Long time since we had a post on this thread..........

Have been doing a bit of tidying up among my music related stuff of late and put a mini disc into the player with the title only of J Walker and the date somewhat obscured.

Have spent the last hour (having our tea at the same time) listening to a Friday Drivetime show. Music great, Martin Shankelman on the business (US dollar rate given as 1.66....) Mystery Voice not guessed at £70 and Cruisin' just about to start.

Great listening to Johnnie and Sally Traffic of course and the whole thing sounding almost too grown up even to be on on Radio 4............ O/H's comment 'that's what you need a bit of business chat and good music' if only those in charge would take heed..... Maybe I'll send them a copy to remind them of how good Radio 2 was then. It was summer and Wimbledon was starting the next week with Greg Rusedski still playing according to the sports guy.

PS Richard Allinson is off from Magic Drive this week doing breakfast instead hence my not having anything to listen to!

Listening to Richard Allinson tonight playing Temptations' 'My Girl' tonight and remembering seeing them live at the Talk Of The Town with my Dad while on a trip to London (I must have bribed him to see the Temptations !) then I realised that it's exactly 50 years ago, almost to the day. We were at the the catering exhibition which was at Olympia every January.......

Nice memory of my Dad.

I have a camera nest box and a blue tit has just about completed her nest. She spends the night in there now. I check each morning to see if the first egg has been laid. Early this evening I saw a blue tit pulling at bits of the fluffy wool I have dangling from the bird pole, she flew up into a tree, I switched the TV channel over to watch the nest box and she flew in to settle it in place Smile

A great tit has been in and out of the very old nest box and most mornings I hear the sound of beak on wood as she rummages around.

Now there are 8 baby blue tits and both parents are busy feeding them.

Also I have seen house sparrows taking nesting material into the old nest box.

The ninth and last egg finally hatched a few days after the others and it is amazing to compare this newest baby with the others. They develop so quickly. Still, this tiny one seems pretty feisty so I am hopeful it will do OK.

I've probably mentioned elsewhere that I'm going through tapes belonging to my late Dad that have bits of him playing piano, organ or accordion. Well this afternoon I found a reel to reel tape with a note that his playing began around 150 (not sure if that's feet or what!).

I duly wound on a bit and heard what was obviously a radio broadcast then the announcement that next was of 'MRS DALE'S DIARY'.......... after a minute or so my Dad's piano playing began. I had to smile as I've no idea why he would have recorded that! Must have been in the 50s.

My Mum used to listen when I was a child, was it on the Home Service or the Light Programme?

That's a real find, H! Some of my earliest memories are sitting on the floor, listening to Mrs Dale's Diary with my Mum. Mr Dale was Jim, as I recall. I liked it, too and I wouldn't have even been five years old. Hang on...I'll have a Google, but before I do, I also remember when Jessie Matthews (I didn't know who she was at the time) took over the part of Mrs Dale from the previous one.

Oh blimey. That was in 1963! I do remember them replacing it with Wagonners Walk (an early example of the Beeb meddling where it shouldn't), which my Mum wasn't best pleased about!

Oh gawd...wish I hadn't googled now. They changed it to The Dales in 1962, as the powers that be (and ever will be) decided that it was too old fashioned. Ring any bells? Hmmmmm.

Anyway, glad you found some more of your Dad's ivory tinkling. My Mum was a piano player as well and I would give anything to be able to hear her playing again, as I was 11 when we moved and the beautiful piano we had, was sold. I know it broke her heart, but don't think she ever let on to my Dad. Even more so, now I know what great therapy playing an instrument is for the soul.

Wasn't it radio 2's predecessor The Light Programme? As I remember, it was an insert within a larger programme. rather like a group or singer might be fitted in on a BBC TV show (I don't mean music shows like Top Of The Pops) I also recall when it was replaced by Waggoners Walk. I do wonder if those who decided to name part of a new development near where I live 'Waggoners Walk' remember when it was on the radio!

It was on the Light Programme, yes. I forgot to mention that, because of waffling on!

I think it was a stand alone 15 minute programme, but I could be wrong.

Guess what. I was right! Luckily, there is BBC Genome, which holds Radio Times archives, so I've just randomly picked one from 1959 and Mrs Dales Diary was on twice a day, which I remember - the morning one was from the previous afternoon and the other one a new afternoon episode. And I remember Edmundo Ros doing Housewives' Choice! Happy days!

Thanks for doing the digging Raver! I listened again as I was doing the re-recording yesterday and it was definitely Mrs Dales Diary which helps me date that tape. I also recall it being on twice a day! I think this must have been the afternoon one as it sounded as if the programme it followed was a play or something. It would have been music in the morning and it was a stand alone programme as well.

I can remember the ending of Waggoners Walk happening when I was just starting to listen to R2 in the late 70s. I somehow got into Jimmy Young's show when I was off work for a week or so. I started to listen regularly depending on which shift I was working. From memory it came on just before JY came on so I sometimes heard a bit of it.

Strange how our brains take in what is going on around us when we were probably doing other things at such a young age. I know I used to paint or draw as Mum listened to the radio. I remember Housewives Choice too!

Got nearly all my tapes re done. Yesterday I found him playing 'As Time Goes By', starting as you'd expect to hear it played then giving it a bit of a 'swing' as he did with most things he played. Even if the tapes weren't labelled I'd know it was him!

What a wonderful thing, hearing your Dad play As Time Goes By from all those years ago. Money couldn't buy that. It must have stirred up all kinds of feelings.

Those old Light Programme memories have always been quite vivid in my mind. It must have been pre-school or very close. Music While You Work, Woman's Hour, while probably the tune I remember the most, that as stayed with me all these years, is Housewives Choice.

And for some reason (and it would be one of my Desert Island Discs) is Elizabethan Serenade, so it must have been played a fair bit, back then. Written by good old Ronald Binge, who also wrote Sailing By, which is played at the end of R4 every night. One thing I did accidentally find out about him, was that he arranged Mantovani's music, before setting out on his own.

I wish I'd found a machine that transferred tape to CD a few years ago, Eileen. I used to have loads of cassettes. Still got a fair few, but in the main, I've replaced them with a CD version. I shpuld imagine that it's quite fun searching through all those tapes.

The original reason why I bought a computer many years ago, was to record to CDs. The internet was a mystery to me. Now, everything you want, music wise, is at the touch of a key or a click of the mouse. I do miss rifling through CDs and before that, records, which was a big passion from my schooldays. I would spend hours in record shops. It's quite sad really, how almost all record shops have disappeared forever.

But not long before all this, I bought a 4 CD box set of all Light Programme favourites. I can't remember quite where, but I suspect it was a bargain that I couldn't resist. There are a few duffers on there - Eamonn Andrews take a bow - but it has all of the themes of the time. And you can still get it, I was surprised to find. Even Amazon don't have it. A bargain at £5.99!

Right now I'm listening to a recording of Alan Titchmarsh dated Jan 2006. His opening track was the theme from Murder On The Orient Express, a track I really love.

I'm having a tidy up in my office/sewing room otherwise known as the box room so it's nice easy listening!
