Ok Santa
NG - Pre 1974 Norfolk County Council subsequently allocated to Norwich
EW - Pre 1974 Huntingdonshire CC subsequently allocated to Peterborough
BJ - East Suffolk subsequently allocated to Ipswich
RT - East Suffolk subsequently allocated to Ipswich
You're right about EX being the old Great Yarmouth registration reallocated to Norwich in 1974
There's a person employed by the DVLA in Swamsea whose job it is to sift out potentially offensive registrations or those which might be considered in bad taste so for example GOD SEX VD were never issued
However the current occupant of the job can't be that good as there is a car down the road from here with the registration P155 OFF _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

I wish I had that... I love it!
Yes, my old Austin came from Norwich and the Consul and Zephyr from Lowestoft so spot on!
Great Yarmouth used to be a big Herring fishing port and each year would see hundreds of Drifters using the quayside... You'll possibly know, but as kids, we used to like to "identify" each boat's home port from the two letters on it's "woodbine" funnel.
I can't remember many now but YH was Yarmouth, LT Lowestoft, PD Peterhead, FH Fraiserburgh and H Hull... lots of free fish teas laying on the quay back then... _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Santa sorry to nitpick but you're Austin would not have actually come from a dealers in Norwich if it was registered pre 1974 because it had a Norfolk County Council Registration which covered the whole of Norfolk excluding the City of Norwich
Norwich City had it's own separate registration letters notably CL and VG so your car could have come from a dealers close to Norwich but not actually within the city boundaries
If the car was registered post 1974 on the DVLA system then it would have been Norwich
As for fishing boats I'm not an expert but I know PW is Padstow PZ is Penzance FY is Fowey and OB is Oban
By the way I think this is a far more interesting discussion than the original one concerning Chris Tarrant _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles?

I'm sure I still have the old buff Log Book somewhere... but you must be correct. I remember saying it was originally from Norwich but it could have been a close "district" to the city back in 1938. If I find it I'll let you know. Yes, I've had a few CLs and VGs now you mention it... mostly Fords!
I used to love those old Drifters and remember dozens and dozens of them lined up along the quay here but alas, the late 50s and 60s was virtually the end of an era for the Great Yarmouth Herring industry.. in the early part of the century, there were thousands of boats about, many racing to get into the harbour first to unload and get top money for their silver catch. Pictures of the harbour entrance show 20 boats or more coming in at the same time... not a place for health and safety back then. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Good. I happened to be hearing Steve Wright's show this afternoon (not by choice, I hasten to add) and it was arduous! |

CT back covering this week. Loving the Battle of the Oldies and the banter between Sally and him. Chris does connect well with the listeners. |

The Oldies played today were excellent: Stay With Me, Out Of Time, Nights In White Satin, Let It Be, I'd Rather Go Blind (not heard that on the radio since 1969).
However, I wish Tarrant would get his facts right. Firstly, Nights In White Satin was recorded 45 years ago, not 30. Secondly, the vocalist was Justin Hayward not John Lodge. Thirdly, the song The Beatles song they played from the rooftop which later included Billy Preston was Get Back, not Let It Be.
Yesterday his speech was slurred and he was talking at 100mph and I suspect he'd partaken of too much liquid refreshment for lunch. I suspect he'd enjoyed the same hospitality today. It took him about 10 minutes to realise that the half Italian lady listener he was talking to with the Italian surname had an Italian father and English mother, and not the other way round. The hyperactive buffoon is really too much at times, a sort of Chris Evans without the charm. |

Yes I heard all that and was shouting at the radio! How absurd....

Personally, I'd have left off the "...without the charm" from that sentence. "Buffoon" is a most appropriate description of Evans, for sure. That said, I can tolerate listening to Tarrant. |

Think you need to drop the "s" from that word Mark as clearly it's just you.
Whoever thought that employing someone to present a radio show - albeit on a stand in basis - would prequisite an unhealthy obsession with heavy rock music and the God given right to inform a listener that their choice of music is crap.
Bob Shennan of course
And all that sucking through the teeth as well.....really poor radio and it only serves to prove that SW is not really that bad at all. |

Love him or hate him CT does connect well with the listeners. He has tight links. It's not as if he's been away from the Radio. |

I can certainly see what Helen and Santa are saying and I agree up to a point but I have to say I can think of many worse presenters on Radio 2 _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

That would explain the high-pitched voice occasionally.

Surely he'd have to switch it off when he's doing the telly?

Good listening to Tarrant back covering Wrighty. Playing his own music and banter between him and Sally is funny. I think she has a hots for him
