JK is a particularly disgusting individual but I still think his songs should still be played. Again, Auntie knows best.

Slightly off topic maybe, but I wonder why they edited out X-Ray Spex 'Germ Free Adolescence' from the 23-11-78 edition of Top Of The Pops when repeated on BBC 4 recently. OK the track might not appeal to everyone but, I don't remember anything truly offensive or controversial about this track. Does anyone know differently?

Certainly nothing problematical about that track - probably the best one from the chart in question Rolling Eyes

JK only produced it, so why not play it? As you say, Schizzo, a good record. Not as if it was Laurie Lingo and the Dipsticks, is it?

As I said in the TOTP thread, it wasn't cut from the post-midnight repeat.

Did anyone else notice Auntie Beeb's latest censorship on POTP today? They played Chuck Berry's 'Memphis Tennessee' but cut it short before the words 'Marie is only six years old'. Appalling sanctimonious BBC at its worst. OK, Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis may have had their problems transporting under age children over the state boundary but we don't need the BBC telling us what we should listen to.

Now I know why Gilbert O'Sullivan's Claire never gets played.

I always thought that the Chuck Berry song was about his 6 year old daughter? That wouldn't make it worthy of censorship would it or am I being rather naïve? Confused I have to say that I always thought the Gilbert O'Sullivan song was rather weird.

He played it live on JV's lunchtime show not that long ago.

That was a good few years ago now Colin, long before all this took hold.

I thought he'd done a live performance on the KB show quite recently but I can't recall whether he played that actual track - does anyone else remember? Confused

Yes it was definitely this year. I'm pretty sure he played "Claire" too. He explained the story behind the song.

Well done to Liza Tarbuck for playing this on her show of 23/11! http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b03j0vk8

Did anyone else other than me notice something rather odd on the show today?

We all know that Radio 2 in common with almost all other radio stations declines to play tracks by one Mr G Glitter but yet today when it came to the track at number two it was played despite the fact that the same included a rendition of the Glitter track 'Rock and Roll Christmas'

Is this a case of someone close to the show not knowing their music adequately or was the actual Glitter hit written by someone other than him so that he doesn't derive any financial benefit?

I would suggest that the first explanation is more likely Smile

I love Neil Young's voice and harmonica playing so good to hear his Heart Of Gold on Tony's programme today.

Also enjoyed hearing Sweet Talking Guy by The Chiffons ...one I always find myself singing along to. Smile

Nice to hear some unfamiliar tracks, like 'Friends' by The Beach Boys, Somewhere In The Country' by Gene Pitney & 'Cry Like A Baby' by The Box Tops, instead of the usually played one or two tracks by these artists.

It was a really good show today from two really good years but I was a little annoyed that they failed to play the track 'If I Only Had Time' by New Zealander John Rolls which is hardly ever heard on radio these days preferring to include certain other tracks regularly heard in normal daytime shows Sad

I was trying to reduce the amount of junk (amassed over 35 years) in the loft earlier as POTP was blasting out in the room immediately below me. My wife was in the same room trying to decide what to keep and what not to keep (she found her teddy bear from when she a few months old back in the 1850s) and "singing" along to the sixties classics. What a din.

At least it kept the cats out of the garden, though! And the mice in the loft (I know there there somewhere, the little buggers) must have been terrified.

That's the trouble with sixties songs you could 'sing' to so many of them!

We're attempting to do the same in our house Colin, 31 years of 'gatherings' Rolling Eyes.

At first glance I thought it was a hit in 69 but on checking it was 68. Apparently it was in the charts for 18 weeks, so I wonder if it will feature in a future edition and that was why it was left out today?

Yep. The number of times I've asked myself "Why have we devoted valuable space to keeping all this tat for so long?" Our 8-year-old grand-daughter has revelled in looking through her mum's school stuff though!

No one likes (late) 60s music more than me but I was a bit disappointed by this one. Too many slushy ballads...perhaps that's why they didn't play the John Rowles song, though it might have been going down the charts that week. I don't think they play too many that are on their way out of the charts. I really liked that Gene Pitney one, which I've not heard before.

Highlights: The Love Affair and 'Rainbow Valley' and the excellent 'I Don't Want Our Loving To Die' by The Herd (Pete Frampton on vocals of course).

Both those tracks are superb Schiz - Steve Ellis is IMHO one of the most underrated singers of all time and as for The Herd - what can you say - they were well ahead of their time and included some fine musicians who went on to even better things

As for the John Rowles track my recollection is that it was based on a classical piece but I can't remember which - can anyone tell me without resorting to Google Smile

Ruddles I think you are correct about the John Rowles track being based on something else but I've no idea what - sorry.

Quite a good show so far today, 1964. Always liked the Merseybeats version of Wishin and Hopin'.

I was a bit disappointed by 1964, too much Jim Reeves/Billy Fury etc. but it was nice to hear Billy J Kramer's From A Window and the Nashville Teens' Tobacco Road.

And there were two classics: The Stones and 'It's All Over Now' and Dusty's magnificent 'I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself'. Strange that they're half a century old! Crying or Very sad

I remember not enjoying all the Jim Reeves records at the time, I hadn't heard of him until his death!

There was still quite a contrast in the type of records that made the charts back then wasn't there?

What's always noticeable about the Top 20 in the years between 1964 and 1968 is the dominance of British acts. It really was a golden age for popular music! Things really went downhill from around 1970, when the "pop" and "rock" music each went their separate ways.

It was funny hearing the Jim Reeves songs; when I was a student we invaded a little "old people's pub" close to Plymouth Polytechnic in which there was a jukebox. The pub seemed to host the local branch of the Jim Reeves Fan Club because that's all that ever played on the jukebox, so we threw a cat among pigeons by playing Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Deep Purple, etc. The locals complained and the manager was forced to turn the volume down!

Those Jim Reeves songs on POTP brought it all back...

I suppose so, but I always thought you could tell what teenagers were buying and what the 'grown ups' had bought, Jim Reeves in this week's case.

Ken Bruce plays it fairly regularly - but as with many other artists it seems to be a 'one trick pony'

Why do they never play tracks like 'Hero and Heroine' Or 'Stormy Down' Or 'Shine On Silver Sun ' all equally as good - in fact the Strawbs are one of my favourite artists of the last 50 years Smile

Am listening to the first hour of today's show. Have to say that it's a good 'un, with a Mary Hopkin rarity, Black Sabbath, Christie (Not 'Yellow River'!) & an also not often heard Tremeloes track 'Me & My Life'. Think I'll pass on the second hour though.

That one passed me by completely at the time,LEE,and it got to 19 in the charts!

I enjoyed hearing Julie Do Ya Love Me by White Plains and It's Wonderful by Jimmy Ruffin on yesterday's programme

It was the same for me re the Mary Hopkin track Becky.

I too loved Julie Do Ya Love Me and of course anything by Jimmy Ruffin. I saw him in cabaret in 1970/1(?) at a small club in Newcastle on IIRC a Thursday rather than a weekend night and my friend and I got there about 1030 after the pubs had closed and we got front seats right by the stage. He was fabulous!

I heard this on the radio the other day about Cliff and his songs, since his house was raided back in August

"There has been a “significant drop” in the number of times his songs have been played after the BBC showed footage of the swoop.

Though he has not been arrested or charged, his airplay has fallen around two-thirds since his £3million Berkshire home was targeted in August.

A BBC probe using figures from Radio Monitor, which catalogues all songs broadcast, shows a reduction across all stations."

Tony played All My Love by Cliff today and when it had finished he said that on POTP you hear records that you don't often hear on the radio ...wonder if that was a veiled reference to that piece of news?
