It must have been my imagination Colin as it was a few seconds shorter than that!

Even bigger geek alert - it was written about a young Beatles fan - Patti Boyd - has anyone had more songs written about them ?? _________________ Standing on Ray Moore's shoulders |

Not one but five tracks of the day for me today. On Steve Wright's oldies:
The rarely played 'No Reply' from The Beatles.
'If You Could Read My Mind', Gordon Lightfoot
'Badge', Cream
'Man Of The World', Fleetwood Mac
'If You're Looking For A Way Out', Odyssey.
Great stuff. |

Are you sure of that?
George Harrison first met Patti Boyd when A Hard Day's Night was being filmed IIRC in early 1964, I had a copy of Please Please Me in 1963...............

I got my info from an old interview with John Lennon (whose memory at the time - like mine - may have been compromised).
You are probably right, but it seemed logical at the time.
Back to the topic heading however - Janice Long tonight played Mott the Hoople's "Golden Age of Rock and Roll" - magic. _________________ Standing on Ray Moore's shoulders |

Yes, that's the well-documented story, Helen. In fact, she's clearly visible on the train interior scenes in the film and that's where George first set eyes on her.
A former work colleague of my wife's went to boarding school with her in (I think) Hertfordshire. She was a Beatles fan, of course, but they didn't know it until she turned up for the film shoot. |

As I've not heard it in decades and it brought a smile to my face as I was puzzling over some sewing, my track of the day is Terry Wogan's 'Floral Dance' played as the opening track on Dermot's show.
It also took me back to my childhood when my Mum and great aunt and I followed the band one evening in the Cornish seaside town(?) where she lived.

H | I think it's always been deemed uncool,in some circles, if you like the Floral Dance but it's always brought a smile to my face,Helen, and I haven't got the lovely memory attached to it that you have. |

But then you should remember that it would have been no 1 back in 1977 had it not been kept off by another track that really escapes me ('Mull Of Kintyre'?) And, if I remember correctly, Sir Terry's version didn't do so badly at the time either! As I recall, Arthur Mullard & Hilda Baker's version of 'You're The One That I Want' also had a Top 30 placing at the time. Maybe not so much musical snobery around in the 1970s? _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

Indeed. That's the joy of the BBC Four TOTP repeats for me - all these different styles rubbing shoulders. Compare to the recent Christmas TOTP when they ignored what's actually selling in large numbers in favour of cool stuff, and you realise the world of pop is a much more dreary and sadder place than it used to be. |

Absolutely, in some quarters LEE, but the point I was making is that the fact that it (The Floral Dance) was popular was the very reason why some 'cool' people thought it was uncool to like it. |

These records charted when someone had to buy them - not downloads. I recently heard that a platinum disc is now issued for 750,000 sales - anyone else remember when it was the norm for the Beatles' forthcoming single to sell 1,000,000 in advance of release - a regular occurrence. _________________ Standing on Ray Moore's shoulders |

Nice to hear something by Fleetwood Mac mk 1 as today's bluesy showstopper. As usual it was only pt 1. Shame they couldn't fit pt 2 in! _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

Covered by the New Seekers in 1972.
I've looked at the 'music played' and Harry Chapin's song has been left out!

And he cut it short at the end. The JW of the 60s and 70s would never have cut short a song.
This show is really just a feeble excuse to play non stop Blondie and The Eagles. |

I think he'd like to play more edgy stuff and more album tracks (as he should) but is constrained by the timing of the show, Sunday afternoon, when the great British public prefer middle of the road content, as in Paul O'Grady. |

Well of course his show used to be scheduled for 5pm on Sunday afternoon until it was moved in order to accommodate the truly awful Mr O'Grady whose style causes me to turn off my radio instantly
In the current culture which prevails within Radio 2 as we all know decent knowledgeable presenters like JW sadly take a back seat to boring untalented celebrities and the present situation on Sundays in general sadly reflects this _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Absolutely no doubt about my choice for today - it has to be 'Hurry Up Harry' by Sham 69 requested on the Drivetime All Request Show this evening
It is so rarely played on radio these days I'd almost forgotten Jimmy Percy's superb and amusing over the top Cockney vocal style not to mention a quality keyboards performance not usually associated with punk bands - well apart from the Stranglers
IMHO we need to hear much more of this band on BBC Radio - but we were certainly treated tonight - with a little played Undertones track as a bonus _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

I like that song too, Helen. In fact, O'Leary does play some good music which you don't often hear.
Today's track for me, already alluded to on the SOTS thread: It Came Out Of The Sky by Creedence Clearwater Revival. |

Maybe he's mellowing! I often leave it on in the background after POTP when I'm just pottering around and as you say all of a sudden a gem pops up and you retune your ears.

PS Got to add another one, from Liza's show, from those Liverpool Lads or specifically George 'You Like Me Too Much And I Like You' from Help! _________________ 88 - 91 FM this is Radio 2 from the BBC!

Probably not but hells teeth - you wait around ten years or more for a Sham 69 track on Radio 2 - and then two come along in two days - 'Questions And Answers' being played on POTP this lunchtime
Wickedly good
What's the betting that JW might play 'If The Kids Are United' tomorrow afternoon _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

A day late but yesterday's was Things We Said Today from the Beatles of course on Liza Tarbuck's show. I've always loved that track.
Liza really cheered me up after a not so good week, especially when she collapsed into laughter about something, I think it may have been someone falling off an exercise bike whilst watching TV......... The topic was have you ever injured yourself while watching TV!

Had I heard that show then my track of yesterday would also have come from Liza's show. It would have been 'No Better Place' by Fountains Of Wayne. It's from the album Welcome Interstate Managers. What a great album it is. There is much more to it than it's best known track (Stacey's Mum) 'No Better Place': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjwQJu8cypo _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

Cracklin' Rosie by Neil Diamond played by Johnnie Walker on SOT70s just now.
This song always reminds me of Johnnie and his show then on Radio 1 between 9 and 10 on weekdays. I used to hear the show on my way to work (I started at 10 am) and he played it a lot. It was the first song by Neil Diamond that I'd heard and it's still one of my favourites today.

I too think Cracklin' Rosie's a great song. Unfortunately it's the only Neil Diamond song I like!
A hit in December 1970, it was his first UK success, though he did write some hits in the 60s, eg I'm A Believer by The Monkees, which I also dislike! |
