he's ideal for Radio 2. He knows a lot about music, too!

| He's presented a few documentaries for the station. I guess Mark M things he's another celebrity. Maybe he is, but not like some of the staff Radio 2 employ at present. I would take Paul O'Grady out of that as he knows his music. |

Michael Aspel was on radio in the 50s/60s when I was a child and was also a newsreader on BBC (they only had one channel then) so I don't think you'll get anyone who has more experience than he has.

One of the things I remember about Michael Aspel was that he was never slow to take the mickey out of himself. One of the first presenters to drop the stuffy stuff and adopt a slightly self deprecating style. He can come on Radio 2 any time soon for me.

I also remember him fronting LWT's The Six O'Clock Show (late 70s, early 80s) with sidekicks Janet Street-Porter and Danny Baker. They ribbed him mercilessly but he seemed to thrive on it.

This is not the direction Radio 2 needs to be going in.
Bring in a much younger presenter as the cover-more in tune with what's going on.
Why not bring in someone like Graham Dene by way of example. |

| Who gives a toss about his age (apart from you) he is a good presenter and that's all that matters. There are enough 'younger' presenters trying to be 'cool' on radio 2 as it is, why have another one. |

I know what your saying. Radio 2 broadcasters are in tune with what the listeners want. A lot of the shows are made up for the direction what Radio 2 are heading towards. There are far to many celebrities on the station who no nothing about music which is letting the listeners down. This is why specialist shows and broadcasters who know music are in between the schedules for example Alan Carr show for those to tune back too. |

Michael Aspel will be 77 in January. Most of Radio 2's listeners in that slot were more than happy with septagenerian Michael Parkinson.
I'm sure that he's fully "in tune" with current affairs (the Sunday newspapers) and the world of entertainment, and also pretty sure that it's just a one (or two) off; he's not interested in a long term commitment, but still has a wish to inform and entertain. We shall at least be able to understand everything he says because he speaks very clearly.
Graham Dene is OK but anonymous; that's why he's now on Smooth, rather than Radio 2.

Graham Dene must be well over 60; I remember him on Capital in the mid 70's.

What a load of tosh! Do you work for the BBC Mark? This is precisely the ludicrous "policy" that has robbed us of some terrific broadcasters (Moira Stuart being a prime example). Aspel is a personable, knowledgeable and experienced Radio man who can only bring good things to Radio 2. I've only got to hear Alan Carr's voice and I turn off immediately - Aspel can show the likes of that twit how it should be done!

So, what is going on exactly? There are now more people aged over 60 than there are teenagers; the so-called "grey pound" has more spending power, and "70 is the new 50" as Johnnie Walker said yesterday (although partly in jest).
In other words, the radio-listening demographic (to use an expression favoured by media folk and statisticians alike) is shifting fast towards the middle-aged listener and viewer.......
.... yet the mainstream media providers still insist on trying to capture the young audiences without regard for the fact that the younger audiences are doing other things with their time.
I'm sorry that the regulator, the increasingly "soft" and toothless OfCom, allows this shift to happen - though it's no surprise and has been happening since Thatcher's disastrous Broadcasting Act of 1990 - because it all flies in the face of common sense. Still, they always seem to know what we want better than we do (and it would seem that the current R2 Controller doesn't have the first clue about what "we" want any more than his predecessor did).
So, with that in mind, I think Aspel would be a very fitting addition to the R2 line-up simply because many listeners would actually welcome his presence on air. If the younger listeners don't approve then tough; they can listen to, or do, something else when he would be on.
