The status on the RadioToday Facebook page says:
Quote:
BREAKING: Sarah Kennedy leaving BBC Radio 2. More soon at RadioToday.co.uk with BIONICS

I haven't listened to R2 much over the last few weeks, but RadioToday is quite reliable with radio news (being run by those working in the industry), so I see no reason for this to be untrue.

So have any of you heard anything about SK?

An update: just found on the BBC Press Office that Sarah Kennedy IS leaving Radio 2.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2010/09_september/03/kennedy.shtml

Lynn Parsons will present for the next 4 weeks, and then they'll announce what'll happen in the future.

Yet another presenter forced out by Evans' demands.

It really makes me angry how much trouble that horrible man can cause all because he wants to dominate the airwaves.

I don't want to say I told you so, but, I told you so in January. Nobody listens to me!

Sarah will be ok- she'll get a gig somewhere.

Another nail in the coffin for Radio 2.

A sad day, for many people. Don't know why she's going, but I would have thought she could have come back for a last hurrah.

The end of an era - best wishes for the future Sarah.

It's the early starts MiS, caused by Evans of course.

The white van man phrase was coined by Sarah............

Fran Godfrey quoted her on the midday news. "The temptation to batter my alarm clock in the morning was just getting to much". It's a sad day, however I have hardly heard her this year since they rolled back her show time. Bob Shennan, when announcing Chris Evans was taking over from Wogan, called Sarah Kennedy the 'lynchpin' of the mornings - clearly he didn't really believe that otherwise he would have enforced Evans to start at 7.30am. It's a shame she has not had the opportunity to take her show to the weekend, and I do hope it's not the last we've heard of her.

In terms of what to do now for Radio 2? How about reinstating Janice Long's three hours and letting Alex extend his show from 3am to 7am. I've been on strange hours this past fortnight and have listened to more of Alex than I had previously. He's a consummate broadcaster who could keep the dawn patrol a pleasure to listen to.

Also - did anyone else hear about the 'presenter's meeting' that Radio 2 had on Wednesday night. I heard Evans, Ken and Jeremy discussing it on Thursday - and Radcliffe & Maconie pre-recorded Wednesday's show "for reasons we can't go into". I know I sound like a crackpot theorist but I wonder if this was about Sarah?

Nick,

I wondered that as well when I heard Ken and Jeremy discussing it yesterday.

That’s pretty much what we discussed way-back when they announced the new morning schedule with Chris E from 07:00 – Sarah’s 5-7 slot was always going to be a temporary thing. I’m surprised it lasted as long as it did.
Loads of people will be upset about her leaving, and in particular, why, and the way she's leaving/left. Leaving after so many years should be a station event, not a casual press release.
Even if the current management don’t like her, they cannot ignore the fact that their lofty status in the broadcasting world is partly built on the shoulders of her unique genius and hard work.

Jeremy Vine just played Sara from Fleetwood Mac as his closing track, a nice thought if it was for SK.

It's more likely that it was a crisis meeting to discuss the dire state of the station as a whole. There's a helluva lot of disquiet at Western House at the moment and it's a very likely scenario.

The day Evans was first given a regular gig behind a Radio 2 mic was the day the rot set in with the station.

With the exception of one or two gems, Radio 2 is crap! That's my opinion.

I haven't listened to her much since the change in time slot, but I'm sorry that she's leaving in this way. I'm sure, given the choice, she'd have preferred to say goodbye in her own way.

It might have been quite spectacular! Shocked

Perhaps that's what they were afraid of.

It may have been "kamikaze radio" but boy would have been good entertainment - better even than DLT's resignation from a Matthew Bannister-controlled Radio 1!

Whatever the real reasons for her departure in this way, it certainly reflects something of the way in which Radio 2 is being managed. Is the controller guilty of creating a climate of fear, perhaps?

No wonder so many people working in BBC radio (and television, for that matter) are suffering from paranoia these days. Hardly an exemplar of good HR management practice, methinks.

Whatever the reason for SK leaving it certainly seems a very strange way to finish such a long career on Radio 2 doesn't it?

I can't wait for Sarah's autobiography. It'll knock a certain Mr Blair into a cocked hat.

As for the statement about the rot at Radio 2 - I feel it began years before Chris took over from Sir Terry. I like Chris Evans, but I do agree that since Johnnie Walker left drive, the station has not had the familiar feeling it once had.

