I must listen again to today's show as I only heard little sections of it.. Firstly the "Should the Burqa be allowed"...... (no imo)
and, the debate about Firemen putting their feet up whilst on shift...

From my point of view, our local Fire Dept. has backed right off from training staff and, inspections! We used to be inspected every year by two Fire Officers.
Then we had a period of inspection by the full crew... Fire Engine too.... 8 or more Fire Officers clambering about the place!
Then a period of nothing - like for two years.
Before Christmas, we had an inspection by one retired Fire Officer but.. the onus is now squarely placed on us to "self assess" and produce a written risk assessment of the property and individual areas.

So, my 40 page assessment was typed, bound and laminated ready for his perusal and he didn't even look at it upon his return.
Passing the Buck is the term I believe.

I'm not knocking our Fire Department but.. on a visit to their station recently, it was clear that Ping Pong, Snooker and big screen TV takes up a fair chunk of the shifts..
I don't think the chap mentioning to Jeremy helped saying that "active" fire fighting work was around 5% of the working week.

I may be slightly biased against them as I had a run in with a Fireman last week.. both puffed up like a pair of fighting Cocks in the street..
Hope he doesn't have to come to us in a real fire!! Laughing
