The idea behind this thread is for those artists for whom one could be forgiven for thinking that they 'have but one song to sing' (two if they're lucky!) but those of us in the know, know differently. They have had more than the one or two big hits that you always hear on the radio. It is for those great ignored tracks that were hits, but are very seldom, if ever heard these days that I've started this thread for. Here's my first offering. Crowded House and 'Instinct': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QRmmJ8OCpqw&feature=related This is a Top Of The Pops clip, does anyone know who the female compere on that show was?

Lord, no sorry I do remember her but i'm sure she was during the time when the presenters were just picked up off the street rather than DeeJaays

On the odd occasion that a Jimi hendrix track gets played on R2 it will either be Voodoo Chile, Purple Haze or Hey Joe which are all ok esp Hey Joe but I always like to hear Burning Of The Midnight Lamp

Chris Hawkins played Todd Rundgren's 'Can We Still Be Friends?' on 6 Music last week - usually on Radio 2 we get I Saw The Light if Richard Allinson's on.

I think Chris is a Todd fan as we also had 'Bang The Drum All Day' another week.

This thread also reminds me of James Young's book on his time in Nico's touring band, 'Songs They Never Play On the Radio'.

Michael Ball HAS used the Velvet Underground & Nico's 'Sunday Morning' for a jingle, but Cerys Matthews played Nico's 'The Fairest Of The Seasons' and 'These Days' during her film soundtracks spot on 6 Music (both songs were in 'The Royal Tannenbaums').

Ha ha, and reminds me of a Bing Crosby album which I found and bought in a charity shop. The title is Songs I Wish I Had Sung.

And yes of course he does sing them on that album! The full title of the album (smaller print later) is

Songs I Wish I Had Sung the First Time Around

and the tracks include Mona Lisa, My Blue Heaven, April Showers etc

which OTHER artistes had made theirs

Tim Smith announced that he'll be playing a Motorhead track on tomorrow's Alex Lester show. The odds-on favourite must surely be 'Ace Of Spades' as that seems to be the only one that gets heard. It would be lovely to hear 'Overkill' for a change: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRpHkaHNLXI&feature=related

Undiscovered: sorry, I don't think I've EVER heard Hey Joe or Purple Haze on daytime Radio 2 (or other stations). They're far too good to be played by the dullards who choose the music.
All Along The Watchtower gets played a bit (quite rightly).

I've heard Hey Joe played on the Ken Bruce show surprising as that may sound but it might have been on the Tracks of My Years I just can't recall and I have heard Purple Haze also on daytime Radio 2 but neither are exactly regularly played Sad

It's odd that one of the most famous sessions that bbc ever did, and they hardly ever get played

Ruddles: It must have been on Tracks Of My Years, which features good songs. I certainly can't imagine Ken Bruce playing Hey Joe! (not gay enough for the producer).

Yesterday, I heard this played on 6 music. It's probably the first time I've heard it since the late 1970s when it was in the charts, so I think it still qualifies for inclusion in this thread! Here's 'East River' by The Brecker Brothers. I had forgotten how good it sounds: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f7l1zjp_wb4

Richard Norris's Saturday Morning (repeated on Thursdays) on ARFM played Joni Mitchell's Free Man In Paris, followed by Judgement Of The Moon & Stars.

And then he played Nexus, off Dan Fogelberg's Innocent Age double album, on which Joni sang backing vocals!

Usually we'll get Big Yellow Taxi if we're lucky on Radio 2.

There are so many fantastic hits that Radio 2 sadly neglect nowdays.
Here's a couple that I'd like to hear:-
Don Mcleans Castles In The Air
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTqi7iEZEWA
Bit of a cheat as I don't know if this was a hit but I'm loving it at the moment:-
The Buoys with Give Up Your Guns
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCCTXNU9-Gw
Like the Crowded House song LEE, not as good as this one I think:-

Don McLean's 'Castles In The Air' is indeed a classic song: wonderful melody, lyrics and arrangement. It was originally a B-side (of Vincent in 1972) which will explain why it's seldom played--though I've just checked my Guinness Book of Hits which says it was released as an A-side in the early 80s when it reached no 47!

Quite honestly, it's too good to be played alongside the fodder that Radio 2 dishes up to the masses.

Thanks for that Schizoid, didn't realise Castles only reached number 47!!!!!, I always thought it was a big hit.
I've been listening to an album called Acoustic Moods which has Castles on it, along with some other great tracks, including Pinball by Brian Protheroe which I didn't really know, but now love.

Castles In The Air used to get played a lot on Ray Moore's show.

I hated Gabriella Cilmi's Sweet About Me (pseudo-Amy Winehouse as with Duffy's 'Mercy'), but I wish they'd play Warm This Winter in full again on air.

Or maybe they'd think it was too much advertising for the Co-Op?

