On Pick Of The Pops this afternoon, 1977 section, Genesis' 'Pigeons' from their Spot The Pigeon EP. Made a change from 'Match Of The Day' that is usually heard, great as that track is.

And earlier on this morning, Richard Allinson played 'Hide In Your Shell' by Supertramp. All too rarely heard on the radio.

Track of the day for me today has to be 'Angel Eyes' by Abba played as the opening track on the JV Show
Of course it was one side of a double 'A' Side single back in the late seventies - the other track being 'Voulez Vous' - and the latter gets played regularly not just on Radio 2 but on other Commercial stations whilst 'Angel Eyes' hardly ever sees the light of day
With the exception of 'The Winner Takes It All' probably the best track Abba ever recorded in my view

I'm sorry Ruddles but playing songs like that is the reason why I think Radio 2 should be heavily criticised for playing unchallenging, predictable, banal pap in their Mon-Fri 9 to 5 output. But what do you expect from Jeremy Vine?
Don't get me wrong, I like Abba (SOS, Fernando, and some good album tracks) but really feel we have enough Abba, Queen, Madonna on Radio 2.
And if KB plays the bloody Pet Shop Boys again....

| Back in the day when I was into Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, King Crimson and stuff, I sneakily bought Abba's "SOS" without admitting it to my cool mates. I still have it and it's a superb example of 1970s pop-rock that sounds even better now. If a group ever came close to the Beatles as pop innovators it must surely be Abba! |

The problem is that the playout server is loaded with a minimum selection of tracks by a given artist, so they don't always have the freedom to choose.
That said, I can 't ever see someone like the late, great John Peel putting up with that! |

I don't think John Walters gets the credit he deserves with that partnership.

I actually saw Abba at Wembley Arena in November 1979 and very good they were too. 'Knowing Me Knowing You' is a classic which The Beach Boys would have been proud of (though I now think of Alan Partridge when I hear it). Great lyrics, harmonies, tune, the perfect song.
I agree Colin, they were nearly as innovative as The Beatles. Another group who could have been the new Beatles (or so I thought at the time) were the excellent 10cc, certainly 1972-76, they disappointed after that. But that's for another thread. |

I saw them on what I assume was the same tour at Manchester Opera House
Probably the most professional performance I've ever seen if you like live music to virtually replicate the recorded version - I can't really criticise it but for me while I really enjoyed it there was a slight lack of the atmosphere usually associated with live gigs - nevertheless I'm really glad I went

Schiz, I saw 10cc play support to the Rolling Stones and Lynrd Skynnrd at Knebworth in 1976! They were bloody awful (they got booed by a crowd impatient for the Stones) but on record I thought they were completely brilliant. I still think Rubber Bullets is one of the cleverest singles ever and the album that contains "I'm Mandy, Fly Me " (I'm on my iphone in front of the telly right now ) was and is a masterpiece.
Interestingly, like the 1970s Abba, I don't think 10cc ever achieved "cool" status , did they? |

It was a hot day and they were the days when outdoor festivals were badly organised. Things were running really late through the day and the crowd was getting impatient . 10cc's set wasn 't bad but was marred by a crap PA and when they performed "I'm Not In Love" (which seemed totally inappropriate to the " rock " festival) the audience booed on realising that the multi - layered backing was playing from tape loops.
One thing though - when the Stones eventually came on very late they were absolutely fabulous. The sky was clear as the sun set and they made up for the earlier cock-ups by giving it their all. I still think it's the best gig I've ever seen.
Well, either that or Michael Jackson at Milton Keynes Bowl. Or Queen at Plymouth Guildhall circa 1974. Or...... or........! |

Ken Bruce plays good record, shock horror!!
I couldn't believe it. I only listen to KB as background (like most people probably) but all of a sudden, amidst all the drivel (Pet Shop Boys again), he plays the brilliant 'Under My Thumb' by The Rolling Stones, from the Aftermath album of 1966. It was actually played yesterday but it's taken me a day to recover.
I can imagine KB, at the end of a long week and fed up with the dreadful gay pop disco that Gary Bones forces him to play, finally losing it and shouting 'for God's sake, Gary dear, play a DECENT song for just once'. And it worked. |

Had I been listening I too would have been shocked! It's one of my favourite Stones numbers.

Yes it is beyond reason now Colin, and I really can't understand how the people in charge don't monitor what's going on and do something about it.
The sandwich shop in Huntingdon, and Cash Converters both used to listen to Radio 2 and now don't, when I asked why both of them said "Because they keep playing the same records over and over". Such a shame.
I was totally shocked when he played "Under My Thumb" too Schizoid!!
Normally when I hear a great song on Ken's show, I look at the time and it's nearly always 11.45 and had been picked on tracks of my years. |

Funnily enough, Gazmando, when I heard Under My Thumb I assumed it WAS Tracks Of My Years and looked at my watch. It was only 11.30.

Surprised you have not heard that before, it was one of my favourites from the 80's and it makes me smile every time I hear it.
This was her only big hit I think, she sadly died very young. |

'Out In The Fields' Phil Lynott & Gary Moore
A superb rock track which proves beyond any doubt that Gary is not just a boring blues guitarist - he's up there with the best in the front line of rock music
