Wow! That was some ambitious project. We chopped down 12 Eucalyptus trees in October, but they were nothing like so mature as that one. And so many greenhouses all around! I felt really bad about chopping ours down, as they were relatively young, say 5-8 years old, but they grow so fast. _________________ Minx

The tree ( a Silver Birch) was 60 years old, planted when the house was built... we got married under it. I loved that tree, spent many a sunny afternoon high in the branches reading. It was pretty much at the end of its life though, lots of rotten branches and it was too big and too close to the house, so it had to go in case it or part of it fell down. It was surprisingly easy to saw it down in stages and just with hand-saws too, it went from being a full tree to a pile of wood and a stump in less than a day… the clearing up will take much longer.. our shredder has died a painful death this morning, so hubby is chopping it up then taking it to the dump in garden bin things… the big trunk sections are of interest to a neighbour with a log-burner… but he’s not keen on doing any of the sawing himself. |

I'm exhausted just looking at those photographs and thinking of the scale of the job!
And the memories... but now it's gone.
I feel a Monty Python song coming on...
