Another increase in Radio 2's listeners. If these numbers were repeated at a General Election.....Chris Evans would be Prime Minister! |

Wishful thinking, H?
Mark's link is actually the report for this time last year.
This is today's...
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-21265799
...Better than just "steady as she goes", and good news for both of the adult pop music channels.

I'm aware the thread was started for last years figures Ron, but I've read about the latest ones in today's paper.
It seems Grimshaw is losing listeners to Evans, as I said in my earlier post.

I've only just given the numbers a perfunctory glance but it looks to me like Radio 2's numbers are up in general not just at breakfast time. The reason for this is the population is getting older, I don't mean as individuals but as an average- so there are more people of an age when Radio 2 is the sort of thing you want. It will carry on like that for about another thirty years before it starts to go the other way but by then most of us will be brown bread anyway.
I've spent the day clearing out mum in law's house- well some of it. I have, it seems discovered the secret to a long ( She's 91) and happy life. It's biscuits, or more specifically, tins of biscuits. Clearing out the kitchen cupboards I found biscuit tin after biscuit tin, something around thirty tins ( I didn't count them), in the kitchen, going back years- tins that I can remember from my childhood- all of them stuffed full of useless objects, those things that look like they might come in handy one day but you can never find them again. Then in the garage piles of even older biscuit tins, maybe another twenty, then in the wardrobes upstairs - so many I didn't have the life in me to open any more of them, one wardrobe full of nothing else but biscuit tins- all of them full of stuff. Interestingly and here's the thing that lead to my conclusion: none of the tins had biscuits in them! |

Radio 1's shift in emphasis to target younger listeners will undoubtedly have had an affect, although there are many commercial stations which might have gained more from that than Radio 2 which, despite the criticism from some quarters that it plays too much current chart music, is definitely aimed at the more mature ear. They don't appear to have done so.
Biscuit tins were the ideal storage package, being relatively small and airtight. My mum has loads of them as well. None of them are labelled, but she knows what's in all of them. Or rather, she says she does. _________________ Ron |

I hope they don't take the 14% increase in digital listening as an excuse to hasten the demise of FM. |

Oh, Mrs W (early 50s) has started on these. Quite a few in our garage, mostly empty, though there is one full of rubber bands! and quite a few around the house, in the dining room there's a Roses' and a McVities and they have cake in them, some sort of cake that she puts rum in! _________________ -

I'm guessing Evans has attracted listeners who have drifted over from Radio 1 since Moyles left? |

Why oh why is Chris Evans' grinning face fronting the news about the latest RAJAR figures when he LOST listeners? Is there no escaping from him? |

Because overall Radio 2 listening is UP and he's the highest-rating presenter on the network. And he only lost 50,000, which is probably within the margin of error anyway. |

I think that's fairly certain, plus all the others who now see R2 as the old R1. They have changed the demographic of R2 and it will get worse. |

Latest figures are out, and pretty unremarkable.
Evans is down on the last quarter, but still up on this time last year. He now has 9.35m, compared to 8.55m in the same period last year.
Overall Radio 2's weekly audience has gone from 13.9m a year ago to 14.9m now, although it has fallen from it's 15.4m last quarter (suggesting Evans drop is part of a trend rather than his show specifically).
Over on Radio 1, Nick Grimshaw is still shedding listeners - losing 1.3m in a year. |

I sometimes wonder what would life be like without radio 2? Probably quiet, I conclude, but then, I remember my life before I listened to radio 2, and it was quite wild. Then I think, perhaps radio 2 is a national sedative, they make a noise, so we don't have to, and then I just think no one really cares. You put the radio on, it makes a noise, you switch it off, the noise stops. It's so quiet at times, I can hear my blood pumping through my eardrums, boom, boom-boom, boom boom-boom etc...even radio silence can be a loud scream, so it's better just to leave the radio on, chuntering away in the corner like a Hampster on a wheel, a companion working its socks off for little more than food, water, fresh sawdust, and the occasional tickle under the chin. |

That's exactly the point I have made in the past Xanadu
People tend to leave their radios on simply because for some reason these days most of them seem totally incapable of handling the concept of silence which means that one shouldn't read too much into these type of figures quite simply because most don't listen because of the quality or otherwise of individual presenters - they just need some kind of background noise in order to relax them _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

In audio circles, the technical definition of "noise" is the unwanted component of a sound source (as in "signal-to-noise ratio"). Just bear that in mind when contemplating much of today's radio output! |

Radio 2 must be doing something right even though they sometimes have some annoying people to cover shows. I suppose they don't get counted as it's worked out when the regulars are on their shows. |

Exactly! And what "competitors" do exist are almost completely robotic - and sound like it (just listen to Smooth for evidence).
There's no real competition to R2 - on FM or DAB at least. There's plenty via web streams, of course, but that's not so accessible for many people. It's what I listen to most of the time. |

A record 9.2 Million tune to Chris Evans Breakfast show in the latest listener figures. I don't think he can really get anymore listeners. Must be doing something right.

The much talked about London battle between local commercial stations remains the same, but all stations have lost listeners this quarter.
Capital is still the only commercial station with over two million listeners, as second place Kiss drops from 1.97m to 1.75m weekly listeners. Based on reach, Magic remains in third place and Heart in fourth.
On ‘the other side’ at the BBC, Radio 4 now has over three million listeners in London alone, up from 2.5m last quarter, followed by Radio 2 with 2.3m.
London Weekly Reach – all stations
1. BBC Radio 4 (3.025m)
2. BBC Radio 2 (2.389m)
3. Capital FM (2.156m)
4. Kiss (1.825m)
5. Magic (1.756m)
6. BBC Radio 1 (1.596m)
7. Heart (1.557m)
8. Classic FM (1.306m)
9. BBC Radio 5 live (1.296m)
10. LBC (958,000) |

He could get one more listener - me. But hell will freeze over before I start listening to the annoying creep!
Radio 4's "Today" programme is much more fun at that time of the day. |

He's short of another one Colin - me.
I'm waiting for them to introduce a 'voice recognition muting button' on my radio. His would be the first to go on to it.

