So did anyone hear this sitcom on Saturday? I'd say it was "promising" but I'd be being overly optimistic. It was a bit of a shambles, and the actors playing the kids had really annoying voices. The show just didn't sound natural, and was rather forced.

Anyway, review in today's Guardian:
Quote:

The best bit about the new Radio 2 sitcom, Teenage Kicks (Saturday), is the music. Scenes in the series about 49-year-old Vernon (played by Adrian Edmondson), who moves into his teenage children's student flat after a nasty divorce, are linked with stirring clips of music from his punk heyday. There are also some good music gags, too: a tribute band, made up of plumbers, called Never Mind the Ballcocks.

But the writing overall is patchy, and the laughs too rare. There are some acutely painful moments, too, clustered around Ben Elton's appearances as Vernon's friend, Bryan. His wife is cooking a Jamie Oliver recipe for him, Bryan explains, but she gave him a look as he left "that says if I'm late, there's going to be a bottle of sun-dried tomatoes where the sun will no longer be able to dry them". Yes, that really is a line from the show. It's The Young Ones turned into the unfunny Middle-Aged Ones; no wonder the live audience laughter was strained. The situation in this sitcom should be comedy gold. So far, it isn't.
