I thought the same last night, when I saw Radio 1xtra being promoted on TV.
It got me thinking how can it be the case that the BBC's most popular radio station does not have such a sister station? (I don't see R6 as an alternative sister station) |

Surely it can't be that difficult to create a separate peak time schedule that can be available as an option at breakfast and drive time. Radio 1 manages, so does the World service and Radio 5. We have more than enough Dj's who are shoved into the less popular timeslots who would surely jump at the chance to be on air as a preferable alternative station to the current schedule. More happy listeners has to be good for the future of R2. |
Absolutely agree. I wait with bated breath to see who will take over Sarah's show as that will show the way the station is going. At the moment I listen to Lynn if I wake up early enough then dash to turn the radio over at 7am to Smooth. I must admit that I hate their adverts (especially the Fox one aarrgh) but if you choose your bathroom break time wisely you can miss them. This morning I only turned to R2 in time for popmaster.
As previously posted I would enjoy the Ken Bruce show more if the choice of music was improved. We have debated this many times on the other mb.
I can't stand the JV show. Do listen to SW - only criticism of this is the singing over records and never telling you what the tracks are. Find SM a bit boring but listenable. |

I agree with the sentiments of the postings in this thread. I used to listen to a lot more R2 a couple of years ago but now it gets less and less.. I didn't like Sarah Kennedy, Wogan was a bit stale for me. I do not like Chris Evans (drivetime or breakfast), I find Ken Bruce annoying, Jeremy Vine too patronising, Steve Wright is ok-ish. I do not like most of the stand in presenters either, they just are not professional enough or very music savvy.
I only regularly listen to Simon Mayo now who I think is fantastic. I enjoy his style and humour and I have learnt loads from his guests and the different slots he has and confessions is a must for me. The music is good too.
I listen to some of the specialised programmes and one offs plus R&M sometimes but for most of the day it's Classic FM or Radio 3 for me. _________________ Dharma Cat

I agree that Simon Mayo is a superb presenter
When Wogan retired he should have been given the breakfast show
I think then all the likely audience would have been happy rather than the present situation where a majority of listeners feel alienated |

Its strange that only Steve Wright seems to be the acceptable face of daytime radio on this thread (just), he seems to get a rough ride elsewhere.
Like him or loathe him, the guy is one of the last pro's.
I also agree that Simon Mayo is a good presenter, I just think that 5Live is a better home for him.
I would like to have seen one of the ex R1 djs lost in the shake up of 1993 on drivetime, DLT, Simon Bates, Kid Jenson to name a few. |

I'd love to see DLT back on Radio 2
At least we would get some good competitions and interesting music hopefully slightly away from the standard playlist stuff
I heard he was broadcasting on some station in Lincolnshire but the BBC should make its peace with him and get him back where he belongs |

Personally, I think thats why BBC music radio is in such a poor state right now, in 1993 when Matthew Bannister was tasked with sorting R1, it should of been a natural progression for the presenters to move on to R2. |

I blame Lesley Douglas for the current '"rot" Her decision to remove Johnny Walker from Drivetime, when the show was popular and enjoyable, had a really good format and Johnny wanted to stay (his autobiography refers ). Her changes have killed Radio 2 in my opinion. Bringing in Ross, Brand and Evans and Ball have totally changed the whole remit of the station. There are a lot of people who like their style of presentation but they should have been "used" in Radio 6 not Radio 2. Why the hell did she change what was (not for me now ) the most popular Radio station. Lesley was at her dumb down best when she moved Chris from evenings to mornings. I despair. If they are going to make changes why not use Radio 6 as the trial station . Leave Radio 2 alone and give Walker and Allinson back their old show (and give Sarah Kennedy a well deserved show at a time to suit her). |

Couldn't agree with you more Oldgreymare. The rot set in when she took over as far as I'm concerned.

Remember how heated things got on the old R2MB forum when it was announced that Evans was coming to R2 to do Drivetime?
At the time, I remember thinking "That's it, the game's up. She's blown it."
And she did! And Shennan is continuing with the demolition job very capably. |

Yes! I ended up on Feedback having accused the Beeb of censorship after they remove my thread opening post announcing he'd got Drivetime! Media guardian picked up on it as did the Mail................. They said there was no censorship so couldn't do anything else but restore the post.

