The unpopular M4 bus lane which was named Blair lane after the former PM Tony Blair is going to be scrapped by the government. The bus lane was former transport secretary and deputy PM John Prescott idea which was introduced in 1999.

I believe it's going to be suspended until the time of the London Olympics and then scrapped after that
I wish some of the many bus and taxi lanes in Chester could meet the same fate
They are a waste of road space |

It's not really being scrapped, it's having the busses and taxis only restriction lifted, so that any vehicle can use it. It's not like they're going to brick it up and plant trees on it. |

Getting rid of bus lanes is nutty.
Otherwise you have busloads of people stuck in traffic forever going nowhere.
The bus lanes for the exclusive use of busses and Taxis is very sensible. It helps keep London moving
Of course this nutty government is ideologicly opposed to public transport & this is their first step to rid london of busses |

Sorry Clive but I have to disagree
Why should people who choose to travel by bus or taxi think they should have priority over everyone else?
I'm all in favour of people using public transport but I was under the impression there was already a congestion charge applied in London to give people an incentive
If people choose to pay the charge they should be in the same position as everyone else
No better no worse
Bus lanes are a total waste of road space and if they are abolished traffic queues will reduce |

There's a slight difference in having a bus lane in the centre of a town to having one on a motorway Clive. To me it sounded bonkers in the first place as Sir Terry Wogan regularly commented upon.

The reason they get priority is that there is no influence to get people out of their cars onto public transport if they are sat in queues. They are not a waste of space IF they are thought out properly _________________ You will hear gospel and rhythm and blues and jazz, all those are just labels, we know that music is music. |

I must admit I am not familiar with that one. i just hope that this will not be the prelude to getting rod of other bus lanes in our cities |

Clive,
What are you not familiar with? The M4 motorway doesn't run through a city.

Clive in another posting I noticed you said you were not a driver
I think if you were you might well take a different view
It's completely mad to have a bus lane on a motorway anyway |

I would have thought on a Motorway it would make good sense to have a seperate bus lane. The busses would not be hgurtling along at 70mph. They would only get in the way of other vehicles in other lines |

Clive I simply don't understand your point
At present we have a whole lane solely devoted to a few buses whereas if it was not a bus lane both buses and other slow moving vehicles could use it
At present lorries clog up the second lane simply because they are not allowed to use the bus lane even if it is totally empty and this adds to road congestion and slows faster traffic down
I've been driving for almost 40 years and believe me most bus lanes add to congestion as they take out valuable road space |

Just how many buses do you expect to see on a motorway?
As for hurtling along they have lower speed limits than cars as most drivers would be aware of.

Quite a lot on that stretch of the M4 heading eastwards, as it happens. |

Worse, in my experience! As Wogan used to call it, the "M4 Car Park" during the morning and evening commuter rush.

Yes, it's public transport only from Marble Arch right down to Tottenham Court Road now. So, lots of buses and taxis. |