Liz Kershaw played the not too often heard 'I Ran' by A Flock Of Seagulls on her show today. This set me thinking about another rarity of theirs, which I do remember seeing on someone's playlist page recently. Can't even remember now whether it was a Radio 2 or 6 music show. Well anyway, the track was 'Space Age Lovesong' by A Flock Of Seagulls: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHjtij5vZfA

Nice to hear this rarity on the Christmas day Kenny Everett programme. Chris Rainbow's 'Solid State Brain': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZEhTSTwkbQ It's been many years since I last heard it played anywhere.

Lord Elpuss, I have the Kenny Everett Christmas Selection show on I-player as I write!

It was also nice to hear him and Harry Nilsson duetting on 'Mourning Glory Story' (originally from the 'Harry' album) over the piano loop.

I heard 'Solid State Brain'! Chris Rainbow was an act suited totally to Kenny Everett playlists because of his incredible harmonies.

I also associate him with Camel's later Decca stuff.

The Dawn French episode of Little Crackers (Sky One)had the Kinks's 'She's Bought A Hat Like Princess Marina's' over the end credits!

Was the song aired on the Johnnie Walker interview with Ray and Dave Davies?

Yes I think so, if not it was on the Arena programme. I have watched/listened to them both in the last couple of days.

Given the tributes to Gerry Rafferty, I'm surprised 'Her Father Didn't Like Me Anyway' or 'Can I Have My Money Back' haven't got more airplay.

Likewise re:Mick Karn, I fully expected Japan's 'Night Porter' to get played on Radcliffe & Maconie.

Yes, it did. It was used with some B&W archive film footage of Ladies Day at Ascot, I believe.

I got the remaster of Pink Floyd's Obscured By Clouds as part of a 2 for £10 in HMV - Stay is bloody brilliant and I wonder why Planet Rock or Rock Radio never play this instead of Another Brick In the Wall Pt. 2 or Money!

The other part of the 2 for £10 was Saucerful of Secrets - YouTube made me aware of the song Corporal Clegg and the intro's similarity to the Black Books theme tune! The backing vocals also sound like Bill Bailey in his 'ze money is in ze eyes' mode!

I bought obscurred by Clouds years ago but never really played it, I put it in my itubes library and had forgotten how good it is. It's missed off playlists because a/ it's not money or we don't need.. and b/ it's a soundtrack album rather than a "proper" album.
I like it's mellower sound.

Sauceful is an odd album I have it on vinyl so don't listen to it a lot, it's the bridging album between Barrett leaving and Gilmour joining, and you can kind of tell, it's alittle disjointed as an album but some good tracks on it.

Wouldn't it be nice to hear Bike or See Emily Play on a playlist even once apart from oldies on SW and KB piece with celebs

Thanks to 'Andy W' who originally posted this site on the 'Pick Of The Pops' thread on 'Shows & Music' Board. As well as the POTP section, there is one devoted to Top Of The Pops: http://s6.invisionfree.com/popscene/ar/t8798.htm It looks as though it was Julia Carling who did that day's show.
Quite a goldmine of info really as you can look up episodes from any decade: http://s6.invisionfree.com/popscene/ar/

On Drivetime this evening, Simon Mayo's 'Blues Showstopper' was 'Oh Well' by Fleetwood Mac (the original Peter Green incarnation) Of course it was the usual single 'part 1'. How often have you wondered what comes after the bit that got cut off for the single version i.e 'part 2'. I think the only person to play the whole shebang in recent times is Liz Kershaw on her 6 music show. It's quite possibly the only time I've ever heard it played on the radio. Well hear it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=knZltCtkedk .

Yes, part two is beautiful, with that flute (is it a flute?) and lovely Peter Green guitar solo, though it does drag on a bit at the end.

It was played on Radio Caroline one mid-day morning last week. That's why I listen to Radio Caroline and why I think Radio Two is a lost cause!!!!!!!

But at least Mayo played Part One, Colin, so Radio 2 should get some credit. It makes a change from the usual ELO/Queen dross.

Come to think of it, I seem to remember writing on this forum a few months ago that Planet Rock played both part one and part two.

Yes, I remember that too. I think it was either David Jensen on his Sunday show or during his co-hosting with Rick Wakeman on Saturday am.

Either way, it certainly wasn't on Radio 2! Recently, a Radio Caroline presenter dedicated a "three-in-a-row" type slot to John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. Now that definitely would never be heard on BBC Radio Boring! I bet the majority of the presentation and production staff have never heard of John Mayall let alone have any appreciation of his music (or of the pivotal role he played in musical development during the 60s and 70s).

It's quite pathetic really........

Stackridge's 'The Last Plimsoll' has never been heard to my knowledge on Radio 2 - though Johnnie Walker did play 'Hold Me Tight' recently.
