Much enjoyed the long-forgotten Miss Pinkerton record by Cuppa T. A bit sadistic to play Marianne Faithfull's Summer Nights on a January day--otherwise all fine. But still nothing definite re Brian Matthew.

I really must try to listen to SOTS whilst it's on!
I normally hear the first 20 minutes or so and record the rest to hear each morning as I'm having a wash & brush up.
I did catch the Miss Pinkerton track, never heard it before, it was good but "Whatcha Gonna Do About It" from the Small Faces made my morning!.
Johnnie excellent as usual...

Heatwave made mine as well SantaFe in that 3 in a row. Loved the 2 in a row from the Righteous Bros as well with Johnnie adding his tuppence worth in the middle.
I missed the first 45 mins but listened again, worth it IMO.

Listened for about 3/4 of an hour this morning, also perked me up to hear the Faces and Spencer Davies Group, I really rate Steve Winwood all the way to Blind Faith Exclamation SOTS is very therapeutic, I am listening to it all now on listen again Very Happy

I agree with that BB, 100%, SOTS is therapeutic. Makes you feel good to listen to it. What a great decade that was, in music terms at least.
Gimmi Some Lovin is one of my favourites too, louder the better.
I thought it was so... well, heavy? maybe even groovy at the time! Cool loved the repetitive bass line and the organ sound is fantastic.
Luckily, I can fire up my mini disc tomorrow morning and hear it again! Very Happy

Isn't SOTs somtimes pre-recorded? It depends on the shift patterns of the producers. Then it can be live on Saturdays. Similar to SLS which is sometimes live and pre-recorded

Does it really matter if it gives you that "feel good" factor that Johnie's presentation normally does, for me anyway.

Why are Radio 2 being so secretive regarding Brian Matthew?

I suppose they have to be. Apart from being a private issue, they can't realistically give out statements as to his health.
If it's a serious situation, and I don't know what Brian's problems have been, it can change from week to week.
It's a case of wait and see.
I hope he returns in good health, as much as I enjoy Johnnie doing the show, Brian's the man for the job!.

I'd like to see a 3 in a row feature with a different label each week.
Singles which never charted.
3 on the Decca label one week then 3 on Parlophone or 3 on Brunswick etc.
They have all these in the library and i bet the vast majority have never even been played or even taken out of their cardboard sleeves for over 40 years.

I'd like them to play "Follow Me" by Cilla Black, in this centenary year of Scouting. I know it was on an LP she recorded between 67 & 69, but I cannot find it on anything listed, can anybody out there help me, pretty please Question

Lots of good ideas here. There was talk of having a feature on records which didn't do as well as expected but it didn't seem to develop from there. Worth a try?

Examples:
Hollies: If I Needed Someone
Kinks: Wonderboy
Tom Jones: Once upon a Time
Tremeloes: Be Mine

Etc, etc, etc. Over to you.

It was on third LP "Sher-oo!". EMI have issued the first two on one CD in their "2 on 1" series so, you never know, they may do the same with that and fourth one "Surround Yourself With Cilla" one day, but don't hold your breath. In the meantime they've neglected to include the track on any of the numerous compilations of her work. You may have to resort to eBay or record fairs.

Hear Hear! And what a cracking show it was this morning, just about the perfect mix of music types and rarities amongst the well known.

Interesting to hear the stereo version of The Beatles' "Run For Your Life", with its exaggerated separation. Reinforces my opinion that, good as the new Love album is, I wish they had done a proper remastering job of the individual albums first, with Rubber Soul and the White Album at the top of the list!

Not quite. He was born on 17.9.28, so he's 78.

Excellent news re his prospective return to SOTS. He's been a huge miss.

But all credit to Johnnie Walker who's handled the situation in a gracious and generous manner. We SOTS fans owe him much for this.

Yes good news about Brian.

I've really enjoyed Johnnie doing the show though, and he sounds like he's enjoying it too.

Johnnie even slipped in a couple of his old Drivetime show jingles in today's SOTS, One of them was the Terry Wogan laugh (the one where 'Pauly' can be heard in the background) The other was the one where a soldier 'from artillery' wants the DJ to 'play it loud', it sounds like something out of the film Good Morning Vietnam.
Hearing those again made me smile.

Yes, it was from Good Morning Vietnam.

I think JW's settled into the show more and more each week, and the trailers this morning plus the "non cued" track made for a more relaxed show.
I wish JW could do something like this elsewhere on the station. His Sunday shows ok but he excels at being light hearted mixed with a little fooling around.

I think that Johnnie is very relaxed and at home doing SOTS, his presentation is more laid back than Brian's, not less professional, just doing it his own way. I will be very pleased when Brian returns to SOTS, which I also hope is soon, however, if and when Brian decides to hang up his earphones, IMHO, Johnnie would be a natural to take on SOTS.

Couldn't agree more SantaFe! It's starting to sound more like Saturday Drivetime every week.

Just heard him read out an email about the forthcoming James Taylor tour and a request for James Taylor to appear on the Sunday show with Johnnie while he is over. The listener said that maybe they'd have to get Boazman along as she was crazy about James Taylor (I remember her swooning when he was on Drivetime!). To hear the pair of them together again would be great.

Yes I heard him say that yesterday me Lord, I hope it is true and also agree with Santa and Helen about how it would be great to have Johnnie re-united with Sally in a Saturday style Drivetime show. I will put it on my wish list.

Must say Johnnie's on cracking form at the moment, his Sunday show now sounds like his old Saturday Sequence on R1

You ain't that much of a numpty are you general Question I just think that Johnnie's style of presentation is just what R2 needs, can't be doing with the Wossies, Evans, O'Learys & Brands brought in to turn R2 into a R1.

Does anyone else remember when Johnnie Walker had the afternoon Saturday show on R2 (the slot that Janice Long & latterly Richard Allinson were to take on) when he first joined R2? It ended with his enforced absence. At the time Johnnie only did Drivetime on Monday-Thursday while Des Lynam did it on Friday. Whilst Johnnie got Drivetime back on his return to R2, this time the full Monday-Friday, he never returned to Saturday afternoons.

Well, I feel like a numpty cos I can't 'dig' all these trendy presenters that everyone tells me are great! Always liked Johnnie and Bob. Makes me laugh if you view the web cam on sat night, half way through the 11pm news the view switches from bland to Bob and you can see him sat there listerning in utter disdain to the tripe that leads up to the news! And he never says thanks Russell even though both shows are live!

Bob has made several comments in recent weeks to the effect of "lets stop wittering and get on with the music" once he opens his show.... good for him. Very Happy
