Our friend Andy Walmsley posted this on DS,
According to the Guardian Radio 2 "will attempt the impossible on Christmas Day with a new Kenny Everett show 15 years after his death.
Kenny Everett's Christmas Selection Box will feature archive clips of Everett's jingles, "fiddly bits" and comedy characters including Captain Kremmen, Chris P Bacon and Rock Salmon, interspersed with classic and current chart hits".
There's also a documentary on Christmas Eve

I may even give it a go.
He was one of thsoe comedians who I wasn't sure if he'd dated well or not, and a few years ago I caught an old episode of Blankety Blank with TW, I was in tears a truly funny man.

He did Radio 1 a few times - and got banned twice, I think (the first for his infamous remark you refer to above).
Let's not forget that it was Everett and Blackburn who jumped ship from BigL Radio London just before it closed in order to act as advisors to the BBC on how the new BBC pop station should be set up and run. That's partly why many of the jingles sounded the same (they used the same base tracks by PAMS in Dallas) and also why, for the first time ever at the BBC, the "DJs" operated self-op studio consoles. Blackburn and Everett sat down with engineers and said "this is what we want the studio to be".
So Kenny Everett was in there right at the beginning. A bit of a loose cannon, as it turned out, but most influential in shaping British radio as we have come to know it. |

I'm pretty sure he had a regular show.. I also think he did a couple of shows for Radio2.. I have a tape somewhere..

They still play them on KYA SanFrancisco.. exactly the same!

That was his stint on Saturday mornings. He said it after the ten o'clock news. His removal allowed a (relatively) young Noel Edmonds to get his first regular show on the BBC.
I'm not sure this thing at Christmas is a terribly good idea, but we shall see. It sounds like a variation of those duets, like Natalie Cole with her late father.
Kenny was fine at the time, but very much of his time.

That's what I meant - sorry. He had a few lengthy stints at the station. I do believe he did a couple of R2 slots as well - but that was either in the late 80s or early 90s. |

I've watched some bits of Cuddly Ken on Youtube recently. It doesn't date as badly as you might think.
One thing's for certain, as a DJ Kenny Everett was a pioneer, and a class act. He'd be spinning in his grave if he saw some of the tripe that passes as entertainment on both radio and TV today. |

I thought his original TV show ("The Kenny Everett Video Show") for Thames (recorded in a smallish studio with only the studio crew to provide off-camera laughter) was much better than his BBC follow-up ("The Kenny Everett Television Show"), complete with audience. The format was already beginning to tire.
This was the case with his Capital breakfast segment in Mike Smith's show. By this time, Kenny was producing his Captain Kremmen serial at home and his commitment was diminishing rapidly. I remember Mike Smith on air one day (after playing out the segment that last only a couple of minutes) saying "Is this crap costing the station money?". Ooops. |

Mike Smith was the crap costing the station money..
I must have watched all of Kenny's shows on TV but I really can't remember what show was on what station..
I loved the Bee Gee's sketch.. "Massive Chew Sets" and of course the side splitting Rod Stewart bit!  I really laughed at that the first time around..
What Channel was "Best possible taste" on I wonder?
But there were also comical TV adverts Kenny featured, including a classic Australian ad for "Buck Off Bill".. a wine and beer outlet with a completely hilarious shouty character reeling off the store's bargains... a lengthy list of wines was bellowed out followed by "and... there's a Buck Off"

Looking back this is not the first time that Radio 2 have had a Christmas Day tribute to Kenny. Back in 1996 Noel Edmonds presented 'Christmas Foreverett" again produced by Kevin Howlett.
This Christmas Day also look out for 'Happy Birthday Maurice Cole' on BBC Radio 7 at 9am. |

I liked the Thames shows best, for the Cosgrove & Hall animated Captain Kremmen episodes!
Re: the old jingles. Tomas Bodin's 'Pin Up Guru' album uses the 'Remember this golden classic...' jingle before Harlem Heat starts properly!

Santa Fe fan, I've looked up the Buck Off Bill ad on You Tube! Australians can get away with that sort of thing - were those the techies on the Kenny Everett TV show laughing?

| I heard the last hour of Kenny eerett this evening. Superb stuff. I will catch up with it on Listen again. Currently listening to the superb documentary on the London Palladium. Excelent. this is what radio 2 does best |

I would think so Avid.. from my memory of the show, there was always a small group clapping or laughing.. bit like Steve Wright's show!
I was rattling my brain after reading your question as to what show it was where there was just one person clapping as the end titles rolled up?? I can't think of it...

I wonder how many people would have enjoyed two programmes reminiscing about Mike Smith's "glorious" career at R1?
All I can remember about the bloke was that he married Sarah Greene, crashed his helicopter and was called "Smutty" occasionally by Noel Edmonds....

I was never a Kenny Everett fan in the past but I listened to most of the show yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it
As I said to my son it reminded me of a cross between the Goons and Adrian Juste in the 80s but of course he had never heard either of them
I don't know whether Kenny's humour was just too far ahead of its time for me the first time round or whether the current Radio 2 output is mainly so dire that it makes Kenny look absolutely brilliant compared to some of the so called comic dross we have today but either way I enjoyed the show very much and I never thought I would ever say that
Well done to all concerned

Couldn't agree more; I also think Ken would have thoroughly approved of the "guesstimations" as to what modern stuff he'd have enjoyed.
Wonderful show; the only downside is that it's reminded me of what a superbly unique, innovative broadcaster and entertainer Kenny Everett was, and the fact that no-one else has ever come close to filling the gap left by his passing. |

Yes, I do agree. I was listening to a recording of a "Kenny & Cash" show (Kenny with Dave Cash) on BigL Radio London in early 1967 and he was so inventive.
What's particularly interesting is that Everett was able to create really complex sound montages back in the day when he was recording onto 1/4" tape and having to splice tapes, lay off segments to another machine, mix them back with other recordings, etc etc in order to build up layers. You really did need a good technical understanding - and patience - to do this with such technology. Engineers at BBC Radio were in awe of what he achieved and he often was invited to talk to studio technical operator trainees at the beeb because of his skills.
Interestingly, Everett spent a lot of time with the Beatles, George Martin and Geoff Emerick at Abbey Road during the creation of Sergeant Pepper and you see (hear) how production techniques had much in common.
As far as radio production technique is concerned, nobody in the UK had ever done what Everett was doing before (especially in the BBC, which kept people in their specific employment "boxes").
What's ironic is that, from a technical point of view, anybody can do this now with audio production software such as Garageband, which comes pre-installed on every new Apple Mac. There's a mass of software for PCs that can do this cheaply, as well.
And yet........... nobody seems to be bothered to use it inventively. Listen to almost any radio station and what do we get?
The same old same old. What a shame. RIP Kenny Everett - a true innovator who wasn't afraid to take risks. |

He may well have enjoyed them, we'll never know of course, but my only regret about the modern tracks they picked is that they were all on radio station's over-play lists and I still felt it necessary to turn them right down as, to me, they hadn't been 'rested' anywhere near long enough (it would have to be something like 10 years in the case of those tracks) before I could put up with hearing them again!
