A Friday night episode of Johnnie Walker's Drivetime from, well not sure as yet but I've gleaned it was the night before the launch of the 5th Harry Potter book so far and that it's been pretty hot weatherwise.
Johnnie's on good form with Sally and business guy Martin Shankleman. Whatever happened to him. Mystery Voice on as I write.
I like a bit of mystery!

Google is your friend, Helen: http://hoa.org.uk/about-us/people/
I remember when Noel Edmunds was sitting in for Johnnie when he was off for his cancer treatment. Trying to be all matey with the regular crew, Edmunds implied that Shankleman was tight enough to avoid standing his round when the team went out for a post-broadcast drink. Shankleman got really angry with him, asking how he could possibly suggest such a thing given that they'd never been in the same pub together ever! He was clearly not happy, and it was clear that they weren't the best of friends from then on! |

I think this was just before Johnnie was going off for his treatment, had to stop disc to go out so will resume later. It was good to hear an all request Friday without somebody screaming down the phone already somewhat worse for wear.........
I do remember Edmonds not exactly endearing himself to the team!

Didn't Noel Edmonds make some sort of pitch for taking the show over permanently? I think from memory that the team were very protective of JW because of this and quite rightly so. _________________ Pirate Johnnie Walker played my request on 11 April 2009 |

Hi Angela
I think Noel Edmonds thought the show was his for the taking, but thank goodness someone saw through him. I remember when Johnnie returned he made a big thing of thanking Stuart Maconie but made hardly any mention at all of Edmonds' stint.
Really enjoyed the first hour or so of this 'mystery show' maybe I'll discover a bit more as it goes on. The news events didn't mean anything to me either!

Helen,
I couldn't date your show precisely, but Johnnie Walker began his sick leave some time in 2003 and ended it in early March 2004. I remember the latter date better as Johnnie had a chat room going that Friday before the doing the show and it was just prior to Mum & Dad's golden wedding anniversary (Sad that we lost mum before they had a chance to celebrate what would have been their diamond anniversary this year) You mention them talking about hot weather. There was a record breaking heatwave in August 2003: http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/climate/uk/interesting/aug03maxtemps.html
Hope this narrows things down a bit. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

Thanks LEE, I think it must have been June 2003 as they are talking about Stonehenge and the Solstice festival that particular weekend. I've not heard the end (I'm presuming I recorded the whole show!) as yet so maybe more will be revealed.
I vaguely remember that chat room, not sure if I managed to 'chat' on it!
H
Edit:- It was Johnnie's last show before he started cancer treatment and was expecting to be back in 6 weeks time. _________________ 88 - 91 FM this is Radio 2 from the BBC!

I have always loved this piece of music from Slaughter on Tenth Avenue but have never heard this version of it before by Mick Ronson

I think Eileen(?) likes this piece but don't know if she ever ventures in here. |

An old recording of Alan Titchmarsh (Aug 2010), featuring We Said We Wouldn't Look Back from Salad Days. Apparently the show first ran in 1954 so it will be its 60th anniversary this year.
He's now playing Charles Aznavour's She, oh how I miss the mix of Melodies For You.
I'm altering sleeves on a lined jacket, not a favourite occupation of mine, so it's spurring me on as I sew!

Me too, Helen . There is now no programme where we can hear such an eclectic mix from so many different genres. |

I was only thinking the other week,Helen, how much I miss Alan's programme.
I wish I had some recordings to play....but, I have thought (after seeing your post) of how to hear some of the music,I like, that he used to play. Go to his old page on the Radio 2 website ..look at the old, available playlists then pick what you want for your own playlist to play via Spotify!
(Hope the alteration went well!)

That's a great idea Becky! I think the Playlister is great, I'm saving a link to Richard Allinson's show for when he finishes as he often plays tracks I enjoy.
The jacket is finished, helped along by Alan's music I'm sure!

Listened to stuff by a band called The Meridian Brothers, they are from Columbia and according to write ups blend the modern with the traditional. Anyway the most important thing is I like them
Guaracha U.F.O (No Estamos Solos...)

An old mini disc compilation from Ed Stewart's Sunday show from 2000. I used to record the whole shows then edit them down and transfer (I had a walkman player as well as a recorder) to another disc.
Great listening to the tracks and can almost imagine Ed's comments on the various songs. I wish I'd left the odd comment in now instead of 'cleaning' them up!
I have a load of shows recorded digitally on the PC and with hindsight I'm going to leave a few of the presenters comments in for posterity.

Right now I'm listening to Grant McLennan. Ages since I've heard any of his songs. My son sent me a recording of his today which sent me off to Youtube to listen to more. Rain at Lords so Grant is fitting in nicely.
Such a talent, such a loss at just 48.

Currently listening to the mesmeric Hear My Voice by the equally mesmeric Celeste.
The song is from The Trial of the Chicago 7 (an excellent film) and is up for an Oscar in the Academy Award for Best Original Song category The film is up for best picture. I'm crossing fingers for both.

Currently listening to this groovy little ditty. I like a bit of World Music and this is clearly influenced by North Korea.
Our Government and it's leader, Boris Wrong Un, have kindly bequeathed this wonderful song to be sung in our schools, said their spokesman, Gavin Willy Am Son. Besides which, the sale of our blessed Union Jacks will soon rocket, making our country great again, not to mention rich - or at least the lucky person who got the tender so make millions of the little flags.
So...all together now.

I am reliably informed that this nostalgic ditty will be the B side when the single is released.
