Helen, I have to respond to complaints here, and if I agree with them then I'll take some sort of action.

I'm not removing messages, not suspended anybody, just trying to improve the threads on the forum. Freedom of speech exists, but there are rules, and Rule 2 just requires a bit of decorum and reasonable behaviour on here.

Vanessa fans have made their new thread, Poor Old Colin even tuned in to Vanessa this morning Razz

If we were to describe the event in audio engineering terms we could call it a mere "transient peak"! Never again...............

It's always a difficult call John when you get complaints you have my sympathies, your dammed if you do and dammed if you don't Smile at the end of the day I take my hat off to you because this is the only forum thanks to you that has survived the test of time since they closed the boards the first time around.

Having said that flow is a factor, the thread was started in good faith and just carried on after the event so to speak, so not really sure what people are complaining about not something I could really be bothered to get worked up about as no one was offensive etc etc. it would have probably fizzled out anyway. On the other hand I can never see the point of repeating one's view when everyone knows what it is in the first place. Hence the reason I don't frequent the message boards that much these days, if there is something that is different or new then I will contribute to it. Life really is too short to get too worked up about such things as posting a thread in the wrong forum.

This is a good forum and you do a good job running it, so people will just have to run with that and respect it. Very Happy

Is she any good?

She's just, er, Vanessa Feltz really. Nothing special at all. In fact it sounds like average quality local radio. And heaven knows there's enough average-quality local radio-style output on Radio 2 lately.

There are plenty of much better alternatives to Radio 2 in the mornings.

No Helen, pay attention at the back there, nowhere is it frowned upon to say you don't think Vanessa is any good; previous messages on this thread have suggested it'll only be frowned upon to post on Vanessa's OTHER newer thread if you don't listen to her show. Rolling Eyes

It really pees me off when folk comment on something simple and get it wrong Razz

OK Helen, but refering to your previous posting on this page, nowhere is it frowned upon to say you don't think Vanessa is any good and it is only frowned upon to post on Vanessa's OTHER newer thread if you don't listen to her show.

Luckily, I rarely don't rise until 7.00am, and have no need to listen to La Feltz.

However I fail to understand why the BBC have selected her as a replacement to Sarah Kennedy, when so many more suitable broadcasters are available.

It just confirms to me that the opinion that I have been forming of the BBC over the last couple of years to be correct ie that it is seeking to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

kengeo, I do agree,

The licence remit requires that R2 have a high audience 'reach' and that would I suppose include 'appeal to the lowest common denominator'. In days gone by they did that by the excellent quality of programme content.

Current controllers are lazy and have sought to appeal to the lowest common denominator by employing popular voices/faces and then the quality of the programme seems less of a priority?

Until recently I was a staunch defender of the BBC, my parents rarely allowing me to watch ITV (Blue Peter over Magpie etc), they rightly felt that the BBC would inform educate and entertain me.

Now I feel let down by the BBC, quality TV and radio programmes are few and far between, the bulk again appealing to the 'lowest common denominator' The current Saturday evening TV output is a classic example, quality? pah!

Even their informative and educational programmes now have questionable political and idealogical angles.

Peter Sissons recent articles in the Mail give a good insight into todays BBC.

Not sure John. Confused It was because of what was said on this thread that caused your complaints it would seem? At least that was the way I read it hence my post yesterday.

Well you lead us to believe you'd had complaints about what had been said on this thread. The other one didn't start until after you'd posted your comments on this one. I got the feeling anti Vanessa comments were not welcome. Maybe I got it wrong............

I only listen to the first 45 minutes but to me it doesn't sound a whole lot different to Sarah Kennedy's old show or the Parson's stopgap fillers since.
Play a few tunes, read the newspaper headlines, pick out an odd quirky story, all pretty harmless disposable fodder, although I do object to being patronised as a "lovely listener" at 5am. Rolling Eyes

As Colin says it's very much average quality local radio standard.

A better option would be to start Alex an hour later and ask him to do an extra half hour.

H,

The threads are still here, you could have read them again instead of all this.

I suggested a new thread (and Mark started it) for folks who listen to Vanessa, where they can say if they like Vanessa or not, and have a good discussion because they've all listened to her show.

THIS thread is for anyone to post on, whether they listen to her or not.

Nowhere on this forum is it frowned upon to say you don't think Vanessa is any good. Agreed?

H,

The problem was I'd had complaints about disrupted discussions caused by non-listeners, so I suggested a new thread. Sorted as far I can see.

But if you want to complain at the complainers (rather than me) this is the thread to do it.

Hi there,

I've been browsing this forum for sometime now and I thought I would take the plunge and join in the discussions.

I think the criticisms posted about Vanessa Feltz are very unfair. I think she is an asset to Radio 2, and she has years of radio experience. I like her relaxed, calm presentation and light banter.

People complained about Sarah Kennedy for years and years and often called for her removal. Now she's gone, people are still complaining. Perhaps people should be careful what they wish for, though I have no issue with Vanessa Feltz. I also look forward to hearing her deputise for Jeremy Vine.

Long may Vanessa Feltz continue.

If Jeremy Vine decides to call it a day then Vanessa Feltz will be the perfect successor. It would make a pleasure to hear a female voice during the daytime. Vanessa hosts an award-winning phone-in show on BBC London. Her experience in this field makes her the perfect stand-in - and potential successor - for Jeremy Vine.

As I said before I've actually met her so I think I am in a far better position to comment than most other people here

She is a complete self centred bitch

Do you seriously believe that presenters are really like what you hear on radio?

With most of them it's an act once they get to where they want to be

There are a few exceptions and in that regard I would single out Ken Bruce and Lynn Parsons

She's not highly regarded in broadcasting circles, that's for sure. I can see why.

And her early-morning R2 show is awful! What a patronising woman!

I rememebr watching Celebrity Wife Swap about four years ago. Feltz and her partner Ben swapped with Paul Daniels and Debbie McGee. Feltz was treated like crap by Daniels, who took an instant disliking to her. Feltz, on the other hand, came across as a really nice person.

If she was as bad as people like to make out then perhaps she would have been the horrible one on the programme. Paul Daniels is a cantankerous old cretin.

It can probably be explained by the fact that Feltz obviously knows how to play to the camera, whereas Daniels never could unless he was fronting his own network TV show.

Feltz was close to tears because Daniels was absolutely horrible to her. No matter what she did it was never good enough. Daniels couldn't help himself.

Only last week I was talking to a camera man who had just completed a documentary with Paul Daniels

He said he was a very nice person who had been consistently misrepresented by the press and his wife was also very pleasant and suypportive

I know the person concerned well and I for one believe him

My wife and I went to Paul and Debbie's wedding reception many years ago in Beaconsfield, Bucks. You're right - they're both very nice people. Debbie, in particular, is lovely.

If that's the case, why was he such a tosser to Vanessa Feltz? No "nice person" would treat anyone the way Daniels treated Feltz. From the outset he was absolutely vile towards her.
