I did hear right Steve Wright had an email asking when Christmas songs start on the station. He said " Monday 29th November"

'Santa's A Scotsman' Don't recall who sings it but it's usually heard on Ken Bruce's show.
'The Boars Head Carol' by Steeleye Span
'Tar Barrel In Dale' by The Unthanks I think is aimed at Christmas / New Year. It certainly has that feel about it.
Of the more mainstream fare 'Step Into Christmas' by Elton John.

Couldn't believe it when I heard Wright say he may play some on Monday <YIKES> (I wish we had that R2 board smiley on here). It's far too soon.

I walked out of a shop the other day because they were playing THAT Christmas album.
My favourites of the "popular ones" are Walking in the Air (I prefer Aled singing to being a radio presenter although the original version in The Snowman is better), Saviours Day by Cliff and In Dulce Jubilo |

| The problem is they are in danger land when they play Christmas songs a little early, but they an't really early. Listeners do enjoy them, and the station does need to keep up with other radio stations, where we have seen two of them going national this year. They are starting to play them. I'm sure this has been agreed with the presenters and producers before they are aired. |

Mark it's not as if you don't hear them anywhere else, you can't escape them in shops as Gutsy has just said. November 29th is far too soon, 6th December is the earliest they should be played this year IMHO.

I went into a local store to exchange an item early yesterday morning in order to avoid the queues and they were playing Christmas music
When I asked the lady on the checkout how she could stand it all day she said that they only played it while the boss was there and when he went to another store at 10am they turned it off
That's ingenious thinking I said
Sure enough when I returned on my wy home they were playing Bat Out of Hell

Yes they are. It's completely absurd!
I went to a local market today and was confronted with the Sally Army Band playing "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" and heard Jingle Bells and that god-awful song by Slade playing from nearby shops.
It's 27th November for goodness sake! The week before Xmas is fine, but every year the commercial exploitation (for that's what it is) just gets more and more intolerable. |

Eileen it's a favourite of mine as well! Ed Stewart played it for me on his first Christmas show 2 or 3 years ago. I said I'd seen him in pantomine.
You'll be green with envy but that pantomime was in Newcastle at the Theatre Royal when I was 6. He asked for some children to come up to the stage. I somehow was one of the 3 up there, with 2 other boys so my mum tells me, and he sang 'Singin The Blues' which we joined in with! We were given several bags of sweets afterwards apparently.

I can't believe what a bunch of old miseries there are here!...
I'm certainly peed off with everything that's going on nowadays so the quicker some Christmas atmosphere penetrates the gloom the better!

The official policy of Radio 2 is apparently that Christmas tracks are supposed to be played a maximum of 2 weeks before Christmas
That's still a little too early for me and I think mid December is soon enough

I was in a shop today where the predictable xmas tacky music was making itself heard on the system. When I got to the payment desk I rolled my eyes at the assistant and said "I'm glad it's you working here and having to put up with this awful music and not me" and she replied "It drives us all mad. Even the manager doesn't like it, but head office tells us we have to because it's supposed to encourage people to spend money in the run-up to Christmas".
And that just about sums it all up! |

I know it's not quite Easter Eggs but in sainsbugs the other day they had a display with all the Christmas goodies - cakes, puds etc and a stack of hot cross buns next to it lol.
On the question of shops my own personal take on the seasonal music is that if they played nice Christmas carols or music people would be inclined to stay in the shop for longer as it is more soothing than the frenetic crimbo pop songs. Anyone else agree? |

I've eaten all the mince pies and am ready for the hot-cross buns now! Actually, we do eat them all year round. Last week we ate up a xmas pud we found in the back of the kitchen cupboard. It's only fruit cake, after all.
Easter eggs in November? Bring 'em on!!!
It's all so materialistic now I just don't care. |

It's the 2 weeks round Christmas, and I'm sure if they had room on the shelves in the stores they would sell them! I must admit I buy them quite frequently.

I haven't eaten Turkey since 1975.
I've just had to endure a TV ad for the "Now That's What I Call Xmas" 3CD set.
Gawd help us all. Same old boring tosh repackaged. Mind you, I bet there's a good few suckers will buy it.
