I agree. Rainbow Chaser is a great psychedelic track. That, and the Jethro Tull and Fairport Convention songs also played, come from the Island compilation album You Can All Join In which I have somewhere.

I wonder if they were requested by JCHPeacelily who loved the album and who posted frequently on the old Radio 2 board.

The cardinal rule bent so far this morning that it's black and blue.

Rave On by Buddy Holly, released April 1958.

Hardly surprising with the self indulgent Mr Swern in charge

I've been saying for months that he's obsessed with that era in music to the detriment of better things later in the sixties - for years I used to really look forward to SOTS on Saturday mornings but sadly not any more - now I can take it or leave it Sad

Listened to three or four utterly forgettable/unheard of tracks from '61/'62
Tuned out.

I agree. In fact the show yesterday was completely forgettable, full of mindless tosh from the early part of the decade, summed up by Brian Matthew's statement that Sealed With A Kiss was a typical 60's song Exclamation .

And that awful Goons type song....

And POTP 1963 wasn't much better. Thank God The Beatles came along that year and shook things up.

I thought it was another good show with classics such as...

The Drifters - Come On Over To My Place
The Everly Brothers - How Can I Meet Her?
Billy Fury - I'd Never Find Another You
Cream - I Feel Free Razz Razz Razz
Georgie Fame - Sunny
The Turtles - Happy Together
The Isley Brothers - I Guess I'll Always Love You
Roy Orbison - Blue Angel
Lonnie Donegan - Michael Row The Boat Ashore
Anthony Newley - D-Darling
Tom Jones - It's Not Unusual

plus, I didn't know The Beatles applied to be Billy Fury's backing band ( lost out to The Tornados )
and, I'd never heard " Jon - Is It Love?" which featured two of Lulu's "Brothers"...
also, I really enjoyed " Spike Milligan - Q5 Piano Song " which had me laughing out loud!

To contrast this, I got into the car after listening to my SOTS recording of yesterdays show only to hear "Bat out of Hell" on JW's show! AGAIN! Rolling Eyes

Contrary to Brian's statement, 'Hey Joe' was NOT included on Jimi Hendrix' first album Are You Experienced (it might have been on a reissued CD). It makes you wonder what other 'facts' they get wrong.
Still, at least he played it. I can't imagine Ken Bruce for example playing it.
That, and the sublime 'I'd Rather Go Blind' by Chicken Shack.

Apart from those two, the show consisted of the usual pre 1963 banal obscurities.

Brian said that the tracklisting would be on the website after the show. Well, it's now Sunday afternoon and it's still not there!

Another example of the producer not researching the facts thoroughly. I believe that "Hey Joe" was on the north America release of "Are You Experienced?" in 1967 but was not included on the UK/Europe release.

I thought the first hour was reasonable only to be followed by a poor second hour as often seems to be the case these days

I did enjoy the Zoot Money track 'Big Time Operator' - excellent and rarely played on R2 or anywhere else Sad

I think you're right, Colin, that it was on the US version.

LEE and Helen: funnily enough the music played for last night's SOT80s IS already on the website!

Yes, but that has been played before on SOTS, and not too long ago at that.

Zoot's a hoot - still going strong at 71, he comes out to play occasionally with his mates Colin Hodgkinson, Maggie Bell, Miller Anderson and Colin Allen in the British Blues Quintet.

Heard Ian Warburton's mention about the SOTS Facebook page on today's show.

Enjoyed Paul and Barry Ryan's Have Pity On The Boy and the Buckingham's 'Sign Of The Times' on the show.

The Dionne Warwick song at the end was excellent, a rarity I'd not heard before and the kind of song which SOTS is so good at picking out.

It was also nice to hear The Bee Gees' First Of May, the sort of song that never gets played on other shows. There were the usual factual errors though. Living In The Past was not on Jethro Tull's Stand Up album, merely on a later CD. And Forever Changes came out in 1967 not 68.

How strange to hear, for the first ever time, that version of He Was A Friend Of Mine. Today of all days ! Because Roger McGuinn, upon hearing of JFK's death, wrote an adaptation which, with references to Dallas and a 6th floor window, appeared on the Byrds album Fifth Dimension. It might have been an appropriate one to broadcast this morning.

One of the best editions of the show I've heard this year and I particularly enjoyed the Vogues track 'I've Got My Eyes On You' which I don't think I've heard anywhere for almost 45 years

Funny how one's memory can play tricks though - I would have sworn blind that the track was done by 'The Association' if anyone had asked me

I've checked and can't find any reference to any cover version by them so a gap in my musical knowledge has now been plugged it would seem Smile

Missed most of it so must find time to listen again.

