According to Bob Harris' website, Mark is leaving R2 at the end of the year. Another loss of specialist music shows - tragic. |

I agree, someone with a genuine passion for music leaving the station.
Bob Harris has posted an email from Mark that reads:
Apologies for the impersonal nature of this email but I'm sending this to you as you've shown some interest in my Radio 2 shows over the last years. In short, I'll be leaving Radio 2 at Christmas, presumably for good. It's become obvious over the last year the station has become much less interested in non mainstream music, and my position there has been extremely uncomfortable. It's a sign of the times I suppose. I'm stupidly proud of the shows I've done there for 12 years and I know I always did the right thing. I'm equally sure I'm doing the right thing now. Not looking for sympathy, or another job, or even a reply. Just letting you know. Mark Lamarr

It's a real shame another "music fan" leaves R2.
A sign of the times? yes for commercial stations where figures are everything R2 is different to that, no it isn't but it should be. _________________ You will hear gospel and rhythm and blues and jazz, all those are just labels, we know that music is music. |

Dreadful shame that Mark Lamarr has left.
I know many here are fans of Radcliffe and Maconie's thrice-a-week evening show but if they were moved to 6music then that would free up several hours every week on Radio 2 for non-mainstream or specialist shows like Mark's. _________________ -

The problem with moving stuff to 6Music is that you immediately marginalise it even more. Given that it's a DAB-only station, 6Music is relatively inaccessible for most people and although it's certainly available online or through DVT/DVB (terrestrial/satellite) systems it's still swimming against the current. |

A question Bob Shennan should be asking......is there anyone out there? .........but then he probably doesn't care. He is still being paid to wreck the station. _________________ Pirate Johnnie Walker played my request on 11 April 2009 |

Though not a specialist show, Radcliffe & Maconie regularly go off the beaten track with the music played on their show. Having said that, it is indeed a great shame that Mark Lamarr is to leave Radio 2. I am becoming disillusioned with Radio 2. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

I thoroughly enjoyed Mark's 50s prog the other day, and it's a shame he's going. The 50s is a much neglected decade on Radio 2 and elsewhere.
He was also good on Saturday mornings when sitting in for Jonathan Ross. |

I've long since lost hope! My disillusionment started the minute it was announced that Irritating Evans had been recruited to Drivetime. |

From Media Guardian:
BBC Radio 2 spokesman:
"Mark Lamarr has decided to leave Radio 2 in December. We are sorry to see him go and wish him well for the future.
"We have a greater commitment than ever before to specialist music genres and feature an extraordinarily broad range of music going back over seven decades throughout the Radio 2 schedule. We plan to replace his shows with equally distinctive content in 2011."
Gods Jukebox to finish early Christmas day. Shake, Rattle and Roll ends December 14.

For me the rot began when Lesley Douglas messed around with Saturdays and slashed Richard Allinson's afternoon show shortly before removing it completely and replacing him with Evans. Over the years Saturday Radio 2 has gone from being unmissable to barely listenable, with me usually going for 6 music, at least part of the afternoon. These days I hardley listen to Radio 2. On my days off (midweek) I'll listen to Ken Bruce then over to 6 music and then Simon Mayo and (depending on subject matter) the post Drivetime specialist shows and Radcliffe / Maconie. Weekend wise, If I'm lucky enough to have Saturday off, I'll listen to Sounds Of The 60s then that's about it. I'll give Graham Norton a try, to see what his show is like. Sundays just Sounds Of The 70s and Paul O'Grady (unless I'm out somewhere!) I suppose this does make it easier to catch up with shows I missed or which are normally either partly or completely beyond reach because I'm in the land of nod when they are broadcast. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

I love these stock-in-trade Press Announcements (that are usually written by the PR people anyhow).
It's about as convincing as saying to someone "If you decide to leave, we won't stop you" or "We've decided to let you go". In other words, sod off because we have another halfwit celebrity rent-a-gob lined up in your place.
What I hope has happened is that Lamarr has decided that he's fed up with the rubbish station that Radio 2 now is (and run by increasingly incompetent people) that he has resorted to saying "stuff this for a game of soldiers"!
Which is a pity, because his enthusiasm for left-of-field music is infectious, and I like listening to him very much. |

LEE, I'm afraid I completely agree with your assessment. Saturdays (at least from 2pm onwards) used to be pretty much perfect listening for me, right through from RA through to the end of Bob's show. Now? I usually forget to listen to Gambo's show, which would be the only one I'd still want to listen to - since Bob's show has been shunted beyond midnight, I have to Listen Again (and that's not always possible now due to a lack of time through the week).
In fact, I listen to Radio 4 more than R2 nowadays. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

