Hello, does anyone know if or when the Trusts recommendations are going to have any effect on the daytime music on Radio 2?
I was hoping it was going to herald a step back to a greater variety of music again but if anything the playlist seems to be dominating even more than normal.
At the moment it's Goldfrapp, Rox(?), Paloma Faith and Scouting For Girls which seem to be on a constant rotation.
How on earth can that be appealing to an older listenership?
There are thousands of records old and new that never get played at all.
WHY? |

Thanks for that your Lordship, I didn't realise there was a consultation period.
Looks like I was being a bit hasty!!!
Also have to say that I hope they keep a great mix of different types of music, just not rely on the playlist so much. |

I think it will turn out to be a waste of effort anyhow. If "Call Me Dave" and his party win the election on May 6th they'll look at making sweeping changes to the BBC regardless of the findings of the consultation (Thatcher will eventually get her wish of decimating the BBC, let's face it). If Brown's lot are re-elected, the Trust will then have to grovel to the Culture Secretary to try and keep things on the same track as now.
I don't trust the Trust (that were good, weren't it!), but I'd hate to see nothing between the BBC and OfCom. Better the devil, and all that, I guess.... |

The consultation period is for the BBC Strategy Review/closure of 6 Music & Asian Network etc.
What Gazmando is asking is about the seperate BBC Trust review of Radio 2 and 6 Music which was published a few months ago at http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbctrust/news/press_releases/february/radio2_6music.shtml - there was a consultation period for that but it was last year.
I can't answer your question as I don't know the answer.
However I suspect that some of the changes may wait until after the Strategy Review consultation finished, as I would suspect that if 6 Music and Asian Network were to close some of the music content would be brought over to Radio 2.[/i] _________________ Fred Hart

Still haven't noticed any change at all in the daytime musical output.
The majority of the music is female singers singing complete drivel such as Lady Gaga, Katy Perry etc.
Was it worth the Trust doing a review at all? |

They're "pop" musicians, which means that their output should really be of the moment. What I like about Lady Gaga is she that takes her work very seriously and is undoubtedly innovative. Let's be honest - "bland" she isn't, which is good enough for me!
I also like the work of artists like Little Boots - a very talented young singer / songwriter not long out of school. One thing Britain is still good at is encouraging new talent - although you wouldn't know it from the output of many UK radio stations (like Radio 2) or even record companies. It's no wonder that artists are harnessing the power of the web to market their own music their own way!
So - Gaga and Perry, top gals! |

Or even Simon Cowell's 'Reality' circuses. I'm sure those who emerge as winners on these shows are perfectly nice people and I bear them no ill feelings whatsoever and I hope they enjoy their 15 minutes of fame. I feel most sorry for them when Cowell eventually pulls the plug on them. I wonder if Mr Cowell was the inspiration for this Tom Petty track. I think the cap would fit perfectly! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqm7wl4wmJE _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

I love pop music too Colin, but I don't think the daytime output should be just young popstars, with forgettable music.
Surely there are loads of great records being released from people of all ages?
Today Steve Wright had Marc Almond on talking about his new album and as he went Steve played a track from the album which sounded interesting, but then he cut it off after about 1 min and started playing Lady Gaga again.
Why does it have to be like this?
I don't want Radio 2 to be obscure, just varied, it doesn't have to be one type of music nonstop. |

I agree - but I'm not talking specifically about "pop" music as such. There's loads and loads of crossover music now that can't be classified so neatly simply because more and more people are experimenting. A good example of this is "newcomer" Little Boots doing a Maida Vale session with Gary Numan for 6 Music. It's not pop, but what is it? Little Boots is fantastically talented but you'd never know it from the way she's treated by mainstream radio.

Well people of all ages are certainly getting their creations listed for download on iTunes, if that's what you mean. How mainstream radio and Tv are handling this output is open to question. Not very well in my estimation......

That's Radio 2's management for you.

Again, that's an issue to take up with the R2 Controller. Personally, I don't think he has much of a clue - though he'll stay in the job because he'll be seen as the guy who put Evans in to host the "Interactive fun for all the family" show. |

No, no change during the day but at least we get the utterly dull In Concert instead of Radcliffe & Maconie on Thursday night. That's progress! |

The only changes that have happened - so far - is the evening schedules. Weekday daytimes and weekends have remained unchanged.
The only major changes have been the introduction of Radio 2 In Concert on Thursday nights, and a recurring Terry Wogan series on Sunday mornings.
By the way, I agree with Ian Robinson about Mark Radcliffe and Stuart Maconie being dropped from Thursday nights. In my opinion, In Concert should be on at the weekend. |

I'd go along with that. In replacement of Alan Carr. I'd then be able to switch on Radio 2 earlier on saturday evenings. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

Yes, Gambo should move into Alan Carr's slot so In Concert can run from 8pm on Saturday. Sorted. |

I completely agree with the last two posters. Radio 2 In Concert would be more at home on a Saturday evening. I would have no problem with Alan Carr being axed to make way for Paul Gambaccini to return to his slot of yore.
At least Mark Radcliffe, Stuart Maconie and Paul Gambaccini have a passion about music and are very knowledgeable. Alan Carr could write his musical knowledge on the back of a postage stamp. |

I feel cheated as regards Radcliffe & Maconie. I don't feel happy about Penny Smith hosting an opera programme - nothing like catering to the minorities, and that is nothing like catering to the minorities! _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!
