Autobiographies should be banned too. I think I'll write a book. What shall I write about? What do I love? What do I know about? I know! I'll write a book about meeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Nobody cares! Evil or Very Mad

I agree. The whole point of an autobiography is to get the full story of the subject's life. It should therefore be unlawful for people to compose their autobiography until they've snuffed it.

That will, of course, lead to a degree of predictability in the last sentence in each case: "I'm signing off now because I'm not feeling well".

Smile That's more or less what the late Frank Muir did, although his autobiography was published a little before he actually died.

I'm with you all on this, and what a waste of time, energy and trees!
Bookshops, already shrinking, could go back to being the small, intimate, peaceful places they were before all the biogs and cookery books came along - might we then discover some decent fiction hitherto hidden deep in the recesses of Waterstones?

The last biography I read was Sheila Hancock's moving account of John Thaw's life, and struggle with the cancer that killed him. Actually, no, that's not true - I did also read Johnnie Walker's, which was quite interesting, but a bit offhand somehow.

What I find annoying is that nowadays these people seem to think that a single autobiography is not enough

They end up publishing one at the age of thirty which is far too young and then have to publish at least one more to cover what happened after the coverage set out in their first effort ended

There should be an unwritten rule that nobody publishes an autobiography until they at least reach retirement age unless there are good reasons to deviate from this - for example if they are diagnosed with a terminal illness at a younger age

This would not prevent them from writing books about specific events which are of general interest but just leave the autobiographical stuff until readers can judge it in the context of a whole lifetime

To be fair, the problem lies with publishers. They all vie with other to sign up the latest celeb flavour of the month because they know there's cashing-in to be had. That's why they bid against each other for deal with our favourite "celebs". With most people's careers being relatively short these days, you can understand why they have to get a book out quickly in order to maximise the profit potential.

Gary Barlow to co-host breakfast show. Why does Chris always need someone to co -host the show?

ESP! This is deja vu... we've been here before. He should get Nick Baines to do it - they sound exactly the same and the Bish will be much cheaper.

What happened to the days when presenters could put out a programme on their own?

All the good and great have moved on I suppose.

It is my licence money paying for these extra twats and I object strongly

Couldn't agree more Blondehedgehog! It's a rare treat to have someone sound like they are talking to you the listener and not their sidekick.

There's a joke response ready and waiting in my head, but I'd better stay on the side of decency!

Same here, I have not tuned in at all from Monday to Friday this week. I have listened today though (to SOTS and POTP).

Those are two of the three progs I actually do go out of my way to listen to as well, Angela. The third is Johnnie Walker. That said, I listen to all of them on iPlayer during the following week.

By the way, Rick Wakeman isn't doing his "Rick's Place" show on Planet Rock. David Jensen in now presenting an excellent show between 10.00am and 1.00pm.

We've completely tuned away during the week. We return at the weekends, (though not for Zoe Ball/D O'L spot and the squawking one).

Job done, Mr Shennan. Take a bow. Rolling Eyes

Many listeners felt the same when Bob was running BBC Radio 5...He joined the Channel 4 bid of starting some DAB stations. That fell through.

The Radio 2 controller resigned over the Ross/Brand debarcle and...Bob now is charge of BBC Radio 2...

Shame Channel 4 dropped out of the DAB thing, we may not have Shennan but then heaven knows who we might have got instead.

Helen, it makes you wonder if there really was so few people to choose from.

Bob signed up Bacon to Radio 5.

When he came back to the BBC(and he was in charge of BBC6 Music too)

He brought in Richard Bacon as a temporary replacement for Jeremy Vine's programme and Bacon was also signed up for a programme on BBC6 Music.

He is a presenter that really divides the audience.

Sorry but I thought Richard Bacon was probably the worst standin there has ever been on the Jeremy Vine show, with the possible exception of Amanda Platell. So I'm not unhappy if it means he won't be on again.

That's the problem. For nearly three decades now British broadcasting - and particularly the BBC - has suffered at the hands of people who are "managers" and accountants first and broadcasting enthusiasts second. (I put the word "managers" in parentheses intentionally).

It does annoy me how these people are now running our radio and TV networks. Surely there are loads of people who are passionate about radio and TV and who can also provide really good, talented leadership based upon a solid practical experience of broadcasting?

On the basis of his dismal track record with Radio 2 far, Shennan certainly doesn't appear to have any passion for radio at all. So why is he managing (for want of a more appropriate verb) one of the world's biggest radio networks?

Helen, I'm not a fan either and it was Bob who brought Bacon to Radio 5, Radio 2 and BBC 6 Music or during Bob's watch and when he started to appear on these other networks run by Bob listeners were worried.

When Bacon was on Radio 5 after some months he left to go to Capital Radio, I don't what went wrong but the Capital job came to and end. Then Bacon was resigned to Radio 5 where he still is.

You make many good points Colin.

Just before Bacon went to Capital they tried him out on BBC7(not one of Bob's networks)as announcer on the Breakfast slot and I have never ever seen such adverse reaction from listeners to his style and attitude. It was a time where the BBC7 messageboard and Digital Spy overheated.

And it takes a lot to annoy BBC7 listeners.

Sadly, Mayo's move to Drivetime on Radio 2 means Bacon has taken his 5Live slot, which I adored, and totally run it into the ground. Bacon is a fatuous, ignorant, self-absorbed, irritating presenter with very little understanding of the world beyond the shiny things he sees on screens and displays a remarkable ability to wind up his guests, or miss their point entirely.

The Honeymoon period is over with Robbie Williams and the guys. It would all eventually end in tears, and he be off to do his own music. Take That fans will have to bite there tongues and get on with it. Robbie only came back, because of pressure and found the time out to do this.

Mark, why must it "end in tears"??? You have no idea what goes on behind the scenes - the reunion may only have been for a finite period anyway.

From the start it was said that they would be a five piece for a finite period. They just haven't said how long that period will be.

This thread seems to have died, is it the fact that we are all now happily listening to the great CE or has everyone completely given up and gone elsewhere?

Perhaps it might have something to do with the fact that Simon Bates is now presenting a far superior offering and I say that even though I am not a huge Bates fan

Having the Golden Hour back is excellent Very Happy

Have to agree, have been at home this week so far so I can listen on DAB, its a pain that its not available everywhere on FM. Shame about the ads!

I reckon Evans employment on R2 its a government ploy to get us all listening to DAB!

How about that for a conspiracy theory?!

I don't bother joining CE threads so much as I am fed up with him. I don't listen to him and avoid him at all cost. My bleeting about it is not going to change things. The BBC are a law unto themselves and will do what they want.......

The original intent of this thread was to have a bit of a moan about the number of times Chris mentions The One Show (TOS) on the Breakfast Show. Being a big Breakfast Show fan but also being a non TOS viewer I found it distracting and annoying that so much of the breakfast show was being taken up with things Chris was doing on Telly- things I would never and will never watch. It’s a bit like a Ballet Dancer/part time Lifeboat Crewman, turning on stage in his oilskins, wellies and lifejacket to be Prince Siegfried in Swan Lake. It’s not what the audience want. Chris still mentions TOS now and again but I'm happy to report that it's now less often. Prince Siegfried..... "Oh go on... please"... "OK just the wellies then"

Hate is such a strong emotion, Helen. Do you really hate him or is it just a strong dislike?

It is Rachel, but I feel very strongly about it. I do hate his show and his voice, and 'Evan's dislikers' didn't sound right as I was typing the message!

I don't hate many things but I'm afraid Evans is one of them.
