The other day I went to the local supermarket and bought a tub of margarine. After I'd paid for it, the assistant scooped a bit out of the tub and told me that I couldn't expect to have all the margarine that I'd paid for.
Actually I just made that up but no doubt it will resonate with train travellers who've been told they shouldn't moan if they have to stand during journeys.

Ian,
But while 89p guarantees 500g of margarine, does the rail ticket say £4.50 guarantees a seat to Birmingham?
Does Composer of the week guarantee complete works?

They should take the seats out of the trains if it doesn't, and just put cattle-cars on.
I liked the way thay the company involved didn't dare to prosecute anyone who produced a false ticket yesterday. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

Boeing are thinking of developing a standing only area in new planes. They plan to market it to budget airlines. I'm not joking about this. They are mad. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

I've flown from Cincinatti to Cleveland and other short flights over there, less than half an hour some flights. Only 12 seats. But no standing room because the planes are so small you CAN'T stand up!

Boeing are desperately trying to claw back some of the market they've lost to Airbus in the last fifteen years. However, Airbus have also apparently been quietly pitching this idea to some of the Far Eastern carriers recently (in 2003 at least) - pax would be upright, propped up against a padded backboard, held in place with a harness. Then again, Japan Air Lines may go for it with Boeing, as they ran to capacity on some of their domestic services several years ago, having to use Boeing 747SPs (!) fitted out into cattle class to pack 'em all in.... "mind the doors"!
The New York Times ran a story back in April suggesting that the new A380 would pack in 853 pax if standing only sections were used, as opposed to 560 seated. This is clearly false, since the 560 is based on a three-class system which obviously cuts into the total seat capacity - the A380 is cleared for 863 seats if they're all at economy pitch. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

If you're in a C-130 heading into downtown Baghdad, I don't think even crossing your legs would stop the call of nature happening.... at least not if the anti-missile alarms started going off on finals! _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

A 'weekend commando' or goes 'commando' at weekends?
Rachel, have you been there recently with your job by any chance? If so, I hope they issued you with a good flak jacket. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”