It might be worth keeping an eye on the tabloids in the coming days - unless, of course, she's agreed to a gagging clause. There's something dodgy about this whole thing and people are right to ask questions.

Personally, I think that egotistical creep Evans has much to do with it.

Seems she gone without saying bye to her listeners? I wonder if she will turn up at Classic FM as Simon Bates is leaving to join Smooth Radio in January? Lynn can only committ until October or I would have thought she had taken the slot. Maybe Liza Tarbuck or Nikki Bedi will take over? Or maybe Alex will continue and Chris show will be moved forward?

A while ago Sarah said that she had been told not to chat to the newsreaders or travel presenters, as she kept doing it this could be part of the problem. She kept making remarks about Moira and the loudmouth, sometimes they were quite pointed. In the end she probably didn't care any more, I know the feeling well. I will miss her although I am enjoying Lynn's shows at the moment. I dread to think who will be inflicted on us now. Getting up at 5.30am for work, I need someone gentle to listen to. Sad

How did I know that it would be Chris Evans fault that Sarah left!!!
Certain people on here are like broken records.
Also Colin B, the rot didn't set in when Chris joined Radio 2, it set in years before when Frances Line left as controller.
When she was there you had great presenters playing a brilliantly varied selection of music from Val Doonican to The Sex Pistols.
I don't believe you ever heard the same record during the daytime shows and you never knew what was going to be played next, just how Radio 2 should be now in my opinion.
It's a sad day that Sarah is leaving and I can't believe she has gone without saying goodbye.
I wish you all the best Sarah and will miss your eccentricity and your showtune slot, which I guess will be replaced by another playing of a song from the playlist YAWN

I don't agree. The day Evans was signed up (by Lesley Douglas) was a day that many of us knew would end in tears. Evans' presence at R2 has upset many people - both inside the organisation and out - and in that respect I maintain that his joining R2 was "the day the rot set in".

Just look at the effect he's had on BBC1's The One Show. For some completely cock-eyed reason, the programme editor (and, no doubt, senior BBC management) decided that Adrian Chiles wasn't good enough to co-host a revamped Friday edition and that, by hook or by crook, they were going to shoehorn the egotistical and gobby Evans in there on the pretext that he actually has talent. And after deciding this, they didn't even have the guts or decency to tell Chiles before putting out a press release. The cowardly, two-faced gits! It's no wonder he said "sod you" and jumped ship to ITV. I can't blame Christine Bleakley for following him either, because the rot had already set in. They will never learn, will they? Anyone who can bear to watch the friday edition of the show can see that it just doesn't work and that all Evans wants is attention - at any cost. It's just cringeworthy television and I cannot watch it at all.

So, they've not only ruined Radio 2 but they've also completely ruined The One Show and, guess what? - they've annoyed a lot of people working at Western House and also at White City. The day they took that stupid decision to engage Evans on Fridays was the day the Rot Set In for The One Show.

And did Evans care? Like hell he cared. All he desperately wants is maximum exposure for himself and he doesn't care what damage this does to anybody else.

The guy is a self-serving cretin of the highest order.

And as for "stuck record" - you've described Evans perfectly.

Alex Lester has just posted the following on his Twitter account (alexthedarklord) in response to people having a similar idea to some of us:

The controller will decide. I think the twitter campaign has started. You are kind.

Let's hope it happens - I want this for Janice as much as for Alex.

It's a no brainer really, Janice 12-4- Alex 4-7, anything else would surely lead to further departures.

Forgive me but I am struggling to see how this is the fault of Chris Evans Confused

Getting back on topic if I may, I think it is very unfortunate to say the least that Sarah has not had a chance to bid a proper farewell especially given that she has been doing it for so long.
Whatever the reasons behind it I wish her well.

I imagine 'Scott' was dancing in the street when he heard about it.

Toggy,

The reason we are blaming Evans is the it is no secret that he demanded the times of the breakfast show be changed so forcing Sarah's show to start an hour earlier. Alex and Janice to had to make changes to theirs as well, all to accommodate him.

It's the same as when he forced Lesley Douglas to give him Drivetime 3 years ago or else he would leave the station. I'm sure a few of us wished he had just done that!

I won't go into the One Show debacle but it's the same principle. They should change the name to Radio Evans

The reason is very simple: Evans has managed to negotiate with the BBC a very lucrative contract, and with it comes power. There can be no doubt that he's pulling a lot of the strings within Radio 2 - and partly explains why many people working at the station are very unhappy with things as they have been since he joined.

