Well out of all that lot I'll record Aled and find something else for the rest of the day!

Simon Mayo never seems to take many holidays like the rest. I think he has young children? He seems to work for months before he takes a holiday. Steve Wright hasn't got young children, they have all grown up now, and Chris Evans only has a youngester. I know Ken has younger children. It seems Richard Allinson never seems to get a look in now.

Think Simon's kids are older mark, I vaguely recall him saying one has just started uni a few months back.

I suppose they are now, as I do also recall they were babies when he was at Radio 1.

When I was managing teams I'd have turned down some of the leave requests if everyone wanted the same week off, seemingly Mr Shennan doesn't. Must admit I enjoyed listening to Chris last time he covered for Steve though.
I don't recall, but haven't checked back, the R2 jocks taking quite so much time off back in the 80s/90s.
Zoe Ball in for Ken means that she's back at the weekend too, so Lynn Parsons has just another week of cover.

Maybe he's just wanting to write a whole week off rather than lose listeners over a number of weeks? I know I won't be listening to any of the stand-ins, although I might forget and tune into Zoe for at least five seconds before remembering. R4 is going to be my sole refuge at work that week - unable to get MW, DAB or internet radio there.... Crying or Very sad

I doubt the station will lose listeners.

It's not that bad.

I look forward to tuning into Zoe and Chris T-both fine presenters imo.

Mark, to borrow a well Known phrase ' You cannot be serious'

You are talking second rate presenters most of whom are far worse than the people they are standing in for

By the way why isn't Lynn Parsons covering any of these shows

She's free all week so why don't the BBC give her a proper chance

How can anyone believe that Zoe Ball is better than L ynn Parson in the female stakes?

Sorry I don't agree with you.

Chris Tarrant presented the breakfast show on Capital Radio for many years-the Show/Chris T received high praise at the time.

In Zoe's case I enjoy her style of presenting-I can't stand Bruce -never have done and never will so she is a breath of fresh air to me compared to the regular incumbent.

Both Steve Wright and Ken Bruce have had their day and should be pensioned off.

I agree with you though re Lynn Parsons-a fine professional presenter-one of my favourites. Indeed why does she not feature in this particular week-they could have tried her out on the breakfast show instead of Madeley.

Maybe Lynn is only contracted herself to cover certain for Radio 2 ie : Early Breakfast and Zoe Ball Saturday Show. Lynn has a contract with Smooth radio, which also could include her to cover shows at that station, as well as presenting her own weekend show. We are back to this argument again. " Are these presenters the correct ones to cover" I think they are, but true some are missing like Richard Allinson.

I'm sorry but I think they are the totally wrong presenters to cover

I think for the first time ever I will not listen to Radio 2 at all on weekdays

The whole network is going downhill at a frightengly rapid rate Sad

Ruddlescat-I gave up on the weekday schedules a long time ago.

If you want to listen to quality radio on Radio 2 let me point you towards the programmes of Messrs Allinson and Harris at the weekends-not only do these programmes restore your faith in quality radio, presented by professionals, who have a knowledge and passion for the music played, but it makes you realise as Colin so well puts it that "daytime on Radio 2 is crap".

I haven't tuned in to anything for weeks Monday to Friday, all I listen to now are SOTS, POTP and JW's Sounds of the Seventies.

Lynn Parsons has a six year old son ( she mentioned him on today's programme ) so perhaps she wanted to spend half term with him.

Ditto! Those are the only shows I listen to intentionally these days. This morning, as an experiment, I set TuneIn Radio on my iPhone to record SOTS for playback in the car later - which says much for SOTS given the massive choice available on TuneIn. It's only when you open your ears to what other people are doing around the webbosphere that you realise how naff much of R2's is.

The only daytime I listen to is KB, then most of my listening is after 7pm, SOTS and Sundays.

6 music all week for me, then!

Would give Planet Rock more of a listen, if it wasn't for the dreadful ads...autoglass repair... autoglass replace.... again and again and again...

I was listening to "Sixties at Six" on Coastline Radio 97.6 (Eastern Costa Del Sol, Spain) today and what a great hour it was! (NB: their clocks are currently an hour ahead, so it was a 5.00pm -so you might have worked that out for yourself).

Boycott, I hate that Autoglass radio ad too! Rock Radio have one that begins 'If you could see what I can see...', promoting Samsung products and I want to join in with '..when I'm cleaning windows!'

Go Compare was bad enough.

Radio Caroline has been a fab alternative to boring Radio 2 today. We've been treated to a string of Bowie and Elton John songs that aren't so well-known, in addition to a three-track tribute to Gary Moore. Again, not the obvious material that unimaginative R2 producers would dig out.

Can I ask on here what frequency is Caroline (is that allowed on a R2 board)

I have tuned into Smooth....and it is gentle. The adverts on all the commercial stations are a pain. So after a quarter of an hour I switch off

I know its on Sky's platform and possibly online but I believe they are trying to get a frequency on AM.

Colin will know best...

If you have Sky (even the basic once-only payment installation) it's on Sky 0199 (where 199 was the original Medium Wave frequency back in 1964). However, I access it either by the Caroline App for iPhone or TuneIn Radio app for iPhone and Android phones. The phone is slotted into my Gear4 dock and plays through the stereo speakers just like a radio. It streams via my WiFi router. I can also stream on the move thanks to the phone's 3G data capability, though the bit rate is reduced and depends on mobile network coverage. It's great!

That's another bonus for Radio Caroline - very few ads due to the station been supported by listener and corporate sponsorship. The fact that many of the staff are volunteers helps, of course!

There was an article by Paul Donovan in this week's Sunday Times on Radio Caroline. Back page but one in the Culture section if you still have a copy.

The Caroline organisation is trying to grab an available AM radio frequency for use in the South East (for nostalgia's sake) and there's an early-day motion vote on whether or not it should be granted coming up in the Commons soon. That's partly why the station is attracting media attention at the moment.
