That Monday Morning feeling came back with a vengeance this morning with the return of Sarah Kennedy to the Dawn Patrol; as if it isn't bad enough that we've all been back at work a full two weeks, yet it's still only January the 15th. That veritable cornucopia of doom, gloom and depression; talking all the while, over all the records, about all the stuff the other Presenters left on the cutting room floor two weeks ago, came back to remind us: Confused

Cheer it up a bit Sarah.

I only heard the first few minutes this morning and was a little annoyed that she started to talk twice over the intro to the first track she played, after announcing that she'd "spread the gossip from the holiday over the rest of the week". Other than that, however, I didn't hear enough to comment further.

Oh it's just about bearable Mike, when faced with GMTV as an alternative, it was just such a stark contrast from the upbeat Dawn Patrol Programmes over recent weeks with Aled and Alex before him, leaving the listeners... well this one anyway, wanting the stand-ins back. Not exactly a triumphant return.

Dead air would be preferable to "Get Me The Valium" anyday. How that programme survives, I have no idea.

She can be ok when she leaves off moaning about her ailments and doesnt indulge us with some of her weird views on politics and/or the state of society as illustrated by her own personal dealings.

Of course to achieve that would require preparation, planning & some production: none of which I can see Kennedy being willing to put in.

So the show rambles on as inconsistent as ever vering from the quirky and charming to the harsh and shrill. Sometimes you will hear a smooth and effortless presentation, other days it is shambolic. You just never know what you are going to get.

All of which begs the question: does she have a producer & what does he do except pick the music?

Disagree with all of you! I was glad to hear Sarah again, I enjoy her wafflings and even though she falls over her words now and again, she is infinitely preferable to her stand-ins! Nothing against Aled, but he's not my morning cup of tea.

Sarah finishes at 7.30am and gets out of broadcasting house so quick not even Wogan can see her. Preperation? Sarah dosn't do that she leaves it upto the production crew. Sarah is an icon to national broadcasting. She has some hold over the BBC, like Wogan and Wrighty do

Mark, I bet Sarah can spell!!

Or is "ikon" something held in high esteem in a Swedish furniture store?

I suppose she is a sop to the WI/ Daily Mail readers of a cetain age who also pay their licence fee. But lately even some of them are upset by the shoddy & inconsistent delivery of their "icon".

Did she thank Aled for standing in? I notice she doesnt thank Alex when she starts her show, unlike Terry who always has a little word of thanks for the preceeding presenter.

I don't know if she thanked Aled, I only hear the last half an hour and that's not paying full attention (early morning fuzz!).
I'm sure she did thank him Smile

I heard the trailer for Dawn Patrol during Ken's show, and it really does her no favours at all. In fact, I'm sure it's taking the piss.

At least one can bear to hear the whole trailer, unlike the Evans version!!

Sarah is most welcome back, I hope it's a very long time until her next holiday.

I'd prefer her next holiday to be a very long time...

I don't care much for any of the trailers....... they're not really needed.... and just fill space that would otherwise, have something entertaining in it.

Erm, what exactly is wrong with reading Obits? Many of them are very interesting - I don't think it in any way implies that a person is a pessimist.
I find this a very strange argument, though I long ago ceased to be surprised by the lengths folk will go to to criticise Sarararah!

I think she is quite a gloomy presenter overall. She comes across as not really wanting to be there, every word seems like it's a real effort. Focuses her shows on gloomy weather, death, destruction, the traffic chaos between her home and the BBC, and her inability to use anything technical. She does attempt to lighten the mood with the odd childlike mispronunciation of everyday words and reads out the odd interesting e-mail/letter but that hardly scratches the surface of the systemic gloom that is the backbone of her show.

I did have to laugh at her recent reference to someone water-skiing down Tewkesbury High Street, although her first reference of the year to sprouts this morning was uncalled for! Smile Mind you, she played Lene Marlin's "Sitting Down Here" first of all, so I'm inclined to forgive her.

She never mentions Lester and he never mentions her for some reason.. handbags at 10 paces ? They always used to have a bit of a handover banter a few years ago but not now. Lester mentioned Jonesy was on next when she was on holiday and yes I do recall her thanking him for minding the shop for her.

As Sarah says, reading obituaries after the event is hardly pessimistic or ghoulish, it's what one does Rolling Eyes Sometimes you only find out the full achievements of someone after they have died.

If anyone is ghoulish then it's the newspaper editors who have a file of obits written waiting for people to die Smile but they feel it necessary in order to give an efficient service to their readers - who WANT to read them in good time.

About a year ago when an elderly once-prominent British musician Billy Amstell died no obit appeared anywhere. I asked a colleague-writer to do one and The Independent agreed to print it and save it on their website, it's still there.

http://news.independent.co.uk/people/obituaries/article338200.ece

Before then I had no idea Billy had contributed such a lot to the BBC Light Programme and had worked with David Jacobs.

I'm not saying there is anyhting wrong with reading the obits, it just sounded very funny when she said it as she's not generally known for being cheery is she.

I think Rachel's "analysis" is far from spot-on. On the contrary, I don't find Sarah's show in the least bit gloomy. If I felt as Rachel does, I wouldn't listen - so why does she???

It gets me as far as the Humber bridge in a morningso I'm not particularly bothered, altough I am tempted to write and ask for 'Sirius' by the Alan Parsons Project as a showtune. ( it was in the re-make of Flubber with Robin Williams)

MIS

I listen to R2 from 05:20 through to 19:00 most days (Mon-Fri), with short breaks for lunch or if I have to go to a meeting at work. After several years of doing that; I'm ( I think anyway) in a good position to comment on the content of any day-time Radio 2 show*. It's just my opinion of course but what prompted this thread was not how bad Sarah Kennedy is, as stand alone analysis of her show, but how poor she is in comparison to the two presenters who covered the show over the last three weeks. Normally a show's quality drops off a little when the regular presenter is away. Monday's show this week was appallingly ill-prepared and just plain gloomy, when compared to the stand-ins. That stark step-change in pace and mood brought home to me why so many others find her show, a barren**, featureless, non entity, squashed awkwardly between two fantastic shows. I'd like her to up her game a gear or two, and do a talk show on Sunday Morning- she'd be good at that.

* Not Jeremy Vine - as I listen again to the first two hours of Alex Lester at that time.

** use of incorrect word corrected. Thanks MIS Smile

Who is the baron, Rachel - did you mean barren?!!

I completely disagree with you, and I still wonder why you listen to Sarah when you obviously dislike the show so much.

And why on earth do you listen to Alex Lester TWICE? On seconds thoughts, I know why Exclamation

I don't dislike the show or the presenter, I dislike the gloomy presentation of the show. Sarah can do much better. The music, the travel news and the other news are all good. That is why I listen.

That is what's so sad about how low her show has sank. She can do much better. Her shows in previous years were many times better. Has she sank in to the Steve Wright complacancy mode of turing up and broadcasting on auto pilot. She should either take a break and come back refreshed or make a change if she finds herself completely bored with what she is doing now. Anything else is dishonest both to herself and listeners.

I regard her as a daft aunt, too - one that I tune out most of the time and listen to only the odd word, phrase or sentence. Whilst the music stays reasonably good, though, I'll not instinctively reach for the 'off' button as I'm getting ready for work in the morning (or whilst I'm driving to some hill or suchlike on my days off!), but as gfloyd has commented, I'm also convinced that her present output is below par compared to what I remember from a few years ago.
