I have not listened to R2 in the early morning for a L O N G time.

It has changed my life, and I really miss music in the mornings. Having tried all other stations in the end last night I set alarm to R2 this morning.

Gosh I was surprised ....I dont like Madeley....BUT I have enjoyed all the music to-day......He has settled in.

How long will he be covering? I suspect as CE is taking up other TV type projects someone will be standing in a lot more often............lets hope ...then I can return Laughing

Your sense of humour shines through, Rachel! Smile

Listening to that silly Fiona Philips was a most amusing experience, though. In her analysis of the "news" in the papers, she talked about Gerry Rafferty like she'd actually heard of him. She mentioned "Baker Street" once, then she mentioned "Baker Street" again, and finally - before saying "Oh, and I didn't realise he was in Stealer's Wheel" - she managed to mention "Baker Street" a third time. I think she remembers "Baker Street". And the sax solo, which she also referred to.

Then she managed to squeeze in the fact that "of course, he was also in the Humblebums with Billy Connolly".

Yes, Fiona, of course he was. Not that you'd ever heard of The Humblebums before reading this morning's stories!

What a silly woman. Not only that, but Mr. Madeley didn't raise the standard much higher, either; "yes, alcoholism us a debilitating condition".

Er, yes, Richard. Of course. (To coin one of Ms. Philips' favourite phrases). And all this scintillating stuff on the BBC's biggest national radio network.

Is all hope lost?

RM has man-flu. He’s sounding quite sexy this morning, rough and husky, almost Neanderthal, he’s bringing out all my primal instincts. He has the sort of voice that will drag you up the stairs by the hair, throw you on the bed and then give you something to hang your towels on. Smile

And you'll be dressed in your "housework" outfit, no doubt?

Your Landscape Gardener is in for an interesting interview when he calls.

I do hope Judy's not reading this. All she has to look forward to today is selling books for W H Smith Laughing

Perhaps not, Colin. At my ladies that lunch meeting yesterday, I found myself reading the health section of the Daily Mail – I know: that’s a paradox but there you go. Anyway, in there, was a piece on smiling: apparently if you force yourself to smile even when you’re unhappy you will become a happy. We can extrapolate on that – if you force yourself to listen to Chris Evans you will enjoy Chris Evans. See! There is hope.

Actually the housework outfit is incredibly complicated and time consuming to get out of – whilst it has the planned effect it’s not very practical for executing the plan.

Jeans and T-shirt for the gardener I think, Ron, perhaps a cup of coffee.

That has also been me over Christmas / New year and it's still hanging around, so I can sympathise! I think I could have done a creditable performance of 'Wandrin Star' as done by Lee Marvin!! Shocked

I'll refrain from doing any painful extrapolating today, Rachel. Life's just too short, after all.

Tuned into Richard at Breakfast for the first time today- the last half hour. I was impressed & think he'd make a good breakfast dj.
Did anyone else try his numbers game he did when the vicar was there? I started off with 5 & at the end came up with 5, which he said should be what you get no matter what number you start out with
I can't recall the full process, but he said he'd repeat it tommorow

Funnily enough this week has been the first time that my wife has not complained about me having the radio on first thing in the morning, preferring RM to breakfast television. Perhaps I should have a towel handy Smile

RM seemed a little colder this morning, a little less, rarrrrrrgh, more the silent thoughtful type on the surface but you know he’s erupting on the inside. Still good though – I like moody men. Missed the numbers game- I had a long phone call from a girlfriend near Chester.

The numbers game is easy peasy. Summat to do with 'taking away the number you first thought of'....

Face towel or Bath towel? Laughing

I must admit, I wondered who it was on the radio the other morning as I occupied the bathroom ( the only time I hear Evans normally ) I didn't realise it was Madeley and thought "who ever it was" was pretty good! reasonable tones and not rushed as is the usual format..
I don't really like or dislike Richard Madeley normally but his ailment did seem to help! Laughing

RM is sounding quite normal this morning. Not a towel in sight. He's trying to cheer up this weekend with a Chicken, Daffodils and Party Hats. We've had weekends like that before.

I have to admit that I listened to Mr. Madeley for longer than usual this morning and, whilst he's still not my ideal choice of listening at that time of day, he's certainly preferable to The Gobby One. In fact, when you keep him away from that silly woman Fiona Philips (how on earth does she get away with being paid to waffle at length on matters about which she has zero understanding?) and their utterly pointless conversations about items in the "news", he's actually not bad at playing the DJ. But we really don't need that silly woman!

