John - you're still using phpBB2.0 which is susceptible to hacks, worms and other exploits. I'd advise you to upgrade to the latest implementation of phpBB3.0 and include a "are you human" challenge (a manual question and answer challenge) to new signups which is almost guaranteed to keep out the Registration Bots. It's these that invariably exploit the weaknesses in phpBB2.0 and insert information via the text entry fields which then corrupts the site.
When I added this as a plug-in to one of my phpBB3.0 boards last year the auto-registrations by Bots dropped from about 50 attempts a day to zero. |
