Yes starting next Monday at 11pm Bill is back with another series of his Golden Years.
Good news, but shame it's on so late. I'll have to listen on iPlayer I think.

Yes I agree Helen. I'm pleased to see it back but what a ridiculous time.
By the way, it's on Monday nights - unless it's affected by the North/South divide! |

Thanks Eileen, I've corrected it! Don't know how I got the day wrong!
I only listened to the last half of the one he did last Christmas a few weeks ago. I'd recorded it on the Sky box and was having a clear up.
I do wish they'd revert to having the documentaries earlier on in the evening rather than Jo Whiley.

I listened last night and it was great to hear Bill again and his memories of the tracks he played.
Tommy Steele, Buddy Holly, Corvettes to name a few. Made me realise how many good songs we never hear these days...........
No playlist yet though, so hope that will be remedied.

It was Eileen. I was listening in bed and had to smile when he mentioned Radio Luxembourg as I always listened in bed to that station!
I don't know if he had a cold, but I thought Bill's voice sounded even lower than usual. I heard him say there are 13 episodes so I hope the rest are as good.

It was good wasn't it...
Thanks Eileen
Bill always manages to dig out something that is new to me(even though what he playing isn't new )and on his programme unlike SOTS I don't think listeners mind an obscure track or two being played.
When in Mum's company a lot of this and other music not heard much on radio these days is on an mp3 on rota but when the player is being charged or a programme like this is on air we tend to listen together.
My favourite Radio 2 time of listening does tend to be 10pm - Midnight weeknights. Odd shows 7pm-8pm. Sundays 9pm-Midnight. Fridays 7pm-10pm and an odd concert on Thursday 9pm-10pm.
When all is well I troll around most of the other BBC networks for music or speech programming.
But I can always go back to the pc and listen to something close on 14,000 tracks which is approx 27 days of music. And I can play what the radio seems to normally ignore... |

I've just listened to this on the good old i-player and have to agree that it was excellent. It's a pity that it's on so late but what I really like about it is that Bill Kenwright so clearly enjoys the music and doesn't seem at all bothered about appearing "cool" . |

Lovely to have this programme back with it's mixture of great songs and Bill's stories about the people he knows/knew...is there anyone he didn't know?
I was in Manchester at the weekend and in the town centre a large picture of Tommy Steele was smiling down from a poster advertising him in Scrooge at The Lowry ...I can't think of a less likely Scrooge than him.....the miserable one that is! |

I think that's why I enjoy him so much. It's what he really thinks.
Great that there are 12 more episodes to come as well.

Listening to Bill talking about Joan Regan I looked her up and reading this made me think of the Leveson Inquiry.....
She married Harry Claff in 1957 who was the joint general manager and box office manager at the Palladium. In November that year, the Daily Herald reported that she was to have a baby in February of the following year [1958] - seven months after the wedding. After receiving "abusive and wounding letters from people who were personally unknown to her', Regan successfully sued the newspaper for libel, and her daughter was actually born in April.
What a poignant story he told of Save The Last Dance For Me ....a classic
Pat Boone has just brought ...for me ...the show to an end ....lovely dulcet tones |

I see that Alan Titchmarsh is to have a new programme on Classic FM ..I answered Ian's post about it and then saw yours.....it'll be interesting to see what he plays.. |

When health allowed some years ago I saw Joan Regan at the local theatre...
I also saw Pat Boone at Harrogate(amazingly that was 20+ years ago)and his support act was the Dallas Boys...
Wonderful show...
I used to see many of the people that are featured on Bill's programme, Desmond's Iconic 50's series...
I wonder why it takes ages for Radio 2 to put details up of the music played on Bill's programmes whereas details of other shows on the station appear soon afterwards...
The shows we get these days are not as appealing and there are more plays these days... |

Missed last night's show and it wasn't available on iPlayer this afternoon. I see it is now but yet again no playlist.
Makes you wonder why they can't get at least the playlist up straight away as it's obviously a pre-recorded show. Grrrh.......

Bill sounded genuinely pleased to receive the email from young Zach saying he loved the music he played ..all the more so because Zach is just 18.
After Christmas dinner myself ,my daughter and my son (admittedly neither as young as Zach) were in the kitchen washing up listening and singing along to a Brill Building CD making it a very pleasant task ...they love the songs as much as I do.....goes to show good songs endure.
This programme is a definite highlight of my listening week. |

I'd say it's mine at the moment as well Becky and I really enjoyed last night's. Bill always seems delighted to have listener's comments.
One of last night's highlight's for me was Lesley Gore's You Don't Own Me, a song I've always liked.

I can't believe how quickly the weeks are going with this series Becky. I must record this week's from iPlayer.
My newish radio allows you to stream music from your PC so I'm just getting to grips with that feature. I'm looking forward to listening to some of the first series again, in the kitchen.

Talking of radios,Helen, I'm loking round for a reasonably priced Dab radio for the bedroom ...the one I have in there at the moment in steadily losing it's volume which is very annoying to say the least... ..never happened with the old type of radio.... |

I don't think any of the radios are as good as those bought say 20 years ago Becky. My only radio which has Dab on it is the Roberts one which does internet as well. I didn't really want Dab but it came with it and I try to use the FM mode whenever I can. I wondered about one for the bedroom but the dials are so bright it would keep you awake at night.

Helen, if you're talking about the Roberts iStream, you can dim the blue display considerably for bedside use... _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

I played with the display when I first got it Helen and I thought you could set three levels of brightness then, adjust the brightness and contrast too?
I might be wrong though...
I wanted to have an internet radio by the bedside but the "Sleep" function on the Roberts is too awkward to reach via the menu so I use it in the garage instead!
I still love it... I was listening to US "Old Time Radio" yesterday.. a dectective story followed by some great music from the old days. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

I must have another look at it SF. I'm not sure if I'd go for another internet radio for the bedroom but it is a fantastic set.
I would like to have one that can record but I don't think you can get the Roberts one anymore. I wouldn't go for a Pure one as I couldn't get Dab on it when I tried one a couple of years ago.

Yes, that's the one let down with the iStream, the lack of a record facility.
I have my two other Roberts radios with record and again, they are just so good!
Many a time whilst in the bathroom in the morning, the Evans factor gets too much and I flick on to SOTS... so much better.. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

It's the Roberts RD 41... a silver unit about the size of the old Bush portable radio. The "Sound Card" will record about 25 hours.. I've never checked it but it must be at least that, maybe more.
I use a 2Gb card.
Great little radio but the bass response isn't too good past half way.. it booms thereafter.
It's one of the few things I've bought over recent years which I've been completely happy with! _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

I thought that was the one SF but I don't think you can get it any more . I may try and phone Roberts to see if they are bringing out a new model.

I'm listening to it now Becky. Some great 'Liverpool' tracks which I always associate with the Beatles and other Mersey groups.

H | Agreed,Helen...and it didn't improve any when Marie Osmond sang it did it?
Loved the ingenious way Bill dealt with the problem of P.J. Proby if he didn't turn up to perform for his show each night. |

I'm not sure he'll be back for a 3rd series although he did say he 'hoped' there would be one a few weeks back. Someone I know had a mention on Monday's show.
