Yes he will resign this coming Thursday.
Maybe Chris Evans is going to be the permanent host Monday through Friday inclusive. |

Odd isn't it!
I'd be quite happy if he went to the One Show permanently and left us to a pleasant breakfast show.

You know, it's funny that there are lots of posts about people not liking Steve Wright, or Jonathon Ross, or Russell Brand, or Elaine Page, or Ken Bruce, or Simon Mayo.
People just say " Oh actually, I quite like him/her" or "he/she is a lot better than....."

It has just been confirmed that Adrian Chiles is leaving the BBC and joining ITV to present GMTV and various other programmes. He has expressed his disappointment about the changes to The One Show. Another one hits the dust in the promotion of CE! What does he have that others appreciate and totally passes me by? |

Goodness only knows.
I do think that the One Show formula has reached its Best Before date anyway; turning it into an evening version of the breakfast news programme, with Chris Hollins, four nights a week, and into the Chris Evans Me-Me-Me show on Friday can only accelerate the day that it joins Nationwide on the scrapheap. _________________ Ron |

Not on a sticky wicket at all I'm afraid Minxie - Chris Evans has and always will be a popular presenter of both TV and radio. The fact is he is not everyone's cup of tea.
For what it's worth, I actually prefer Wogan on breakfast and I really miss his style and his show _________________ Chris Evans' Breakfast - doesn't sound quite as good as Chris Evans' Drivetime but good nonetheless! |

I think Adrian Chiles is absolutely right to tell the BBc to get stuff over this absurd decision to give Friday's One Show to Evans.
He is reported (in certain quality newspapers) to have been "livid" at being told about Evans' appointment after the deal had been done, so I don't blame him one bit.
The BBC really knows how to screw up a working formula - as they seem to be proving time and again.
Idiots. |

Sounds rather similar to the Johnnie Walker Drivetime situation when Dame Douglas was still at the helm of Radio 2.

So am I right in thinking that Chris Evans marched into The One Show offices and demanded he get the Friday show, as people keep implying that he marches in and takes peoples jobs?
Also, Adrian is livid that changes have been made to The One Show, so leaves and then just happens to get the GMTV job five days a week, AND hosts all the ITV football shows straight away?

Today it was announced that Chiles is leaving the BBC as a result of Evans' appointment to The One Show.
The BBC website is saying that Chris Hollins (from BBC Breakfast TV) is to replace him.
I wonder who'll take Adrian's role on The Apprentice You're Fired though! _________________ Fred Hart

Firstly it's widely known that Adrian Chiles initially turned down ITV a few months ago, but they obviously still wanted him.
As for Chris Evans, it's now common knowledge that Evans told Lesley Douglas that he would leave the station unless he could have Drivetime as he had been offered Breakfast elsewhere (was it Virgin? I forget). So I think we have the cut of the guy.
I believe Johnnie Walker's biography and several different accounts telling the same story from his 'Evening with Johnnie' shows.

The main BBC story is that they haven't yet decided upon Chiles' successor on The One Show. |

Adrian Chiles is good mates with Peter Fincham, the former Controller of BBC1. I think it's fair to assume that private conversations did actually take place between the former manager and former employee. I'd be surprised if a conversation along the lines of "When your BBC contract comes up, do you fancy coming over to ITV now that I'm in charge of programming?".
Chiles' first love is, of course, football, and the revamped ITV has been in need of a main sports presenter for some time now. He's ideal. As for his place on the GMTV sofa, I can't comment since I don't watch it, but his laconic, self-depracatory style will undoubtedly be an asset. It's a such a shame that stupid managers at the BBC simply cannot see their hands in front of their faces on this one.
I guess the Evans issue was, for Chiles, the final straw, so I can't blame him one bit for telling the BBC to get stuffed.
It seems that there are lots of people at the BBC who obviously haven't read a single page of "How to be a good manager"!!! |

