I've just read the sad news that Mick Karn bass guitarist with Japan has died aged 52

My son adores/d Japan and shared Mick Karn's birthday

I liked some of their music and often found myself singing Night Porter after hearing it drift downstairs from his bedroom.

His fretless bass playing on Japan's "Quiet Life" was exemplary!

I was very sad to hear this news today.

Mick famously admitted to not knowing one end of a fretboard from the other but his unique style of bass playing contributed to Japan being one of the most outstanding and original bands of the late 70's/early 80's.

I wonder if Mick will receive anywhere near the amount of tributes that Gerry Rafferty has received from the daytime R2 schedule...

My thoughts exactly. The Gerry Rafferty story proves that most people working in radio know of only two of his songs - and it's those they talk about and play.

I bet there's barely a producer at Radio 2 who can think of one number by Japan let alone identify a song where Mick's skills as a bassist shine through.

Sad really, but there you go.

I forget which I'm Alan Partridge episode it was in, but he refers to Japan as something like 'weird made-up gentlemen' while back-announcing Life In Tokyo!

I was very sorry to hear the news. I'd read that he'd been ill for sometime via the Porcupine Tree website and I know that they created and sold a live album to help pay for his treatment.
