Very sad to hear that veteran conductor Sir Charles Mackerras has died at the age of 84.

He was conductor of the BBC Concert Orchestra in the 50s and later his work was often heard on R2. Thoguh he embraced a very wide classical repertoire, he retained a lifelong affection for lighter music, notably Gilbert and Sullivan. His ballet Pineapple Poll, which is a patchwork quilt of tunes from the G and S operettas, remains a constant delight to me. My sympathy to his family.

Ian.
