I was sad to learn of the death of Norman Painting, who played Phil in the Archers ever since 1950 and still has one or two final contributions waiting to be heard.

There is a R2 connection, as the Archers went out on the Light Programme in its early years.

NP is quite irreplaceable, of course, so I imagine they'll wait for a decent interval and then allow Phil to succumb to a heart attack or similar.

Ian.

Hi Ian,

I remember the Archers being on before 7 o'clock when I was a child. It was always 'packing up whatever I was doing time' at the end of the signature tune and time for bed back then!

I even remember some of the old characters, Walter Gabriel, Charles Grenville and of course Phil Archer.

Sad news.

As soon as I heard the accordion intro to The Archers, I switched off! I found it totally unlistenable! Shocked

Last time I tuned in, admittedly some time ago, use of the Yetties' accordion version was confined to the Sunday omnibus.
