Do Sally & Lynn actually answer the phones themselves? If they spend 10-15 minutes in the studio each hour, do the phones just ringout until Sally gets back to her desk?

Have you ever phoned the traffic line? I have, If it's not answered you can leave a voice message. I reckon they do answer the phones themselves, but I think the morning news person on Wogans show helps as he or she has people gathering the news for them. It's busy that time of day and know doubt Sally has a helping hand. I suppose Bobby does get a hand at the weekends if it's busy?

I suppose they should have a system if there is a traffic problem text Traffic' at the start of your message and it would go to the right person?

I think Sally and Lynne have an assistant to help with calls. He used to stand in for them when they were off, but I don't think he was well-liked so he just helps out behind-the-scenes.

I don't believe they're helped out by the newsreaders, but Lynne does prepare the reports for Fran, Boggy and Deadly on Wogan's show.

I have no idea if the different networks share info, but I guess not as they work out of different offices.

Not too sure if they share news, but my significant other calls the local radio station from time to time (he drives to work) and it's always answered by the presenter/travel person and broadcast.
None too sure if the BBC would want a report on B road happenings, although a Lady slipped on the ice outside the health food shop today, heard about that one.

It's amazing how the station dosn't use Real -time from highways agency, but I suppose they like using the local knowledge to get the listeners on board?

Its a sign that the BBC has too much money when they can afford their own set up for local radio, 5 live and Radio 2.

Well traffic news was introduced at the end of last year on two in the peek times afternoons. Why was this introduced after all this time? We never seem to get this type of information told to us.

If you put your RDS on you will pick up local traffic news anyway and commercial radio do it all the time.

There is some people asking on anyother radio forum why Radio 1 dont introduce traffic to their breakfast show? I thought the station was a national network to provide things for all listeners?

I bet the BBC do use Real-time (whatever that is) but like to make the reports more personal by using callers.

Because most of Radio 1's target audience don't drive? And, really, they should just focus on the music.

From what I gather from other people Moyles has trouble doing that.

At the risk of being sent to bed with no supper, I offer the following:

Maybe Radio 1 doesn't bother with traffic etc because you don't need Traffic report for your

Pram
Skateboard
Hoodie
(the) Peugeot 205 that you've just nicked and intend to drive the wrong way through the local one-way system.
Scooter
gang hanging out by the local chippie

I get a strange satisfaction from the travel news, living as I do ( most of the time anyway) in Dorset ... there's something very warming, while stood with my bottom against the Arga in my kitchen, on a cold, dark, wet, January evening hearing about a 20 mile tailback on the M25 or the M6 Thirwall viaduct .. ( I love the way Sally says Thirwall Viaduct) ......and operation Stack, always makes me smile..... I think to myself - especially on a Friday..(when I 've been home baking since 14:00) ... listening to Drivetime .... I think.... mmmmmmm that used to be me... in that there queue........but not anymore....... you know, we don't even have a Motorway in Dorset.......... .... so travel news is not just for the travellers..... it can bring a warm glow to all of us in a sort of, mild schadenfreude way...... Smile

Elegently put, Rachel. Although I still have to travel to work, there's usually no problems on the bit of the M62 that I use. Knowing that there's some poor soul stuck at Clackett Lane services makes me think I'm glad I live outside the M25.

I think that Sarah was in the doghouse with Lynn this am. Poor Lynn trying to tell folks about the wind in Scotland , and Sarah playing the wind in the background, and then Lynn telling the Sarah that there was no more wind to report. Me thinks that Sarah should stop playing with the wind during the travel reports. Laughing

Naughty Sarah! Come and sit on the naughty step with me! Evil or Very Mad

Yes its really amusing to play sound effects while traffic accidents involving people being seriously or fatally injured are being reported.
