I think Mark Lamarr is a fine DJ-very knowledgeable/has a strong passion for music.

Why then, is he so underused by the BBC.

I could see him being a successor to Brian Matthew on SOTS when Mr Matthew decides to retire.

Yes indeed.

Whilst I hope that BM's retirement, however well deserved, will be delayed indefinitely, I can see that some succession planning is needed and ML should certainly be considered strongly.

Ian.

It wasn't that long ago that he had plenty of shows on the go. viz- One on reggae, 1950s obscurities, Alternative 60s, then his Friday-into saturday show. And he regularly filled in for Jonathan Ross.

As much as I like Mark, I wouldn't really like to see him take over from Brian should the day come... who knows, when BM hangs up his phones, the powers at Radio 2 may use the opportunity to disassociate itself from the 60s and it's fans... Sad well, it could happen..
A replacement for Brian would have to be somebody "of the time" for me.. obviously Johnnie Walker would be great!
Come to think of it.. who else is of "a certain age" on Radio 2 anyway? maybe Suzi??

I actually found him very good sitting in for Jonathan Ross when he was on his holidays. Then that all stopped for Liza Tarbuck.

Ed Stewart would make a good host of SOTS - he was there at the time and has the required knowledge.

Me too, I looked forward to JR's breaks so we could have Mark on daytime radio... I didn't mind Jo Brand with him either..
But not for SOTS..

That's the main criteria IMHO, actually having been there, and not just as a child or young teen. Johnnie Walker was great and the late Simon Dee as well. They have good stories to tell of the decade.

Yes he was, but won't have any musical memories worth broadcasting to the nation. Wink

This happened when, I think, Martin Freeman did the Motown Documantary on BBC4. He wasn't old enough to remember the era and so spoiled it completely.

MiS-The BBC employ many fine DJ's/presenters.

Richard Allinson is clearly my favourite but I appreciate the talents of other broadcasters such as Mark Lamarr, Bob Harris, Annie Nightingale, Johnnie Walker, Dermot O'Leary, Zoe Ball, Gambo, Gideon Coe, Shaun Keaveny amongst others.

Some of them you never used to have the time or day for. I'm glad you have changed your mind, and appericate other Radio 2 employees.

I "appericate" Sarah K, Terry W, Ken B, Johnny W, Stuart M.

What a marvellous word, has much more of a ring to it than dull old "appreciate" Laughing

Laughing Thank you for that, Rach - I'd agonised for half an hour to put what I felt, and gave up, but you've put it perfectly.

I just don't like his voice and attitude.

I don't deny his knowledge and passion for music, at least, the music he likes. Trouble is, he makes little secret of his dislike for 99% of what gets aired in the mainstream, and for the artists or the people who do like it. I suspect he's put too many backs up at the Beeb to be used anywhere other than the little niche that he has.
