Totally agree. 
Normal Radio 2 service will be back to normal very soon, and there will be much less texting / e-mailing and endless readout trivia to be heard |

Terry reads emails and so do most of the other normal presenters. Except Sarah doesn't really do this as she's slighty old fashioned. |

Yes but they are amusing, as opposed to the absolute drivel produced from the presenter simply thinking up some stupid topic and asking the listeners to respond eg 'what's in the back of your van' etc that has filled in many programmes over Xmas / New Year. Even Aled was at it this morning with 'Big Brother' and some other trivia I have forgotten, and I only heard the last 10 mins. |

At least it gets the listeners involved and thats what it's all about. In the old days the listeners used to write in. |

I don't need listeners involved, especially if it's just drivel telling me of their anecdotes, where they are or what they are doing as a mainstay to the show, I need informed presenters providing good entertainment.
Just because you think it's modern doen't mean it's good. |

The problem that has been seen here as well in other forum pages, and back in the days of the R2 Message Boards, is that some people just don't see what Terry is really doing.
His anecdotal output which incorporates both his own views, and those of his contributing listeners, is the best "send up" of Life, with all of its' idiosyncracies, absurdbities, flaws, downright stupidities and so on, but sometimes balanced by the finer, and happier times in our lives.
Terry doesn't take himself seriously; his self depracating humour is his trademark, and is a mark of the man, compared to some of his peers on the Beeb and elsewhere who seem to hold the opinion that by tuning in to them, we are doing them a favour!!
Terry's show, with all of its' banter, humour, and often good music, is a gentle way to ease yourself into the day. If he wasn't successful, why has he lasted all these years!
Long may he continue! |

Exactly - the listeners (his regular crowd especially) feed off his 'is it me' views with their own input each day; the reactions to news stories (or Fran's slight slip-up re 'more better' this morning for instance) are often hilarious and in the case of the long-running sagas re John Marsh and his shed, positively inventive! In fact, some of the regulars almost get to become 'old friends' too; you know what's coming when he announces having received correspondence from 'Horatio Q Birdbath' or 'Chuffer Dandridge' ("He's Behind You!" - this morning's was absurd but priceless!).
As Scots Iain says, just the thing you need to get going in the morning.... when he finally hangs up his microphone and headphones for the last time on R2, it will be a sad day for the network.

Don't mis-understand me, I think Terry's show is excellent and strikes the correct balance of listener input and Terrys wit.
I am getting at the format that seems to be taking over R2, especially when we have standins filling in. It consists of the presenter simply playing a record or 2 and then thinking up some stupid topic to get the listeners to text / e-mail in and then spends the rest of the show simply reading out the responses. You will hear it from RA, MG, AL, LP and several others, and to me it is boring. For example a few weeks ago we had MG standing in for SK and the topic was 'what's in the back of your van', I despair.
I enjoy Aled Jones but this morning I heard the last 10mins and he was doing exactly the same with Big Brother and some other topic.
It can be a fine balance of listener input, KB uses it well but only for his competitions, CE uses but it is usually controlled for Fridays incl his request show and can be entertaining. Just listen to TW, KB, BH, JW etc etc and hear they don't need this awful drivel texting format, they can entertain without it. |

I agree with you , in part, Nod. Terry is a living legend and anything he does is ok by me.
Also the comments Re: texting-in... it is over-used by some presenters. I would disagree with those having AL and RA amongst them though. The night-time shows (AL), don't have travel news, which fills huge slices of the day-time shows, so it may only seem like AL uses more listener input during his show but on a minute for minute to available time comparison, it's actually less. Listen again to Alex sitting in for Ken today ( which was fantastic BTW) and tot up the Travel News time. ... I could say I've encountered no traffic problems, here at my desk.
I do remeber the what's in the back of your van text-in... ... I texted in with ... I don't have a van. |

I don't think it's going that way Mark. It works really well with some shows, as part of the overall package ( I'm thinking Drivetime and Best Time of the Day Show) but as a stand alone attraction, Texting, is as dull as it gets..... it's Big Brother - early on a Sunday Morning, Dull....
I don't know if it's an age thing but to me, texting is a difficult, time consuming method of sending a short muddled and quite often pointless message ...... I just don't have the thumbs for it. |

I would suggest predictive texting, but then how could any machine predict what you are thinking?

This had me in sticthes this morning when Terry read out the email about the guy whose missus is "culinary challenged" and who put traffic lights in the kitchen following on from the governments new "diet colour code idea"
Red- Give it to the dog
Amber - I'm so famished I might nibble at it

I liked the one about the Royal Mail managing to deliver the letter with just a map of the recipient written on the front - to which the following was received by TW - "can someone send a map to Tony Blair of Beachy Head with an arrow pointing downwards?!"
And there's some class stuff today (Friday) about Fran's "lack of sordid sexual activities".... 0820 and 0850 being absolute highlights!
