Helen: I also got my first cassette recorder in Nov/Dec 1970! I too recorded a few POTP (illegally). |

You're probably all listening anyway but it's another great 60s chart today, Feb 1966.

Certainly one of the best I've heard.. 65, 66 and 67 the very best of music years for me!
Luckily, I have one of my Internet Radio's presets set to Pick of the Pops so I always listen twice. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Much as I like POTP I am now becoming very tired of the incessant jingles.
Also I think that Tony shouldn't do charts beyond mid eighties. He just sounds forced, as though he's reading the words but not quite understanding who the acts are _________________ I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. |

That would be fine with me Number 6... most stuff past the 80s is very forgettable as far as I'm concerned.. all the more reason to have Radio2 extra I think.. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

I'd listen to R2 Extra if ever it became a reality! Quite like Smooth 70s as it is at the moment, no ads.

Helen, I've got my Roberts iStream set to an American staion called "Got Radio? Fabulous 50s" and it really is fabulous if you like 50s music which I certainly do.. well most of it at least..
It's really great listening and, no ads at all!
Yesterday, I heard "Sugar in the morning, Sugar in the Evening, Sugar at supper Time... be my liitle Sugar and love me all the time"... I don't remember the track name but blimey that took me back!
I have another iStream in my workshop set to Retro Radio and most evenings, Jack Benny is on... he was soooo funny!
I know we shouldn't live in the past but sometimes it's just what I want to do.. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

I must admit I've not really fiddled around with the internet stations that much SF so I'll have a play with it. I tend to leave it on Kool 98.7 that is in Bismarck North Dakota. 60s.70s,80s and a lot of 10 in a rows.

For those who love the music of the 50s / early 60s. I would recommend the "British Hit Parade" series issued by Acrobat Music (though give the 1961 edition a wide berth as the sound quality is dire....).

And I continue to love them and sang along as I always do to "Music hour by hour" when it came on.
I didn't think much,if any, of the chart music of the sixties had passed me by but I don't remember the one by Paul and Barry Ryan that Tony played at all...loved hearing the Barry White one in the '79 chart. |

Helen: there were indeed some great songs from POTP yesterday, Feb 66: Day Tripper, 19th Nervous Breakdown, Till The End Of The Day etc, and I've always loved The Walker Brothers' My Ship Is Coming In.
But there was also some awful stuff which I'd never heard of or had forgotten about. A dreadful version of The Beatles' Girl, an awful Cilla Black song and The Overlanders' Michelle. I suppose our memories are selective and we only remember the good ones. |

Becky: there seemed to be a spate of untalented bands in the mid 60s who couldn't write their own songs and with cynical management who would do bad covers of Beatles' songs and then disappear altogether.
Yes, that Paul and Barry Ryan song was very good. I'd never heard it before and don't think it was a big hit. |

I wonder if people bought the covers of Beatles' tracks as they were only issued on the Album (Rubber Soul ?) which perhaps they couldn't afford? OR maybe the originals weren't played because they were on the album and album tracks were probably not often played? This was of course pre Radio 1 days.
Strangely I always loved that Barry Ryan track!

I think you're right, H.
No singles were released from Rubber Soul. Groups and producers were quite eager to cover the songs as an easy way of getting into the singles chart, and people who perhaps couldn't afford the album straight away were happy to buy the substitutes.
There were at least two simultaneous covers of Girl - by The Truth and by St Louis Union, and they were both heavily promoted by the offshore pirate radio stations, which probably helped sales and their chart positions. |

Annoying yet again to note on today's first hour from 1976 that the highest climber in the chart was The Glitter Band's 'People like You, People like Me' up 21 places yet Mr Swern still didn't feel it justified being played
Why does the BBC persist in claiming that there's no ban on Glitter Band tracks when all shows continually fail to play them?
I'd have more respect for them if they told the truth however illogical and stupid their thinking might be _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

I quite enjoyed today's offerings... I practically lazed on the couch listening to the show all the way through.. wood burner blazing away, all very nice and relaxing.
I have to admit, when I heard the two years featured, I thought 76 would be good and 99 doubtful but in fact it was the other way around! most of the 99 tracks were pretty good. is it really 13 years ago that Blondie made that comeback???
One of my favourite tracks played was "Shawn Mullins— Lullaby"... a great song I think but it reminds me of pulling off the dealer's forecourt in my brand new Grand Cherokee.. the first song I heard on it's radio.
I still have it, still going strong, drives much the same and the equivalent of travelling five times around the world! _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Tony Blackburn had a great response playing chart music from 1999 on Saturdays Pick Of The Pops. Blur and Britney Spears was No 1 on that week 3rd March 1999.
I think from what I gather they tried it out as it's 13 years old, so maybe 2000 will get an airing next year. |

Although I can't say I particularly disliked any of the tracks from 1999 I do thing that perhaps it is a little too recent for a show like POTP
After all as I recall the stated policy of Radio One is to cover music since 1990 so perhaps that station should have a show playing tracks from the old charts over the last 20 years and leave Radio 2 to play the pre 1990 stuff
Obviously if the two shows were broadcast at seperate times any R2 regulars who wanted to hear the tracks from later years could switch over or alternatively there is always the option of I Player _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

I liked it, but it was a rip-off from Robbie Robertson's Lazy River.

Oh yes - agree with that! It's one of those that was ubiquitous at the time but now it comes on and it takes second to realise it's not the Robertson song. I'm glad Tony mentioned The Thorns as that was much better stuff from Mullins. |

Tony did say on Twitter he got a huge response regarding the year and thought between him and his producer try it out. Didn't dale do 1999 when he was hosting the show? |

There was a discussion here about 6 months ago about what was the worst year in music. I said 1976 was, and someone else fully agreed. It was an awful year, unless you like The Wurzels and Brotherhood Of Man.
It was a vacuum between prog rock and punk. There was literally nothing memorable about it. Coincidentally The Times about three weeks ago, in an article on the worst years for music, also said 1976. They also nominated 1961. Elvis had gone all sentimental, and as for Charlie Drake...
Ruddles, I agree, POTP should really concentrate on 60s to 80s. The 90s belong to Radio One. |

Looking at that list, Becky, there are indeed some brilliant songs from 1961:
Johnny Remember Me, Poetry In Motion, Halfway To Paradise, Hello Mary Lou, Every Little Star, Calender Girl, all fabulous.
Trouble is there are some stinkers there too (the aforementioned My Boomerang Won't Come Back and many others).
And every year has its classic hits, even 1976. |

Nah, the 90s are just as valid. I think the average age of a Radio 2 listener is the same as 10 years ago so some of them must have been listening to music in the 1990s! |

Listening to it and liking, or remembering it is a different matter though... as I mentioned, I found the tracks played pretty good on this occasion but as to the rest of the 90s... I don't think I'd remember too much of it. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07
