I hope we will not lose him, he is not on enough as it is. I'm sure they won't have him sitting in for the hideous one, they wouldn't allow it on Drivetime!
How much lower can our beloved R2 go? Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

I can't see Johnnie doing Evan's holiday fill in either. Why should he given that he was responsible for having him removed from Drivetime? It's bad enough for him to have to play the idiot's trails during his show!

Doesn't look good. Just as well I've a lot of recordings! The radio will hardly be used in our house next year.

Actually, lower than that, it could be Cilla Black. That lovely sing-song voice and that wonderful self introduction that reminds me of a doctor discovering some nasty little infection:

A couple of years ago I had the pleasure of meeting Johnnie and he is a real gentleman. He said that if he was in charge of Radio 2 he would be doing Drivetime again and he said it with some emotion and perhaps a bit of anger that had built up in side of him. I asked him what the future holds and he said that indeed 2 hours a week was not enough for him. If they are going to change things around at weekends bring back his brilliant pirate slot introduced earlier this year for a limited run. The bloke is a legend and Radio 2 is a different place when he is around, a better place. He is streets ahead of any other DJ not just on radio 2 but any radio station. The likes of Evans, O'Leary, Ball, Ross, Mayo etc etc will never ever posess the skills this man has. I have already contacted the BBC to make my thoughts and feelings clear and I hope other people who use this board will do the same

I can only echo these sentiments and I'm going to write to the Beeb. I don't expect it will make any difference, it didn't when JW lost Drivetime.

Yes, I've met Johnnie as well and he is exactly how you imagine him to be. His manner off-mic is the same as the JW you hear on the radio. I told him that I missed him not doing Drivetime and he said that he most definitely missed doing it himself. I could see that he meant it.

I think it's terrible the way really good talents are used and abused by controllers (many of whom couldn't run a studio mixer desk and engage with an audience if their lives depended on it), but - alas - a sign of the times.

Banality rules - as exemplified by Evans' appointment to Drivetime and now Breakfast.

The BBC don't give a fig for what we, the licence payers, think. That has been obvious for years. If they did, why would they pay lavish salaries (OUR money Twisted Evil ) to idiots like Ross, Evans, Carr etc?

Radio should be about the likes of Ken and Johnnie: REAL broadcasters who know their stuff and have a loyal following.

I remember when I met him at Pirate Essex and I said to him Ive driven 250 miles to come and see this, he looked and smiled and said what a waste of petrol! We both laughed. As you say he is exactly the same on and off the radio. His wife is a lovely lady also.

It's not a joke, they've 'been there, done that'. Remember when she covered for Ken Bruce a couple of years ago.

I can see Radcliffe or Maconie being given a chance at deputising - except for the fact that their 'odd-job' roles have been toned down a bit this year (perhaps to keep them together more often in the evening?)

So what next for the legend? Is he going to still cover for Breakfast in the new year when Wogan retires or will he instead cover for Ken Bruce or perhaps another daytime jock? I hope that we are getting to get a bit more than just 2 hours a week on a Sunday.

He's back for Terry on the 19th October. Did I read that he's filling in once Wogan goes on the 18th December until Evans takes over? Maybe the last swan song for his cover. I can't see Evans will take Holiday in a period of the rajars being counted,so I guessing he will be on until at least March before any break.

He is doing breakfast between Terry and Evans, so it will rightly be able to be called the Johnnie Walker Breakfast Show!

Well he didn't quite manage that on Drivetime but it's easily possible that more Togs would warm to JW over CE on Breakfast but it's unlikely that JW would attract any new listeners where as CE will. For sure some people will move away from R2 in the short term but when it comes to great breakfast shows; build it, and they will come.

I know Evans is well established at the station already. I think Breakfast with Evans will take about 6 to 12 Months to blend in. I guess the next Rajars in 2010 will give some indication how he's doing. I think he will do well. People thought he was going to be a flop on Drivetime and proved everyone wrong.

Just a thought... Give him a chance. Very Happy

He may not have been a flop on Drivetime but I wouldnt say he has been a success, I dont believe he has increased the ratings and I would imagine he commands a decent salary. Is he worth it? Not in my opinion.

'Quite' being the operative word. Walker regularly attracted around 5 million listeners. Evans now attracts around 5.3 million. Impressive, but nonetheless helped by plenty of marketing that JW never really got. I'm not looking at this all nostagically - do you remember JW getting regular TV plugs?

And here's one from the past -
http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2005/may/06/commercialradio.rajarradioaudiencefigures

JW on 5.2 million listeners. So JW was attracting new listeners back then. He certainly proved that you can also build a great drivetime show and people will come. It's funny how some people on here forget so quickly now that Evans has come in jumping and screaming around.

Besides, Rachel, we know it's not all about ratings. I hope the bosses realise this, too.

I don't disagree with you. I think JW is fab - love him to bits. I've said in another thread, moving Chris to Breakfast is not what I thought he would have wanted but there it is, it's done and we run with it. Everything in life is only temporary and all great victories turn into defeat if you wait long enough, so it's important to enjoy the things you like while they are there.

Indeed, there was a time not so long ago when "endless trailers" just did not happen - as Wogan would say "Halycon days" Laughing

It's got to the stage where even the News contains trailers for "upcoming" BBC progs Rolling Eyes

That's true, but then there are trailers for pretty much all the shows at the moment , not just Chris Evans. It's not all about Chris Evans, it's only in places like this where he gets mentioned all the time. If I'm not mistaken there was a trailer for JW when he was sitting in on Breakfast a while ago and Wogan has "endless trailers" too. So if we're moaning about trailers in general- yep we don't really need em, but if we're moaning about only the CE trailers then that's just being picky.

I have never heard a trailer for JW doing breakfast but im not saying that there was one. I got tired of Radio 2 trailers recently as they seemed to be more and more of them almost every 10mins it seems and they were all Evans, Wogan, Wright or Radcliffe/maconie. Radio 2 guess what we know these shows exist!! It wasnt just the frequency but theres only so much cheering and clapping my big show is best you can take from Wright and screaming from Evans with his childish stuff like trying to play a recorder. Sorry but I know im not alone when I say I turn of the radio for 30 seconds when they come on. Its the more unusual shows where the odd trailer now and again wouldnt do any harm.

Those would be the halcyon days when everyone bought a Radio Times and didn't need a magnifying glass to find, let alone read, the radio listings.

Just about every programme gets a trailer, there are some for television as well, and although, like the playlist, some get aired more frequently than others, the two or three 30-second inserts an hour is hardly excessive.

Just thank your lucky stars it's not "We buy any car dot com" every ten minutes. Rolling Eyes

Not wishing to do down Johnnie, but doesn't that report cover the period either during or just after Stuart Maconie's lengthy stint while Johnnie was ill? That's got to be a contributing factor.

Rachel, I'm "moaning" about ALL trailers, not just the Evans ones. Their ubiquity has become a real pain in the neck, and I disagree with Ron that they are "hardly excessive" - they are!

Well I'm not a fan of "trailers" especially when the trailer is for a show that has just finished or is just about to start; and that happens a lot. Tell me something I don't know already. Sometimes a trailer is useful for a special programme or a programme tucked away in the schedule but we rarely hear those. If it is to be that we are to have trailers, then they should be jolly good trailers.
