Another 1" of snow this morning.

Then at the footie (Cov) it was so c-o-o-o-l-l-l-d-d-d-d I've caught a chill, feel crappy now. Mrs W's quiche has helped a bit but need anoter paracetemol. Sad

More snow tomorrow predicted. Confused

Ha ha, acatually I've been drinking Rockin Rudolph up oiur local!

Anyway, the thaw has started! All the snow has fallen off our shrubs, parts of the patio have cleared, the front drive too, and poor snowman at grand-daughter's some of his bits fell off! While repairing him I noticed he was getting a bit slushy round the edges!

Thaw set in today - positively tropical at midday, +5C on the car trip computer, even the ice warning light went out!

Only danger today was from the three-foot long icicles falling from the guttering. I should try and post some shots of them that I took yesterday!

Just to put a few things in perspective...

The first frost this winter did not occur until almost December, one month later than last winter. There was no reason to assume that we would experience a particularly long spell of frost and snow.

County councils and the Highways Agency have used more salt/grit in the last month than in the whole of last winter, when temperatures, in January at least, were just as low - the main difference was that it was relatively dry.

If they always assume that winters are going to be as hard as this one appears to be, then larger stockpiles of salt, grit and equipment would have to be maintained, at some considerable cost, to us.

We have the wrong kind of snow. Don't laugh! It's very wet, so it sticks to everything and is very slippery (Example - a very small amount of sleet fell and settled overnight here; this morning traffic was slewed across roads with the slightest of inclines, and buses were diverted off their normal routes to avoid getting tangled up in it. To the west of Nottm, on the M1 there was a huge jam as traffic slowed to a careful crawl). In places like North America, where it is much colder, snowfall is dry and powdery - yes, it does drift, but that means that it doesn't adhere, and roads are not as badly affected.

It is a popular perception that the UK is unique in experiencing chaos when it snows and that every other country copes far better. Read well inside the newspapers and you'll learn that France and Germany, at least, are suffering just as badly as we are.

And another thing:-
What do you think happens to all these hundreds of thousands of tons of salt and grit which is being spread on our roads? Where does it end up, or down? Think about the wear, tear and cost of cleaning out the drainage system as well.

So, after all the headlines about shortage and rationing of grit, on Friday, just as the rapid thaw set in and we went off for the weekend, our local council came round and dumped loads of the stuff all over the side roads and pavements (but none in the grit bins). Most of it is still lying there, like the loose dressing they put down as a cheap resurfacing job on minor roads in the summer, clogging up your tyres and wheelarches. Come the snow tomorrow night it will be useless. Rolling Eyes

I predict Snow falls every Wednesday in the winter months:lol:. The white stuff seems to have come every Wednesday since the beginning of 2010. Although the roads are so wet it's not laying thank-god in Sussex.

No more snow, but yesterday's is still hanging on. Our windows upstairs had ice inside them this again morning, we don't have double glazing - just secondary. My hubby refuses to change the windows!

I know what you mean, my Niece lives in Canada, it often snows there and has been somewhere between -15 and -25 for the last few weeks, no mention of this on the news over here.
I don't think Canada really mind about not appearing on our news bulletins though Laughing

They mentioned Canada on BBC Breakfast News this morning... apparently, they are having to bring in snow by the truck load due to a lack of it around the resorts as opposed to the upper east coast of the US where they have real snow problems.

Had snow in Newcastle this morning - it's not lying (on the ground!), well at least not by 4pm. The A1 was fine until just north of Morpeth then the conditions worsened, lying snow on the minor roads between Felton and Amble (interesting driving, plenty people looking as though they'd never seen the white stuff before). At the coast - nothing. Here in Hadston, we've just had snow falling on top of a layer of hailstones. Should liven things up tomorrow morning!

I have dealt with quite a fair number of personal injury claims over the years and recently I was talking with a member of a Local Authority legal section and she told me that many Councils now do not clear snow from pavements or grit them since apparently if they do nothing they can defend claims more easily than if they do something but are negligent and don't do the job properly

It all seems a bit back to front to me but I wouldn't like to disagree with her and that might be a factor in explaining the situation and it may not all be down to saving money though I suppose that's a bonus for them

Left home for work @ 0640 this morning - got into the office @ 0950. Three hours 10 minutes to travel ~27 miles.... Evil or Very Mad

None of the main roads had been gritted, the dual carriageway from Ashington to Newcastle ("the Spine Road") was one sheet of ice from one end to the other and I didn't see one single gritter vehicle during the whole trip.

The local papers and TV have recently ran reports from local councils saying "Yes, we're ready for this winter" - oh, really? Apparently County Durham was even worse.

Leaving the office @ 5pm - what chance I don't get home until 9?