I'm not surprised. The PR department will have been briefed to make the most of it - and make the BBC senior managers look stupid in the process. Chiles is being remarkably diplomatic, which indicates that he's been gagged by the BBC whilst his contract still has time to run (end of this month). |

Think you're on the wrong board Fred! This place is no longer "the Radio 2 Preservation Society" - in recent months its become a place for a group who have nothing better to do than whinge about Chris Evans at every opportunity. I used to visit the boards most evenings - this is the first time in well over a month that I've been on and sure enough - the first thread I see is all about CE and how "terrible" he is!
As I've said before if Chris Evans being on radio and TV is the biggest worry you have in life consider yourself f**kin' lucky..... |

I don't think Chiles is being gagged at all. He's being diplomatic because he may want to work for the BBC again at some point and can see no point in making enemies.

I'd be very surprised if there's nothing in his current contract which states that he's not allowed to make negative references to the press about his current employer (such things being a Press Office matter).
It's one of the most common contract clauses in this respect. |

Are any of you on here going to start any anti Adrian Chiles threads saying how horrible he is for stealing Andrew Castles and Ben Sheppards jobs on GMTV?
Or maybe how he is stealing Steve Riders or Jim Rosenthals jobs on the football coverage?
Then again it doesn't involve slagging Chris Evans off, so I guess not. |

I do feel for them but they aren't on Radio 2. It's a botch up which ever way you look at it and Evans is the one who has started it.
Sorry but you can't get away from that fact.

No, but then I don't care. Anyhow, GMTV has been in financial dire straits of late (and only recently rescued from Disney by ITV PLC) so it's a different scenario altogether.
My criticism is not about or at Evans but at the stupidity of BBC management for meddling with a successful format and for apparently "managing" the whole thing in such an appalling and underhand manner.
gazmando wrote: | Or maybe how he is stealing Steve Riders or Jim Rosenthals jobs on the football coverage? |
It's totally irrelevant. It's channel managers and senior executives that make the decisions.
gazmando wrote: | Then again it doesn't involve slagging Chris Evans off, so I guess not. |
I'm not one of those who "slags off" Evans (even if I can't stand the sound of the guy's voice), but I do criticise certain decisions that are being taken by senior managers who are entrusted with spending my money.
You'd think that, with all the "awaydays" and "country weekend think-tanks" and MBA courses that BBC executives are engaged in, that they could treat their employees with a bit more respect. Clearly, all the training money is being wasted if the manner in which Chiles has been treated is anything to go by. Proverbial drinking sessions and breweries are words that come to mind.
That's why I say I can't blame Chiles at all for sticking two fingers up at them. Peter Fincham obviously made a wise move very quickly. He does have the unenviable job of turning around GMTV quickly, after all; that's a completely different story from The One Show, let's face it.

I didn't see that Andrew and Ben were to get the chop at GMTV. I know ITV have taken full control, but Penny Smith is leaving and John Stapleton has been moved to another role. |

The BBC have really messed this one up. Never mind they brought in Chris Evans, why did they bring anyone in and disrupt a hit show? Odd behaviour.

All four were revealed as for the chop months ago in Private Eye. I wonder who their source is - Adrian Chiles? |

The plan was John Stapleton getting a new role, as Penny is leaving. No plans were for Ben and Andrew to get the chop. Also I said a few replies back that Eamonn Holmes and Kate Thronton were considered a return. Looks like a whole new look to GMTV come september. ITV have got to make it work, which I have my feelings give it a few years and that it for GMTV. ITV run the show into the ground. |

My thoughts entirely. It seems that the higher echelons of the BBC are hell-bent at getting Evans into the spotlight wherever they can and at any cost.
Very strange indeed. |

Sorry Mark but you're wrong about Ben Sheppard and Andrew Castle, it's been known for months.
I don't blame Adrian Chiles but I hope it doesn't all go belly up for him in the long run. As Colin says the BBC are to blame in going for Evans to upset the apple cart of a successful show.
