Thought we could have a thread that can be added to when you hear a track that sort of makes your day. You may not hear one everyday but if and when you do, tell us!
Mine for today has been Girl From Ipanema - Astrid Gilberto and Stan Getz which was the jazzy show stopper on Drive tonight. Perfect for a summer's evening.

Funnily enough Helen that track was the subject of a question on Eggheads shown this evening - don't know whether anyone saw it - the question was what type of music track was it - the correct answer being 'Bosa Nova' which I'm pleased to say I got right as did the contestant 
Many years since I've heard the track and not really my bag but it's funny how things stick in the mind

I'm not sure about making my day, and I'm going to cheat here, cos I didn't actually hear it at the time (being asleep) but the one track (apart from Gilberto/Getz) which would have made me prick up my ears was the last one played by Vanessa Feltz...

I know it's nothing new - he takes great care to record it the old fashioned way (tape) and it all sounds authentically 1950s - and you could say that the rockabilly/swing revival (Imelda May, Caro Emerald) is yesterday's fad, but it sounded good enough to make me investigate his album, Signs and Signifiers.

Completely excellent Ron... just my sort of thing! didn't they do a piece on him a while back on Radio 2? I'm sure they did..

Whisperin Bob played Dimes and Nickels a few weeks back which kicked me off in the direction of Signs and Signifiers as well. Worth the effort.

I think that JD McPherson track is excellent too, it sounds like a long lost classic to me.
I enjoyed Summer Breeze by Seals and Croft played by Steve Wright today, I'd never heard their version until a couple of years ago but I think it's excellent.
Was going to pick Sister Golden Hair, also played by Wrighty, it was a hard choice.
Not a Radio 2 track but I heard a great little tune on The Sweeney yesterday and found out it was used as the theme tune for Rugby Special on the BBC.

I believe the songs are all his own. Can't tell for certain because there's very little info on the net as yet. I've ordered the CD and will say if they're not.

It was nice to hear that Floyd track today, Colin.
Chris Evans played Long Shot Kick De Bucket by The Pioneers today, great to hear that on the radio. |

I remember him playing that years ago, back in the days when the JV show had its own BBC message board. Everyone thought it great!
Not had the radio on much today so nothing really stood out apart from that one.

It has just arrived. Only one song is an oldie, and that is "Country Boy", the first success from the pens of Felice and Boudleaux Bryant (who went on to write for the Everlys, and the classic Love Hurts) - it was a country hit in the US in 1948 for Little Jimmy Dickens.
One more song, "Your Love (All That I'm Missing) was written by Joey Simeone of fellow modern rockabilly band The Bellfuries. All the others are originals.

My track of the day ....What A Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong...(Tony just played it) always brings back happy memories of my Dad ..he loved this song and was often heard singing and whistling it.
(A close second, Young Girl by Gary Puckett & The Union Gap...love his voice and this song) |

Reminds me of boiling hot days as a child on holiday in Cornwall - even more so with the weather today

That was the playout track at the end of my mother's funeral service about a year ago (still doesn't seem like it) It was a favourite of hers.

A nice idea for a thread Helen.
A song that always makes me feel good is Rainbow Valley by The Love Affair, played of course, like so many mentioned here, on today's POTP from 1968. Its a great song with nice lyrics, good guitar and percussion (probably played by session men and not by the band). The song sort of sums up 1968. What a fabulous chart it was. |

I haven't heard much radio today but for me, the most noted track was "As Long As He Needs Me" by Shirley Bassey on Brians's show this morning...
This is one of those golden songs which reminds me of laying on the carpet pushing my toy cars around at 8 years old when everything in the world was right. Even the shipping forecast was good...
I don't hear Shirley without thinking of my mum too.. she was a great fan of hers and I remember how she seemed a just little shocked at the way she was treated on that Morcambe & Wise show

Yes, being in a band at school back then, I clearly remember walking to school and talking about the revelation that Everlasting Love by "Love Affair" was actually played by session musicians! I found it quite shocking... and we were a little smug about it too as we included it in our own "set"

Mine for today has been Joanna by Scott Walker. I don't think I really cared much for it when it was released, a bit too slow perhaps, but I just adore it now.
My guilty pleasure which I know will get you all groaning with despair  was Hallelujah which Graham Norton played this morning. I just wanted to sing along............... not suprised it won Eurovision that year!

I have very mixed feelings about that song - it's a good track but it reminds me of a former girlfriend who back in 1991 dumped me the night before I was going to propose and I had a nightmare about it only for my dream to come true the following lunchtime -

That was common practice for so many acts in the late 60s and early 70s chart acts though. You can tell by the huge production that went into the song that there were lots of session musicians - big orchestra, singers, etc - which would all have been laid down before the main vocal. |

For me track of the day on Radio 2 has to be 'Buck Rogers' by that great Welsh band Feeder played on the JV Show as part of his Welsh orientated programme today
I never felt that Feeder ever got the recognition they deserved - they got rather drowned out in the Oasis, Blur, Pulp Britpop culture of the mid to late 90's
One of the greatest rock tracks of the last twenty years in my view

Over on Radio Caroline, Pete Anthony has just played a track called "Analogue Man", from Joe Walsh's new album, which is just fabulous. I guarantee you won't hear that on daytime R2 unless Johnnie Walker plays it. It was preceded by the full-length version of Joe's eqrly 1970s hit "Life's Been Good To Me". That's my Track of The Day! Who needs bland old R2 on Saturday mornings?

They were only played because Joe was doing the PR round and was "interviewed" (I use the term loosely when applied to Wright) on the show. The tracks were played simply because they came with the package. There's no way Wright would ever bother otherwise.

Yeah but you were referring to his new album Colin, and unless it was originally recorded in the 70s Johnnie won't play it.
He got away with a Bruce Springsteen one last year as it was recorded in the 70s but never released.

Actually Joe Walsh was on Steve Wright the other afternoon and Steve played 2 tracks can't remember which they were but they were from the new album.
Johnnie won't play it as it's not 70s.
The new album is what I was referring by 'it' in the last sentence, not Life's Been Good To Me.....................

Getting back to the thrust of this thread for me really only one candidate for today's track
'Time for Living' by The Association played on SOTS this morning - one of the most underrated groups of that era - reminds me of some great days in the late 60's
And 'Never My Love' and 'Windy' to me rank not far behind

(OK, you win. However, I was forgetting that JW's show was 70s orientated. I often forget to listen to his show at 3.00pm because the rest of Sunday R2 is so bad that I just don't listen any more). |

All very well, but it wasn't at the forefront of my mind when pulling up Johnnie's name when posting. As I said, I barely to listen on Sunday at all - and that includes Johnnie's restrictive (in my opinion) format. |
