I've been listening and it's just ending as I write this Becky, I love Gerswhin's songs! I remember hearing Benny Green do a programme on him must be almost 15 years ago now and that was good as well.
I adore Girl Crazy and the overture and Embraceable You in particular. It has them all on it. Can remember the German ice skater Katerina Witt do a fabulous performance at I think the Sarajevo olympics, she won gold, and I've still the video somewhere

Katerina Witt was always so beautiful to watch
I remember being stunned watching the opening ceremony of the Los Angeles Olympic Games where there were, I don't know how many, pianists playing Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue.... it was mesmerising...

Yes becky, George wrote good music but it was Ira Gershwin who wrote ...."Who could ask for anything more?" in 'I Got Rhythm'

Just caught up today with last Tuesday's episode that featured Rodgers and Hart. Some great tracks so worth a listen if you have time.
This week's (tomorrow ) is Rodgers (same guy) and Hammerstein. I love their music so I'm sure it will be good.

Thanks Ruddlescat-had not picked that up before your post.
I don't post/spend as much time on this board as I used to-every time I post something about my favourite presenter Richard Allinson I tend to get "grief" responses so don't bother to hang around much, leaving the anti Chris Evans brigade to post their repetitive posts over and over again-yawn.
One plus point in the recent changes to the schedules etc-a heads-up on the Huey Morgan show-some really good music played-lots of songs/artists played that I have little knowledge about/have not heard before. Well worth a listen imho. |

Mark, I'm a fan of Richard who is very underused on Radio 2 but I'm very proud to be a member of the anti Chris Evans brigade
I don't post much about him now because everything that can be said has been said many times over and if some people still choose to listen then more fool them
I just vote with my radio dial by tuning to Simon Bates on Smooth every morning and actually I think his current show is better than the original version formerly on Radio 1

I'm just listening to the Jerry Herman programme now. I have loved this series and tho' I find BarryM way OTT he always has interesting things to say.
La Cage has to be one of the best musicals ever so I'm hoping for a gem or two. I saw the Menier Chocolate Factory production in London three times with Douglas Hodge playing Albin. He won a Tony for it on Broadway last year. I also love the Mack & Mabel music.
A couple of years ago I went to a recording of Friday Night is Music Night featuring Herman's music starring John Barrowman, Maria Friedmann and others. Herman had been due to appear at the Prince Edward Theatre where it was being recorded but he was too unwell to travel from the USA. However he spoke to us the audience via a radio link.

Just listening to the last episode featuring Kander and Ebb. As you say Barry is OTT but fancy living next door and hearing them putting the finishing touches to 'New York New York' through the bathroom walls!
The song always reminds me of an evening spent in a supper club in Florida in the early 80s with the English owners of the motel where we used stay. The cabaret was comedian/organist/singer who was a friend of our hosts, and a female singer who couldn't half belt out that song. It was memorable though as singer Gordon McRae was a guest of the comedian (Lenny somebody) and came on stage to sing a few bars of 'Oh What A Beautiful Morning' to huge applause. Afterwards Bill took me over to meet Lenny and Gordon Macrae who was charming!
It's been a good series.
Off to listen to Bob Dylan now, hard to believe he's 70 next week!

Not sure I get Bob Dylan but the programmes are interesting aren't they Helen...
The Bob Dylan Story on BBC6 Music is interesting(approx 10 in the series but midnight to 1am is quite late to catch them I suppose)and they only take you upto around 2001 of his life story. Worth a listen though.
I keep saying I don't know many of his songs but I probably do but covered by other artists...Roxy Music, Manfred Mann, The Byrds etc... |

I like a lot of Dylan's songs, a school friend was really into him when we were about 13/14.
I've not heard the 6 Music ones but listened to The Freewheelin that was on 2 last night. It was good!

Just listening to Rogers and Hammerstein episode re run of this series. I know it's a very recent repeat but the music is so good it's a great listen.
Not sure if they are in the same order as the original series?

Some lovely songs,as you would imagine, on this programme from the new series of They Write The Songs with Jerome Kern being the first subject....
I was surprised to find I liked Bette Midler's version of The Folks Who Live On The Hill as much as I did ..her voice sounds really lovely on it. |

I listened to this this morning whilst catching up with some ironing
Clint Eastwood is a big fan of Johnny Mercer ...a while ago he made an excellent documentary about him that was on (what else?) BBC Four. He also made a film called Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil which was set in Mercer's home town of Savannah, Georgia and partly shot in Mercer House, built by Johnny's grandfather, the accompanying soundtrack was a newly recorded collection of some of Mercer's most celebrated songs.
The opening of the film is accompanied by this beautiful performance of Skylark by k.d.lang ...

I've got a version by Doris Day, somewhere. But I do like Frank Ifield's version though. Reminds me of being a six or seven year old.
Didn't know all that stuff about Midnight In the Garden of Good and Evil, Becky. I did watch the Eastwood docu you mentioned, though. I'm assuming it must have been in that, so probably wasn't paying enough attention.
KD does a great Skylark, too.  My daughter had Ray's version of Come Rain Or Shine played at her wedding ceremony last month, as a surprise for me. Wonderful.

I missed that as well.  Have just listened to this week's with the songs of Sammy Cahn. You would never have known from the R2 page unless you looked at the playlist It was as bad in Radio Times. You would think they would know the songwriter wouldn't you........
Anyway Barry Manilow said this week's is Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley so may be good.