I remember it well, Helen. You were definitely Star Of The Day! That was a real poke in the eye for the idiots who were running the MBs at the time - I'm amazed that they thought that they could get away with such an authoritarian approach.
Oh, on second thoughts........... |

I was in happy ignorance of all this, at the time of the 'Evans" reincarnation, i just noticed that Richard disappeared on Saturdays and then the "favoured one's" assisted move to drivetime after the forced replacement of Johnny Walker! Then I read Johnny Walker's autobiography and all became clear.
A must read by the way ..... it sets out in black and white what actually did happen about Ms Douglas and her favouritism. |

Whilst I agree with everything which has been said I think the problem goes back further than Lesley Douglas
As has been rightly pointed out when the likes of DLT left Radio 1 they should have had a natural home on Radio 2 but the controller at the time Frances Line refused to entertain this prefering to stick with out of date shows and presenters who were about as exciting as a damp sponge
This state of affairs meant that people like me who could not stick the changes to Radio 1 had nowhere to go and simply became very angry and grumpy a state which I have never really recovered from
Jim Moir as controller did his best to salvage the situation but it was very much a case of shutting the stable door after the horse had bolted
Since he left it has been downhill all the way as I think almost everyone agrees |

I see the current situation as no different to what happened to R1. Now the ones that came into R1 then are now moving to R2, and keeping the same styles, and alienating listeners like me.
As for R2 daytimes there's only Ken B worth switching on for at present
Thank goodness they haven't destroyed R2 after 7pm and on Sundays yet |

That quote applies to me, after '93 I hated what R1 had become, and it took a good seven years in the radio wilderness of dodgy local commercial stations, before I found R2 was beginning to offer what I wanted to listen to.
We have Jim Moir to thank for that, but it has been downhill since then. As a baby boomer/generation x, I'm disgusted with the BBC for the radio that it is offering us.
I've had this bee in my bonnet since 1993! re the quality presenters lost to the BBC. Would love to hear Adrian Juste on a Saturday afternoon again! |

Just to digress for a moment...
I interviewed Adrian Juste for a radio magazine years ago at the time that he was still doing his Radio One show on Saturdays. I was amazed at just how much work he put into his show - he'd spend the first three days of the week in the BBC sound library researching clips that might come in useful, then the next two days recording additional snippets and links to stitch the lot together. Not content with that, he then went into the studio on the Saturday morning with a load of tapes and cued them in live! I'd assumed that the show was pre-recorded and edited, but no.
He told me that he started with a clean slate each Monday morning and didn't have a clue what the next show would contain. Obviously he had some input from his Producer, who helped with research and source materials, but he nearly all of it himself.
It came as no surprise that he was hugely influenced by Kenny Everett, who pioneered this style of production back in his BigL pirate radio days and then on Radio One.
Anyway, back to the thread..... |

Adrian's shows were terrific, just great fun all the way through... in fact I'm going to say he was better than Kenny! My favourites were the New Year's Eve shows, a few of which I have on tape as I've mentioned before.
I'd love to hear him back on 2... _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Yes I think Adrian was probably the funniest person ever on Radio 1 and I've watched documentaries about him and he talks a lot of sense
I'd much prefer him to be doing the comedy stuff on Radio 2 rather than some of the mediocre people we have now who pass for comedians |

Yes, me for starters! Doubtless I won't be the last..........
Any schedule that contains the names "Chris" and "Evans" in combination is a non-starter, I'm afraid. |

Who do you rekon would be good on the Brekky show?
I note that most radio stations opt for loud & obnoxious breakfast show hosts. Even the normally mellow Magic has the over animated Nei Fox as their Breakfast DJ making it unlistenable,.
For myself, i would be quite happy to hear Sarah Kennedy in the 7:30 to 9:3o slot. I like her style. I havn't heard her rediculous comments as I was generally very dozy when she was on. But at a slightly more civilised hour I'm sure she'd be able to reign herself in. the Show Time tune would then be at a civilised time of day |

I've always enjoyed it when Johnnie Walker was Wogan's stand-in, so he'd be good enough for me.
It will be interesting to see (hear?) how Richard Madelely copes in the chair. I'm not a particular fan but anything's better than Evans! |

Talk about out of the frying pan into the fire
After January Lynn Parsons should be given the breakfast show or if not either Johnnie Walker or Ken Bruce or even Simon Mayo |
