I sent one in about the nimrod but it was over long, but just wanted to say what I felt. They are just a couple of miles from me, but I've also had use of the World service when the Russian coup happened and we found the WS on the hotel's satellite link. It was so reassuring to hear news calmly being read against the over hype we'd had for 2 or 3 days.
I'd still save Nimrod though!

I think it's a mistake to get rid of the new Nimrods and the Harriers that have gone already, it's a big bad world out there.
The cuts to BBC World Service are being blamed on reduced Government funding but that is not true because the deal to leave the licence fee as it is, instead of reducing it, included the BBC fully funding the World Service- so any cuts to the World Service are BBC cuts not Government funding cuts.
"The settlement will keep the licence fee at its current level of £145.50 until 2016/17. Under the settlement the television licence fee will fund the World Service, and the BBC will make a contribution to funding S4C through a partnership."

Cancelling the new Nimrods not only jeopardises our security but is a waste of criminal proportions, but politicians are well versed in the act and seem to have been able to do it with impunity, ever since Harold Wilson got rid of TSR2.
There is always an indecent haste in the act, as well. Six years in the making, all traces gone in six weeks.
The Harrier was a beautiful aircraft, and its manoeuvrability and S/VTOL capability still world-beating after forty odd years. Made an awful lot of noise and couldn't carry much in the way of armour and weaponry though. As with that other British icon they ditched with alacrity, Concorde, the cost of keeping them going was probably prohibitive.
The World Service has already been cut back, several times. Neither Government nor BBC seem to consider it as important as it once was, and I suppose that, in the areas of the world most in need of relatively unbiased news reporting the signal is highly likely to be jammed anyway. _________________ Ron |

Poor old Simon Mayo: if he reads this thread, he’ll be thinking what the heck is going on? Nimrods? Harriers? BBC World Service? Jeremy Vine? Skulduggery? I’m just a guy who plays records on the radio- I don’t do controversy…..The good news is, our new kettle, is a rapid-quiet-boil kettle: it’s way cool beans, it has a blue light and a snazzy switch, but the best bit, is we can still hear Drivetime while the kettle is boiling- it really doesn’t make much noise at all: technology rarely impresses me, ipod schmipod who cares? But a kettle that makes no noise- it’s magic, I’m blown away by that. |

Someone posted this video of one of the Harrier's 'goodbye' visits to connected airfields (Harriers were made at Dunsfold) Sadly, anyone at Dunsfold airfield would only have been able to hear them due to the weather on the day: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5ipLQT-Zag&feature=player_embedded I don't know if the Harriers came back for a proper visit on a better day. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

John Bishop said nice things about my theatre on Simon Mayo's show last night, and Simon read my tweet out. That was lovely! |

I wondered if it was from you Ian! I missed most of the interview sadly though.

I may be going against the trend but I think Amol Rajan is doing a good job as stand-in for Simon Mayo. I wasn't impressed at first but I think he's improved greatly and seems to have a good rapport with Bobbie and Matt and the guests to the programme.
I don't think I'm influenced by his association with my newspaper of choice |

I'll agree he has improved since the first week essexlady. I enjoyed his interview with Al Gore the other night as well.

I think I'd enjoy him more on 5 Live than some of the presenters currently on there, but I've not really taken to him on Radio 2. |
