As discussed on Jeremy Show:

A minister has suggested that roads should be shut off from traffic on a Sunday so children can play in them. Health Minister Ann Milton thinks this could tackle obesity.

_________

It may upset a few locals, but won't tackle obesity. A child could still go out and play with a bag or crisps and mars bar.

Mark - the link you have posted does not seem to have anything to do with the topic in question

However, I listened to JV today and find it difficult to see how this scheme can work well

What will happen is that irresponsible parents will abandon their children to play in the street causing nuisance to neighbours and the hard pressed motorist who already pays a fortune in road tax, fuel tax, VAT etc will have even less space to drive in

Local Authorities will be inundated with personal injury claims from street accidents and as someone pointed out there's a risk that a young child having played in the street on a Sunday will forget that the street is not closed off the following day and run out only to be hit by a car or even larger vehicle

We all remember with fondness when there were many less cars and it was safe for children to play in the street but alas to suggest this in 2011 is simply to live in cloud cuckoo land

I heard it too and thought it a crazy hairbrained scheme that will never work. As many pointed out they would have to give a refund on road tax if it came about.

We live in a sort of cul de sac and it can be some what annoying having kids riding their bikes over your lawn because they think they have the run of the place. There is no footpath and gardens are open plan.

We can remember when there were quiet cul de sacs of bungalows suitable for older and disabled people, but since local authorities sold them on, a lot have been privately bought and extensions and dormer bedrooms have converted them into family homes with little or no garden. The cul de sac is full of cars belonging to the owners and their adult children and the kids cause mayhem playing football. The remaining original tenants are terrified to go out - and don't get me started on trampolines in cramped back yards............ Evil or Very Mad