This is interesting - and you don't have to read between the lines to get the gist of what went on between him and that idiot Shennan.
Here's the source link for the quotes below:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-11911639
The BBC website wrote: |
Mark Lamarr to leave BBC Radio 2
Mark Lamarr previously co-hosted Channel 4 late night show The Word
Radio 2 presenter Mark Lamarr is to quit the station after 12 years, it has been announced.
The former Never Mind The Buzzcocks host presented a weekly late night show and specialist music series Shake, Rattle and Roll.
Station controller Bob Shennan said he was "sorry" about Lamarr's departure, adding that his request for an earlier slot had not been granted. |
Aha! In other words, take what you have or leave it....
The BBC website wrote: | In an e-mail to presenters, Lamarr said: "It's become obvious over the last year the station has become much less interested in non-mainstream music, and my position has been extremely uncomfortable." |
In other words, Lamarr was told to get on his bike!
The BBC website wrote: | Mr Shennan said: "We wish him well and the door is never closed. |
Yeah, right. We believe you, Bobby Boy.
According to Bob "Do I actually have a clue what I'm doing here?" Shennan: "Radio 2's music offer has never been stronger, more diverse or more popular. Next year we have plans to broaden it still further with more genres and new presenters." Hmmm. Re-arrange these two words: "Excrement" and "Bull".
The BBC website wrote: | A BBC spokesman said: "We plan to replace Mark's shows with equally distinctive content in 2011." |
Which is a coded way of saying: "We're looking for even more stuff in the style of the sort of crap we're broadcasting on the station right now".
What a lamentable state of affairs on what was once the UK's foremost radio station. |

I am absolutely gutted!
God's Jukebox was one of the few shows left on Radio 2 I still went out of my way to listen to, rarely at the ungodly hour it was broadcast, but always on Listen Again, and never was I disappointed. Mark has turned me on to some fantastic music over the years, and I am going to miss him greatly. Like I say, gutted!
Mark has every right to be proud - he was a beacon of light in the sea of dross that Radio 2 has become and his departure is yet another nail in the coffin of a once great Radio station. |

I could not agree more.
I am also extremely disappointed-Mark is an excellent presenter and like other posters have mentioned presents an excellent show.
That's another 3 hrs less weekly listening time for me re Radio 2. |

I'm a bit confused here. If it is true that Lamarr quit after a request for an earlier time for his show does this mean despite his saying awful things about Radio 2 he would have continued? |

Couldn't agree more, Milord. Where I used to listen all the time now I hardly ever bother. SOTS, POTP and Titchmarch are all I bother with at the weekend. Weekdays, KB and a little Vine and that's it. Still, on the bright side, my knowledge of classical music is coming on a treat. _________________ I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. |

Me too. I've always enjoyed Radio 4 (I think it really is the jewel in the BBC's radio crown) and I too have found myself tuning in to R4 as I run the boss into the office at 8.30am and then return home. There's something cosy and re-assuring about starting the day with R4, I've decided.
The local BBC station is cheesy, the local Heart clone is dire beyond belief and there isn't a music-based station that's worth the bother. And, of course, Radio 2 offers no alternative whatever for as long the insufferable gob still has a breakfast-time presence on the network. |

I did read he asked Bob Shennan for an earlier slot, but was declined the offer. So guess this was one of the reasons for his departure. |

I think Bob "Am I really the Controller?" Shennan's words were: "Take it or leave it, Mark" so perhaps Mark decided to leave it.
I can't say I blame him. In fact, I'd love to have been a fly on the wall at that meeting. |

Followed a link on Digital Spy.
Bob Harris posted this 24/12/2010 on his blog, Mark Lamarr thread,
Quote: |
I'm going to be taking over the God's Jukebox slot on Friday nights for three months, starting on 7th January...with Mark's blessing.
I'll be doing my best to keep to the tradition of the programme and plan to raid my CD and vinyl collection for the most interesting music I can find...so there'll be more oldies, interspersed with the best of the new stuff.
It will definitely sound different from the Country and Saturday night shows, beginning with an all-UK mix...some psychedelia, progressive, folk, skiffle and anything else that seems to fit.
I really wish Mark was still going to be doing the show in the new year but he's glad, at least, that it's me taking over.
I'll do my very best to live up to what I've thought for years to be the most interesting and creative music show on the radio.
