I'll happily admit to really liking Paul's show.. he made my evening tonight by playing the fabulous "Kalamazoo" by Glen Miller and his pals requiring a big increase in volume quickly followed by Doris Day's "Move over Darling"..
Why oh why can't we hear more of this type of music during the day? _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Didn't hear all of Paul's programme on Sunday but he had me chuckling when he told a story of when he was working on the North Pier in Blackpool. Apparently he had a bit of a row with one of the management over a wash basin (not being up to his standards) and he was brought a bunch of flowers to pacify him to which Paul said "Thanks, I'll just put them in water" and chucked them in the North Sea.
I can just picture him doing that. (with great disdain)

Nice one, Becky .
My favourite PO'G story is about the time his mother made a Christmas cake which was so hard that they couldn't hack into so they opened the back door and threw it into the garden ... and it broke the fence . |

I love Paul O'Grady's self-depracating story-telling style. Reading his autobiography a couple of years ago I could hear his voice bringing the words to life and I laughed aloud at so many of his stories, especially of life growing up on Merseyside. A good read! |

I think there might now be two, actually. The first one took him up to (I think) his Lily Savage days - so it's a kind of Pot Boiler really!!!
Edit: There are now three books - here's the link to a page on Amazon containing all the info:
http://amzn.to/16JitoV
(This is a shortened link - the real one is too long!)

I thought there was something wrong with my radio last night. I tuned in (very late) to Paul's programme and Louis Armstrong was singing the lovely It's A Wonderful World. Halfway through another voice broke in and started singing with Louis. I found out, when the record had finished, that Barry Manilow was Paul's guest and has got a new album out. On it he duets,.obviously due to some wizardy in the recording studio, with artists from the past that he has admired and Louis was one of them
I wish he hadn't.
Barry was the guest on Strictly later on in the evening and he sang this song. There was a video of Louis singing along too....it worked quite well visually but it was a shock on the radio. |

Oh dear. Barry seems to be all over the place at the moment - he's this week's Better Midler!
(As an aside, I was once stuck on an airport bus in between Barry and his boyfriend/assistant as they had a row. That was awkward - no only resisting saying "hey, you're Barry Manilow" but also "look, why don't you both sit down with a cup of tea when you get in rather than being petulant across my face" to them) |

Today's show is the last until October. I seem to recall that he did the same thing last year.
Looked on R Times site and it shows Len Goodman sitting in which should be okay. He usually plays some good tracks.

Some changes coming. Paul will now present two 13-week stints per year, alternating with comedian Rob Beckett. O'Grady's last of the current run will be 13 February, and he's back on 22nd May. |

Not a big viewer of daytime TV although the Parliament station has my attention quite regularly these unbelievable days ( )but caught Rob Beckett doing a quiz show a few months ago which quickly became a must watch, for me. I loved the format of the programme (Headhunters) which Rob made very watchable as the presenter. Hope it's back soon.
I have a feeling he might be good on this and if I have time (and remember) will have a listen. |

I don't know Rob Beckett at all but I listen to Paul as I make our late Sunday dinner so will miss him. I listen to very little R2 these days.

Rob performed at my theatre a few years ago and at the end of the show ran round the back so he could be at the exit to shake the hand of every audience member and thank them for coming. He plays too big venues to do that now but I thought it was a really nice gesture.
No idea if that makes him a good radio presenter though! |

He was good when filling in for Claudia Winkleman.
He is (relatively) young, of course, and I wonder if the music played will lurch more up-to-date, as it has on most other shows. _________________ Ron |

It's very odd - record-breaking audience figures, so they bring someone else into the slot. Did they learn nothing from the Simon Mayo fiasco? |

I wonder if it has anything to do with him presenting from home rather than in the studio? Maybe they want him back in but he isn't ready to.

That'd be a flimsy excuse if it's the case, H.
What gets me, is that they appear to be poles apart in just about everything, so quite baffling. I can't for the life of me, imagine Rob Beckett fans listening to R2 on a Sunday afternoon. If it was someone like Len Goodman, then I could. It's a foresight into what 'they' want to do with the old station.
Boom Radio must be well happy about it! _________________ life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans |

It is just another programme destroyed, I can't imagine what the thinking is here. I agree with Raver, Len Goodman would have been good, even I as a big Boom Radio listener would have re-tuned. Nowadays I only tune in for Johnnie Walker. _________________ Pirate Johnnie Walker played my request on 11 April 2009 |

Such a shame.... Johnnie Walker followed by Paul O'Grady was a rare oasis of quality in the R2 schedule, and a regular feature of my Sunday afternoons.
There may be a place for Rob in the R2 line-up, but the POG slot is definitely not it.
I sometimes wonder if the people who run Radio 2 actually listen to it. |

Looking at twitter it seems that Beckett may have brought some of his fans to the station, but there's a lot more comments from people missing Paul and Malcolm. And many more from people who like Rob but don't think he's right for that slot. |
