A set-up was arranged with some of the pilots bringing their "Cold War" classic jets into RAF Leuchars, Fife, for the annual September Battle of Britain Airshow. The original plan was to have four Jet Provosts/Strikemasters in formation flying past a hill near Dunbar on their way into the show on the arrivals day, the Friday before the show.
Word got around some of the guys flying up, and four became six, and six soon became eight! Needless to say, however, co-ordination then proved to be something of a problem. One aircraft turned up too early, one was too late, and the formation of six got a bit ragged whilst flying around East Lothian prior to their first and second passes! At least I got some of them in - it proved far too difficult to get true low-level shots of them all passing me as they were far too close and too big a grouping!
If you live in the Dunbar, North Berwick or Haddington area and wondered what the hell was going on during the morning of 11/09/09, sorry, you know who to blame!
Definitely need to try this again next year - who needs to go to an airshow when the airshow comes to you? _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”