Such a button would be working overtime, Helen, given the number of times "that voice" crops up in trails for "500 Words" during each and every day! There's no escape. |

I remember when the RAJARS were a big deal - now I can't tell if they're run-of-the-mill and expected, or just not worth bothering with.
Anyway...
Evans gets 9.8m listeners (500,000 up on previous quarter), with Radio 2 on a new high of 15.5m
Radio 4 has gone up to 11.2m, with the Today programme also rising 5% to 7.1m
Radio 1 is on 10.94m, with Grimshaw rising 700,000 to 6.3m
5 Live up to 6.28m
Radio 3 down 1.6% to just under 2 million. Must be all that dumbed down populist programming they do. |

Rajars are undoubtedly important to radio industry people because they help to determine whether people keep their jobs and whether radio licences have a saleable value or not.
Personally, I reckon it all shows what a desperately bad state British over-air radio is in at the moment. We have more stations - and very little choice. |

Rajars tell us nothing about the quality of British radio in 2014 - they are simply a reflection of the lack intelligence on the part of large numbers of listeners these days coupled with the effects of constant trailers and advertising which direct most of those types of people to tune in to a particular show solely because they have been bombarded with and sometimes brainwashed by such forms of advertising
If someone is asked the question as to which particular shows they regularly 'listen to' the chances are they will answer truthfully - but it begs the question as to whether they are actually 'listening' or rather simply using the radio as background noise as these days some people for reasons incomprehensible to me seem incapable of dealing with the concept of silence _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

It's not just "shows" - it's outlets. Even though I prefer to listen to music-based programming first thing in the morning, I resort to the speech-based Today programme on Radio 4 simply because there's no alternative to the Chris Evans self-obsessed cackle on Radio 2 that satisfies me. I hate the spread of "Radio by Numbers" stations like Smooth, and although 6Music is much, much better than R2 in so many ways, I find it a bit heavy-going first thing in the day.
In the good old days, there used to be Independent Local Radio, but politicians, network companies and regulators have colluded to destroy what was set up in 1973 and other than the smaller community licences it's all the same. Here in MK we have a new local DAB licensee, but even their presenters are simply apeing Radio 1 in an attempt to get noticed - and then head-hunted!
I welcome a time when 4G becomes much cheaper to use because then we'll have cheap access to a whole truckload of web-based alternatives, but until then it's not financially viable. |

I agree, you get a choice of R1, R2 and 6music breakfast shows which are all similar and as bad as each other, I have to choose R4.
Bring back R2 |

It's RAJAR time again!
In short: record audience for Radio 2... again
Station: 15.6m
Chris Evans: 9.83m
Ken Bruce: 8.4m
Steve Wright: 8.2m
Graham Norton: 4.3m
On Radio 5 Live yesterday, Richard Bacon and Tony Blackburn mentioned that Brian Matthews Sounds of the 60s gets "around 8m" listeners - "the biggest show no-one's heard of" said Bacon, referring to how no-one ever mentions how huge it is.
I just wish with these ratings and the Station of the Year Award that R2 would be a bit more experimental but that seems increasingly unlikely.
In other news, Grimshsaw has now lost 1.1m of Moyles listeners, which is apparently a good thing because they were all old.
Radio 3 is up (slightly), Radio 5 and 4 are down slightly. 6 Music down on previous quarter but up 6.3% year on year.

I'm staggered that Radio 2 is adding to its audience numbers given that so much of the station's output is utter crap. I guess that what I want from radio differs hugely from about 9 million of my fellow UK citizens! I probably listen to no more than 4-6 hours of R2's output each week now. |

Ra-Ra-RAJAR!
Radio 2 now has 15.5 million listeners, up slightly from the 15.44 million a year ago, but down slightly on the last quarter
Chris Evans - 9.91m!
Sadly, Radio 3's audience has dropped and with 1.88m now lags behind 6Music's 1.98m. Radio 4 has dropped again to 10.53m, and Grimmy is on 5.97m (up from 5.87m a year ago!)
So Radio 2 is, er, the Number 2 station in the land according to some reports. Some outlets are choosing to bunch together all of Global's stations, and they have 21m listeners across the country. So, just when you were thinking Radio 2's rating was the most depressing stat of the day... |

I'm not surprised that Global's stats are being combined, given that all of the affiliated stations derive the vast majority of their daily output from the same network server.
As for Radio 2's figures, I can only say that I'm staggered at how people can be so easily pleased by such increasingly banal output. Each to his/her own, eh? |

It may well be the rise of Global to blame. As more and more local stations become homogenized and samey, perhaps audiences are looking for something similar but with more identity and fewer ads? |

I'm sure you're right, although the huge range of alternatives now available on web-based delivery platforms is quite capable of filling the void. The output of Global is truly appalling, I'll agree. |

It perhaps the listeners are easily pleased with Evans somewhat childish output in certain parts of his show. It's doesn't mean quantity does not equal quality. -" ( The Sun is also the best selling newspaper) it just shows how really dumbed down the nation is.
The licence fee allows the BBC the monopoly on this type of breakfast show, realistically Evans has no competition. Still doesn't beat some of the London stations.
At the end of the day. It's all handed on a silver plate for him. |