She’s a bit too left-wing and overly political on air for me but she’s nice enough otherwise. I’m not sure why she’s required on the breakfast show to pick out a few news items from the papers to talk about but she is and she does. It’s no biggy really- could be worse.

Chris Evans seems to be following in Sir Terry's footsteps in the amount of holiday he takes. Smile

The numbers game was...
- Think of a number
- Double it
- Add 10
- Divide by 2.
- Subtract the number you first thought of.

And the result is always 5. Those who were awake in Maths at school should be able to see why!

He's going to be asking for Fridays off soon, you just wait and see. I can feel it in me ageing bones, so I can. A leopard can't call a pot black.....

Well, I hope he does, anyhow. One down, 4 to go!!!

I think Chris Evans has made a tactical error in taking so much time away from R2 at this time of year. Ask any trick-cyclist and they’ll tell you that people don’t like change very much but when it comes, it takes only two-weeks on average, to get used to the new situation. Chris has been away since before Christmas (over 3-weeks). Richard M has been fantastic – it will seem a bit, oh that’s so last year when Chris comes back on Monday, maybe he’s just not that interested in Radio anymore.

Everyone is now used to getting up and driving to work to Richard M. 2011 started with Richard M –he was the new year new thing, that feeling that we all get on 1st Jan, this is going to be a good year, a new year, a new breakfast show- it’s all going really well for everyone and then- bang! On Monday, it’ll feel like we’ve been dragged back into last year. It will feel like the last 3-weeks has been a dream and we'll all want to go back gto sleep.

I must say that Richard has improved (or is it that I've merely adjusted?) over the last couple of weeks to the point where I can't be bothered to switch to something else - given that there isn't really anything else on FM. His style is definitely more tolerable than is Evans' and I don't reach for the "off" button as soon as he comes on air in the way that I always do with Insufferable Evans.

I also think you're right, Rachel; Evans really is "last year's thing". In fact, I'd say it's a "90s thing" personally!

Is he losing interest in radio? I certainly hope so.

He was asked to present Ch 4 'Famous and Fearless' which was straight after Christmas. Chris may have asked to present the breakfast show from BBC studios in Liverpool, but was declined. ( Just an idea ). He probarly broke off his holiday to present the Ch4 show. Everyone is entitled to a holiday.

He wasn't just "asked to present" the show - he was integral to the bid, which was probably accepted on condition that he fronted it. Channel 4 commissioning execs are obviously fools.

I don't think you really understand the pressures of live television, Mark. You can't do an intensive live show in the evening and then be in a studio to do live radio at a very early hour. That's madness, and although Evans seems like he takes on anything just to get his silly mug on the telly at every opportunity I don't think even he is daft enough to have contemplated such a silly idea!

mark occomore wrote:

He didn't just "break off" like it was something that just happened to crop up at the last minute. The live show would have been in the planning many months in advance.

Yep everyone is entitled to a holiday ( Most people get around 25 days per year plus bank holidays) but I'd call taking time off to work somewhere else a kick in the teeth to your main employer- then to expect "oh I'm entitled to a holiday" , holiday on top of that is just taking the mick.

I don't care how good he is, he's let Radio 2 down but more importantly he's let his listeners down. When you have the best job in broadcasting, you have to keep wanting to have it everyday like before you had it, otherwise someone else will and then they'll have it. So there!

Fameless and Frightful was the biggest mistake since Olaf the hairy, King of all the Vikings, ordered 80,000 battle helmets with the horns on the inside." ( Blackadder)

Months ago, I think in the days of the old Radio 2 Messageboards, I predicted that it would all end in tears

To coin a famous former advertising slogan from British Rail

'We're getting there'

It seems that even the ginger one's former fans are now turning against him
Well better late than never I suppose Smile

On the contrary, Rachel, I find that prospect delightful; I sincerely hope that he's inundated with "other" stuff for the forseeable future.

I presume this means that we (as licence payers) get a rebate from his astronomical fee? Wink

Not bothered if we don't; I'd pay good money to NOT have to listen to him!

As you probably guessed, I'm not a fan at all. I find the guy intensely annoying - and I think he's an appalling broadcaster, whether in vision or not. I really will be glad to see/hear the back of him. Surely that day can't be far off?

mark occomore wrote:

It's MUCH easier doing The One Show. All he would have to do is to turn up at the studio at White City about 2 hours before they went live, be briefed on what's what and who's guesting, and then after make-up get in front of the cameras and read Autocues. Once they're off air he can bugger off home and be done with it.

The live farce... sorry, "show".... in Liverpool was a much bigger affair and much more physically/mentally demanding.