I'll put money on it that it has had something to do with Sarah Kennedy's decision to walk, too. Perhaps the controller said something like: "Look Sarah, if you don't like it you know what you can do......"?

If that's the case, then it looks like she acted accordingly. I can't say I blame her. Stuff the lot of 'em!

You don't know that for sure though, I grant you it may be true then again it may not.
I assume you also blame global warming, the state of the economy and the Pakistan cricket fix on Chris Evans as well do you?

I not a fan of his far from it, personally he is too lively for me first thing. However there are plenty of others out there who do like him and as I've said before it would be a dull old world if everybody liked the same things Smile

I'am a little shocked that Sarah is leaving Dawn Patrol and really Lesley Douglas and Bob Shennan knew Sarah situation. She has been struggling for many years getting up early and ploughed through it until the bitter end. They could have kept her on and sat down and said "look we will give you a weekend show to keep you on at the station. People can't also come on these forums and blame Chris Evans, he had signed for the station years before Wogan was going to leave. He was the best too take over the show. Breakfast was still running in the dark ages like it is at present. No Radio breakfast radio show really starts at 7.30am let alone the new time 7am. I think the last resort was Sarah had to either keep going sick and going on under her own mental strain. or leave on her own free will, which I beleive is partly wrong. The station is looking for new people too fill some shows to sound fresher. I'am not putting sarah down, but she could also have said "bye to her loyal listeners. Maybe she will appear on This Morning, The One Show or where ever in the future to do this? Best Of luck to the future for Sarah. Next stop Classic FM Wink

Ps Yes Dawn Patrol should be scrapped now with no new face to take over.

12-3.30am Janice Long

No. I just blame the current state of the station on "the Evans factor". I think that's fair and reasonable under the present circumstances.

What is "Sarah situation" exactly?

mark occomore wrote:

Alex Lester seems to have managed it OK and he, like Sarah Kennedy, had a contract which required him to get up early. Both he and Sarah signed contracts knowing that this is a prerequisite. I think the problems with Sarah cut deeper than is obvious.

mark occomore wrote:

He was signed to the station by a controller who had him lined up to succeed Wogan when he eventually decided to step down. It was obvious at the time and is obvious now. It was all part of the plan to bring Evans back to the fore at the BBC - and that plan is still being implemented.

mark occomore wrote:

Rubbish. There are plenty of presenters up and down the land who are capable of doing a much, much better job.

mark occomore wrote:

At present? So - Evans isn't the best person to do the job? Make your mind up Mark!

What is this fixation you have for ClassicFM? Is it some kind of dumping ground for retired R2 presenters? Why would she want to work for ClassicFM unless she has a good working knowledge of Classical music?

Why? It seems quite a good format to me.

I will be honest and say i am not Sarah's biggest fan but do respect that she had a large following and wish her well.I hope this will see Alex getting something out of this as well as Janice as they are the only people i listen to on R2 at present

Chris’ show is about “knocking through” this morning.. it’s dressed up as – some office on the 3rd floor that has been moved but I think there’s a bit of a Kirstie going there wrt the Dawn Patrol “space”… oh just knock through- we’ll make the show bigger- get another sofa in- and there’ll be room for the piano too, and most importantly, another hour or so to talk about the one show.

That's one. Have even three-hour slots from midnight to midday, assuming Chris is willing to get up an hour earlier and Ken doesn't mind the extra half hour. Since he's suggested it, I assume Chris is happy to follow Alex.

Janice 12-4, Alex 4-7

That's another. Four hours, five days a week is a long stint, though... Will the BTOTD show as we know and love it be changed or be compromised?.... 6am is back in the watershed, besides which news, travel and PFT take up a lot of time...

Janice 12-2, Alex 2-5, ???? 5-7

Sarah's 90/120 minutes have been directed at an audience which might be a bit older and more feminine in balance, (Show Tunes, more Andy Williams, less Robben Ford). Since they've been told not to forget that end of the scale, having already alienated most of them by the choice of Terry's replacement, might they wish to preserve that slot as a contrast with Alex and Chris?

Or they could just drop someone "competant" in the slot - Richard Allinson, Lynn Parsons (can she get out of the Smooth gig?)

Janice 12-2, Alex 2-5, Zoe Ball 5-7

Nightmare scenario.
