I agree with the caller who claimed "all animals are equal" whether it be an Ant or Whale.. they should all be shown respect, and I take offence at Jeremy laughing at the suggestion.
The very idea that cruelty is "ok" as long it's only a small animal... makes me sick.
Giving away or awarding Goldfish as prizes is a terrible situation and should be banned straight away.

Did you never have a goldfish as a pet when you were junior school age though SF? I know I had a few.

I agree they should outlaw the giving of them away at fairgrounds, but I'd say if you went out to buy one you'd be more likely to look after it properly.

I didn't have Goldfish personally and I don't remember the family home having then either.
I do remember at that age thinking it just wasn't right for all the fish to be kept in those plastic bags for goodness knows how long whilst in the "care" of the Fairground people and, more worryingly, just what happened to those fish on the way home with some kid.
I'd bet many didn't make it home..
If I were in a position of power over these things, I'd ban the sale of those tiny Goldfish Bowls.. it must be a living hell for these creatures.
In fact, I'd probably ban Pet Shops from selling most creatures. There's no place for it these days.
I get angry about some people's attitudes to animals or birds and yes - insects too.
It's all I can do to bring myself to be sociable to the Farmer where my wife keeps her horse.. he actually traps and shoots Magpies for fun!! I complained about his actions to the RSPCA and they didn't want to know as it was his land.
Me and the missus have been out to his traps in the early am to free some of the poor birds.
( It doesn't help the case in that Magpies and Crows etc are amongst my favourite birds.. Sad )

Mine wasn't kept in one of those bowl, but a reasonably sized rectangular tank at home, with I think 2 at the most in there at a time.

I think the worst are some of the "designer" bowls that were available such as long tubes whereby the fish could only swim vertically! or the "Fish bowl" lamp bases and even worse.. those "Picture" aquariums which hung on the wall.. about 2" wide.. disgraceful - and they were sold by Pet World!

I just wonder if it's acceptable to allow small fish tanks or for that matter, Budgie cages? let alone snake or spider tanks.

I've not seen any of those SF as I must admit have never had any animals since then, apart from a cat some years ago which adopted us, with the owners consent.

Although the Government chickened out of national legislation, most local councils have passed byelaws banning the practice of giving away goldfish and other animals as prizes etc at fairs. I haven't seen any for many years, at Goose Fair, or any other local one, or at Skegness and its neighbours.

Ironically, my wife won a goldfish at Goose Fair about five years before we married (she'd be about 29 then), put it in an ordinary glass tank with ordinary tap water, which was obviously changed from time to time. It stayed at her mum's and lived to a ripe old age; in fact it outlived the three we bought for our son when he was about 6 or 7 from a proper fish aquarium, with all the trappings of tank, pump, water treatment agent, etc.

There was some public concern when the Victoria shopping centre installed this one...

which naturally attracts quite an audience of children peering in and tapping on the glass, but the RSPCA cleared it.

hmmm.. it's a big tank but that large fish doesn't have much of a life does it.
If it were filled with small fish like tropical Guppies or Zebras it would be better but I'd vote that it shouldn't have been provided in the first place... it's just not necessary.

Whilst we were away we watched quite a few episodes of a particular TV series about the work of Animal Medical Emergency Technicians in Houston, Texas (well the rest of the TV was rubbish!).

I never ceased to be amazed, not only at the cruelty of some owners (leaving horses to die in grassless fields, keeping twenty odd dogs in an infested stinking house and many other horrors too awful to mention). At the same time, I was totally wiped out by the utter kindness and bravery of these volunteers, who risked life and limb climbing trees, cliffs, going down down holes etc to rescue animals.

As one of them said: "Someone has to speak for the animals".