Are they the same Vogues who did "You're The One" Ruddles? Don't think I know the track you mentioned.

The track I was referring to was an album track I think Helen but I do remember it was played frequently on certain shows on Radio One back in 1969 which as I've mentioned before for me was the best ever year for popular music

I don't know much about the Vogues other than that they were American so I can't say whether the track you mention was by them but it does seem unlikely for there to have been two artists of that name Smile

I record SotSs every week as I can listen to the show many times over and still enjoy it.. and it's soooo nice to have some decent back up for the dreaded 3pm dead zone on a Saturday!

I'm surprised the SotSs of a couple of weeks ago didn't get mentioned on here as it was so good.. many great tracks as compared to the previous week when, unusually for me, I chose to erase that recording as it was so bland.

Yes, this show almost blew me out of bed as soon as the first track started.. "All Day And All Of The Night" ... it put me in mind of the fantastic beginning to "The Boat That Rocked"
Others were..
Wait A Minute - The Coasters
If Paradise Is Half As Nice - Amen Corner
Here Come The Nice - Small faces
Man Of The World - (The proper) Fleetwood Mac Cool
You Keep Me Hanging On - Supremes
Maybe I Know - Lesley Gore
Dance On - Kathy Kirby
The Wind Cries Mary - Jimi
Beautiful People - Melanie
Michelle - The Overlanders (better than the Beatles version?? )

But the one which really cheered me up pre coffee was "Brand New Start" by the fabulous John Mayall.. so good to hear that again.
I must dig out some of my old Mayall stuff.

Another interesting song was "Take A Heart" by The Sorrows featuring Don Fardon on lead vocal... it went on to become "Indian Reservation" I think.. Laughing

A really great show.

I was interested to hear The Small Faces singing a song on yesterday's programme that I have only heard Timi Yuro sing before..What's The Matter Baby....love The Faces but their version isn't a patch on hers.

I've had a quick look on-line at the album that Brian took Tom Courtenay singing Mrs Mrs Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter from and see it also has songs from Dirk Bogarde, David Niven,Orson Welles,Anthony Perkins and Salvador Dali on it!

Nice to hear the tribute to Phil Everly, playing one I hadn't heard before..Hard,Hard Times.

On the website it lists Well I Ask You ...the Eden Kane song which Brian played ....as being sung by Marvin Gaye!!

Quite enjoyed this week's edition, heard all of it in the car.

A Girl Like You from Cliff was a favourite of mine around the time Summer Holiday came out, and a rarely heard track.

Good to hear Bobby Vee's More Than I Can Say. It's 55 years ago tomorrow Feb 3rd that he stood in for Buddy Holly who had been killed in a plane crash earlier that day. I sometime listen to an online station from Bismarck N Dakota where Bobby comes from (Fargo) and they on Friday they said he is releasing a new album tomorrow despite his suffering from Alzheimer's. Bill Kenwright mentioned him not being well in his last series.

What an excellent show this morning - especially the first hour which contained the greatest proportion of British music I think I have ever heard in the history of the show - and even the American imports such as The Association were good

Great to hear a Cliff Bennett track - as Brian said one of the most underrated singers of that era - not to mention some original Fleetwood Mac and that superb offering from 1969 'All The Love In The World'

Even the Brenda Lee song was recorded and produced in Britain and is probably her best ever track in my view

I haven't been able to check the playlist yet as it hasn't appeared to date but I'm wondering whether Mr Swern's losing his memory in his old age and thinks today is April 23rd Laughing

I thought SOTS was as average as usual. There were the weekly banalities from Adam Faith and Roy Orbison and the usual obscurities.

The highlight for me was the track from Dusty In Memphis. And 'Just Like A Woman' by Manfred Mann is a classic. I'm glad I heard Dion's 'Abraham Martin and John' for the first time, though I have to say it was pretty soulless and bland compared to Marvin's wonderful version.

I'd have thought Dylan's original Just Like A Woman, is the classic version, though Mighty Quinn has claims to be a better version than His Bobness.

Thought you might...The Manfreds , in all their guises, have always made good covers, haven't they...a few better than the originals. I'm thinking also of Blinded By The Light, which I much prefer to Springsteen's.

This original is a cracker, though, backed just by a piano and what sounds like a bloke slapping his thighs...
