Why haven't they announced the replacement yet? Lynn's only got two weeks left right?

Oh you know what these big corporations are like Nick, they decided ages ago on who it would be but they haven’t yet had the “decision review meeting”, that’s when lots of people turn up with a cup of coffee and no preparation asking, while stuffing their faces with biscuits, so who was it again? Then there’ll be the decision pre release readiness review meeting, that’s when the same people turn up again with another cup of coffee and even less preparation - asking, so what’s the best the way to let everyone know what we’ve decided, … “well, we could just tell them” Tell them!? Are you mad? Don’t you know anything; you have to wait until it’s too late to change the decision before you let anyone know what it is. The last thing we’ll do is tell anyone.

It's not hobby radio either though is it? There has to be a point to it. If no one is listening - then there's no point broadcasting.

Anyway you need not worry- Alex Lester is almost sure to get the gig.

You're not Sarah K are you? Smile

Nah Richard M wouldn't want it- why would he- he's retired- he and Judy just want a quiet life- he's just having a bit of fun with this filling-in now and again thing.

Aled?... No way. He would be the death of Radio 2 in the mornings, if you want someone to sing at your wedding, yeah, call Aled, he's good at singing, if you want someone to host a radio show call Alex...

Richard mentioned this morning that it was a struggle to get up and keep awake driving in (Memo: give him a wide berth on the road) at that hour of the morning.

Aled's too busy. Alex might not want it. The one person who might want it won't get it (Richard)

There are plenty of redundant Smooth, Heart and Global presenters on the market Rolling Eyes

Aled is only temporary replacement until the new year. I would be surprised if Lynn would be able to continue to present at Radio 2 unless they ask her to leave Smooth. This is what has happened to Tony Blackburn. Smooth have really done themselves in with press releases saying "they are going to challenge Radio 2, and continue to have guys who freelance with the BBC. So this won't happen anymore. If Sarah had left before Simon Bates announcement ,I bet Lynn would have seen out her contract at Smooth ages ago.

I think we can be pretty certain that Alex would like it- he's been waiting for it for 20 years. Alex is very patient.

I don't think anybody's mentioned it before but is it possible Sarah Kennedy could end up on Smooth Radio?
I wouldn't know as I don't listen or take much notice of all these stations but surely that would put a shot across Radio 2's bow?

I would doubt it. I think she's made it clear she wants a rest from the hard slog of a permanent, regular gig. Their format of four-hour slots with presenters doing little more than filling in gaps between pre-programmed music and adverts would hardly appeal.

I'm sure she'll find something to do, if she wants/needs to.

Aled is only temporary until November, unless he's going to do it "on the road" from his hotel room in Llandudno, Dumfries, Liverpool, Eastbourne etc etc.

I just wanted to point out Lynn is currently on national smooth radio breakfast covering until Mr Bates takes over. Tony Blackburn was forced to leave the station if he was too work for Radio 2. I like Lynn on Radio 2, but can't see how this can happen for one person and not the other. Unless she's leaving at the end of December or she's not got a contract for Smooth, but how come Tony was able to work for Radio 2 before, and now he was forced to leave Smooth, and able to continue to do shows for KCFM. It just doesn't add up.

Mark

Tony Blackburn's previous shows on Radio 2 were specials and one offs. I would suspect he is allowed to do them under his contract with Smooth but not able to do regular scheduled show.

Perhaps it has something to do with the wording of individual contracts? One may be exclusive and another non-exclusive. Exclusive contracts are worth more money but limit the person's ability to do other stuff.

My understanding (based on Internet postings, no insider knowledge!) is that the BBC made dropping the Smooth programmes a condition of doing Pick of the Pops. Tony will be allowed to continue doing his other work, though. I suspect that Uncle Bob sees Smooth as direct competitors to Radio 2.

I have that feeling too. If Alex were going to get it- it would be a done deal by now. Lynn is quite good but not extending Alex is an act of open hostility against Alex, broadcasting and the common good.

Lynn is ok nothing special but perhaps R2 just want somebody stable and im sure that they would also prefer a female in a male dominated line up.The thing is alex is such a pro and very good at his job,he cue's the records and knows when to stop talking(are you listening mr wright?)

Blimey! LP. In the interests of balance and equality?! Male dominated lineup!? What!? If I were the “little woman” being offered the “little show” on that basis, oh there you go dear, you have this little show before all the men come on with their big important shows; Mr Shennan would find himself being launched horizontally from a 6th floor window, and that would be because I doubt very much there is an industrial sized mincer at Radio 2. I’d have him minced then made into lots of little portions of Executive Lasagne to be given away to the needy in a new charitable venture. The Radio 2, Feed the Homeless, at Christmas Scheme! Yeah- Bob Geldoff has nothing on me.
There’s more than enough women work at Radio 2 already – there’s no need to have any more purely to satisfy the interests of equality! Err.. Talent.

What this whole mess is about, is what we call in the Executive world, covering your own backside, Shennan, is concerned, and rightly so, that if he extended Alex, he will be charged with squeezing out Sarah Kennedy- cos that, is on the face of it, what he would have done. But it isn’t; regardless of what he does with the 05:00 to 06:30 slot, he actually squeezed out Janice Long- a long time ago, Janice’s show is now an hour shorter than it used to be, and the Breakfast Show is an hour longer. QED.

So what happened to the interests of equality with that decision? And by the way, if anyone says, oh but the Breakfast Show used to start at 06:30 years ago, so we’re just putting things back how they used to be, they’ll be next in the mincer!

What happened to common sense? Everyone, well almost everyone knows that the most practical, economic, entertaining, reliable, sensible desirable outcome from all of this, is for Janice to get her hour back and for Alex to gain 30 minutes.

I really hope Lynn gets it
After all she covered a very early slot for many weeks with virtually no notice when Sarah left and she did it very competently and professionally unlike some females on the network I could mention
She deserves her chance on Radio 2 and if she gets the gig it will probably be the one and only time when I can actually say
Well Done Bob!

The BBC can't expect to announce Lynn has got the job when she's working on a national radio station. It would look bad. I guess when the time draws close to Christmas then it will be announced.

Of course she did a good job- Lynn is a very good broadcaster, but to be given the show because she is a woman, is outrageous. More female presenters? Oh yeah, as ,long as they’re all on before anyone gets up. Let’s get rid of Steve Wright- have a woman in that slot – that would mean something: that would be a serious attempt at equality and balance. But no, Bob Shennan isn’t really interested in equality and balance, he’s just a box-ticking multi-choice commercial bureaucrat, and a second-rate one at that. He’s so transparent! Does no one have any balls these days? Come on Bob, you’re supposed to be in charge, running the joint, not pandering to some pre-defined plastic coated idealistic box-ticking protocol. That is for people who don’t know what to do!

Ruddles, as for giving the show to someone because they turned up at short notice to do a fill-in job – that’s a pathetic reason- she got paid quite handsomely for doing it- that is reward enough. I called a taxi at 4am this morning, without notice. It turned up, the driver did a good job, but he won’t be driving for McLarren next week. Perhaps you think he should?

It wouldn’t look bad at all, Mark; it would look decisive, it would look like the management knew what they were doing, it would look like they had a joined up plan. I wouldn’t worry one jot about upsetting a rival broadcaster or poaching their staff. It’s a big bad world out there- stuff happens. What is wrong with managers these days? You can make things happen for you, or you can let things happen to you. It’s not a difficult choice.

Rachel again i agree with you about losing Steve Wright whom i feel is past his best and if they were to get a female instead look no further then Janice( i know i know it won't happen) but she would liven up a rather bland daytime
