...... Boney M?
TB has just played a mash-up (I think that's the current vernacular!) of their stuff on POTP. I've never understood the point of Boney M! What utter dross.
The problem is that "Rivers of Babylon" is one of those dreadful and annoying songs that's so difficult to avoid singing along to!
I nominate Boney M for Room 101 with immediate effect. |

That German bloke in Boney M seemed quite superfluous and apparently never sang a note on any of their recordings
If you watch any of their videos he has a very strange way of dancing if that's what he's trying to do
It looks as though he's had a serious wardrobe malfunction with his trousers or is it just me being silly
Have a look on You Tube and see what you think _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Very cheesy song. I missed the second half today. 1969 was brilliant today. Can't wait to hear the live show soon.

The second year was 1992 not a wonderful one for music I would respectfully suggest _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Yes it is difficuclt to justify the existence of Boney M but that was the disco glam era and in those days folks would dress up and dance to anything.
I'm sure others have the same opinion of other bands of the time, say, The Sweet ? _________________ -

I was dragged along to a gig by The Sweet when I was a student (and used to seeing "proper" bands on a Saturday night) and I have to admit to being blown away by them. Wow! They were loud and an amazingly tight band. Great fun.
It was at about the same time that I saw Queen for the first time (at Plymouth Polytechnic) and they were just stunningly good, as was David Bowie. All wasn't bad where "glam" was concerned.
However, Boney M.....................................???????? |

The Sweet were known as a kind of teeny glam rock band but some of their singles had superb B sides most of which were really heavy rock
Some of them as I recall would have done Led Zeppelin proud
The Sweet were and are still a much maligned band _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

I agree, Boney M were particularly pointless. Trouble is, their nauseating songs are horribly catchy.
Never liked Sweet either. Mind you, there was so much rubbish around in the 70s that they sort of blended in.
There was also a hell of a lot of good stuff as well of course.
Ruddles: I read somewhere many years ago that Sweet, before they were famous, were a genuine heavy rock band in the late 60s. |

I saw The Sweet live but I was never lucky enough to see Zeppelin but Colin I can quite believe what you say
Actually maybe I'm a bit biased because my former business partner Max used to play in a band called 48th Dearbourne who in the late 60s and early 70s supported some of the big names in rock around at that time and he actually taught Steve Priest of the Sweet to play the guitar
I don't think he taught him anything about make up though
The greatest claim to fame of 48th Dearbourne was that they attended an audition in 1976 for a recording contract with EMI Records and were very unlucky to miss out - apparently it was between them and some other band called The Sex Pistols and as they say the rest is history _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

I think dressing up, pouting and wearing makeup was all a bit girly.. and a little worrying back then.. but enough about me,
I thought Sweet were an excellent, and heavy, band.. definitely worthy of turning my Harry Moss car stereo to max when any of their big hits came on... apart from Co-co maybe... same goes for Slade.. can't hear them enough.. even that one that gets played a lot this time of year.
Boney M? - crap.. funny how you remember their songs though isn't it? I wonder if we'll all remember James (yawn) Blunt's dross over the same period? mind you, I'll be brown bread by then. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

I think it could be said that Sweet were a tale of two bands. The band who were being driven by Chinnichap when they had their biggest hits ('Little Willy', 'Coco' etc) and when they broke free from them and when success seemed more limited 'Fox On The Run', 'Action' I think were the biggest hits in that era which I think they wrote. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

I disagree. Rasputin was a classic, and Mary's Boy Child is a superb Xmas tune! |

Alexandra Burke's recent (appalling) hit song "Start Without You" bears an uncanny resemblance to Boney M - let's hope it's not the start of a revival! |

I know what you mean Ian - "Hooray, Hooray, It's A Holi-Holiday!"
Actually I quite like that Alexandra Burke track - at least, for an X-Factor winner, it's got a bit of go in it.
And I liked Boney M as well - I bought their LPs Love For Sale and Nightflight to Venus, and enjoyed them just as much as all the Pink Floyd and Genesis, Queen and Bowie, Little Feat and Mahogany Rush that I also loved in the 70s (bought most of my classical music collection then as well - was single you see).
There has never been anything wrong with a well produced, tuneful pop song, apart, perhaps and arguably, from being overplayed on the radio. _________________ Ron |

I like Boney M- there was an underlying sense of humour in a lot of what they did. Music isn't all about being deadly serious and worthy.... it's fun, too! _________________ He's not the Messiah- he's a very naughty boy! |

Probably... that was another of Radio 2's "we'll play it to death and you WILL like it" tracks as far as I'm concerned.. luckily for me, my internet radio has saved me from going glassy eyed and liking Take That... _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

I noticed he died today....
"Bobby Farrell, front man of the 1970s disco group Boney M, has died at the age of 61, his agent has announced."

It appears his vocal talents won't be missed; his producer used to sing the male parts in the studio and he mimed to them on stage.
Given the fact that he always looked a complete berk when appearing with them, he didn't really have much going for himself did he!! |

My principle is that my thoughts about him (and the appalling BoneyM) when he was alive haven't changed one bit now that he has kicked the bucket. |
